Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game-Chapter 616 - 339 Fulfilled Curse
The atmosphere at the dining table was quite strange. Joshua Hughes neither spoke nor ate, just sipped the red wine in his glass nonchalantly.
The striking features of his face under the light projected an imposing presence, an unspoken noble lineage radiated from him, making the already lavishly decorated dining room feel somewhat oppressive.
Perhaps such a room couldn’t contain the powerful aura of this man.
As the host, Arthur Yates usually maintained a serious and earnest demeanor, yet in front of this man, he could only be submissive. Brian Yates was full of suppressed anger, while Harper Johnson smiled like a chrysanthemum blooming in the autumn; everyone harbored their own motives.
Evelyn Yates cautiously watched the tall man beside her. When he didn’t speak, she couldn’t guess his thoughts, and even if he did say something, she couldn’t really grasp what it meant.
Avery Jane walked in slowly carrying a small white-blue porcelain bowl with round tangyuan inside, steaming with a faint scent of osmanthus. She placed the bowl in front of Evelyn Yates. Joshua Hughes glanced at her badly swollen hand and a trace of displeasure flashed through his deep eyes. This woman was truly stubborn; even in this state, she refused to bow down to him.
"Joshua, try it. My sister-in-law’s cooking is quite good. The braised fish she makes is truly exceptional." Evelyn pretended to praise Avery. Making this wouldn’t hurt her hands, just a little pain; if she actually had to prepare a fish, her beautiful hands could be ruined by raw water and fishy smell, likely leading to inflammation. Her beautiful little face looked up at the man beside her with a shy smile. Yet, in that beautiful smile, Avery felt a chill that was unavoidable.
He usually didn’t eat desserts, but looking at the little tangyuan in the bowl, inexplicably, they seemed quite appetizing.
The snowy white and perfect outer skin was soft and slightly elastic, the filling inside was fragrant, giving a warm feeling, incomparable to the other exquisite dishes on the table.
"Mr. Hughes is satisfied, so let Little Avery often go to the Hughes Family to make it for you all, since Evelyn loves it too." Harper Johnson smiled obsequiously, having finally felt a taste of being the lady of the Hughes Family over the years.
"Stepmother, I’m afraid that’s not possible, I’ve already found a job." Avery Jane had no desire to be further entangled with that nauseating man, and she had to start working immediately; otherwise, Wenyard Laboratory would be in jeopardy.
She had long prepared herself to put a perfect mark on Wenyard’s hard work; under no circumstances would she allow the research to stop due to lack of funds.
Avery Jane’s casual remark caused a stir at the entire dining table.
"Sister-in-law, even if the allowance at home can’t compare with others’, it should be enough for your expenses, right? If you go out to work, isn’t that letting people laugh at us, the Yates Family, for not treating you well?" Evelyn said, with a smile full of smugness, looking down at Avery’s plain clothes as she mentioned it couldn’t compare to others’.
She enjoyed the feeling of having Avery in her grasp. Her deceased brother used to say Avery was the most perfect woman, and now she wanted to see this so-called perfect woman fall to pieces.
"Exactly, exactly, Avery, you really don’t understand. How could a Yates Family daughter-in-law go out to work? Those who know will think you can’t stand the loneliness and want to meet more friends, while those who don’t might assume we, the Yates Family, force you to earn money. Even though our Yates Family is far from the Hughes Family, we aren’t in need of your meager earnings. I don’t agree with you going to work." Harper, assuming the air of a matriarch, made Avery feel this was a farce, and the most ridiculous part was her being trapped in the middle.
"Or else, Evelyn, if you like your sister-in-law’s dessert, why don’t you invite Avery Jane to the Hughes Family to make desserts for you? That way, I’ll be at ease. Avery is meticulous, and you, as a pampered lady, I really worry that you cannot handle it well. Just take good care of Joshua, and once there are children, Avery can help you with them." Harper kept calling Joshua, already regarding him as her son-in-law.
