Chapter 39: Return

The journey back to Goldtree was a long one.

Not only did they have no horses to travel with, but they were also completely worn out and tired. Several times one of their knights collapsed from either thirst, hunger, or fatigue, and they all had to stop to make sure they didn’t die.

This turned what could have been half a day’s journey, into one that stretched over multiple days.

Levian didn’t see this entirely as a negative. After all, it allowed him to get to know the squadron better.

Sun, the blonde short mage, was a 20-year-old man who had grown up in Goldtree his whole life. He had shown great potential in the academy, and followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the Elven Army.

Valessa was a 19-year-old female knight with short brown hair and a cute face, now that she had washed off the dirt in river water. She was originally from a different city named Evergreen, and after the death of her parents, she travelled to Goldtree in hopes of becoming a recognised knight.

There were others in the squadron that stood out two; however, those two were the closest in age and seemed to get along best with Levian.

---

Eventually, Goldtree came into sight. The eyes of the squadron lit up and they pushed themselves harder to get home.

Levian used the time to take back all of their Legendary weapons, promising that if they were ever to team up again, he would give them back. However, he secretly allowed Sun and Valessa to keep theirs, which they thanked him greatly for.

Then finally, they arrived home.

———

"Hey, look. Isn’t that Commander Inari’s squadron? The one that was stationed at Dragon’s Mouth."

"How did they manage to get back... wait a minute, that man in the black armour. That’s—"

"The True Elf!"

As Levian and his squadron entered the first floor of Goldtree, he swiftly found out just how much his name had spread.

Sun and Valessa both turned to him, eyes wide and stuck in a state of disbelief.

"No way... no fucking way," Sun said. Valessa simply stared at him with her jaw dropped.

"You are the true elf. Why didn’t you say something earlier? Shit, now it makes sense why you’re so powerful for a mid-gold."

The rest of the squadron were now all staring at him, and bombarding him with questions.

Luckily, Levian was saved by a figure approaching. A figure that he recognised.

It was an elf, deviating from a squadron of his own who seemed to have also just arrived at Goldtree.

One glance was all it took for Levian to realise who it was.

Short shaved hair. A scar claiming of his right eye. A missing finger on the right hand. He recognised these things as it was his own father who ordered them to be done to the man.

Yet still, he wore a smile on his face as they were reacquainted.

"Cassius!"

The young elf pulled Levian into a brotherly hug. He had made it home from his battle at The Ashen Crossing.

"Well, Master Levian," Cassius spoke in a playful tone. "It seems you’ve made quite the name for yourself in just a few days."

Levian heard mutters around Goldtree.

"He even knows Lord Cassius?"

"Idiot... Lord Cassius was the one who found him."

Levian was taken aback by the respect that Cassius was given here in his home. He had only ever known the man as a servant of war.

"The True Elf himself." A deeper, rough voice suddenly came from the distance.

Levian saw a giant elf with long white hair wearing thick green armour. He placed a fist to his chest to show his respect.

Sylvombre. The man who helped us across Ashen Crossing by fighting Onitsuka’s Drah.

Levian returned the gesture, placing a hand on his own chest.

Afterwards, the two squadrons came together and exchanged stories of war. Others also began to filter into Goldtree at the same time.

With news of the duel in 6 months, the war was temporarily put on hold. There was no reason for either side to waste lives on the battlefield when they had already come to an agreement on how to settle things.

Thus, the elves marked this day as the Final Day of Battle. Knights were returned to their families and friends, reunited.

Yet there was still much to do...

———

Levian reported directly to King Gaëlf after his return to Goldtree. Not only was the King pleased to see him, but he was also proud of the man’s accomplishments.

"Earning a squadron’s respect is no easy feat, true elf. Consider those men as your private army. You’ve earned it after all."

Levian was taken aback. Being gifted a squadron was a sign of great respect.

He bowed his head deeply to the king.

"Now, onto more important matters." Gaëlf started. "Your rank. Have you managed to reach high gold yet?"

Levian shook his head. He had seen many battles at Dragon’s Mouth; however, it took much longer for the system to progress when reaching the higher ranks.

He revealed his current stats to the King.

King Gaëlf nodded his head, impressed with what he was hearing.

"Your agility has increased most, probably due to a movement skill that you’ve been using. Correct?"

"Yes, Fade Between Realms. It’s a stealth skill too."

"Ah yes. That makes sense. Anyways, it is no bother that you have yet to reach high-gold. That can be achieved through hard sparring with a partner above your rank, which I can sort out for you. Afterwards, I can reveal to you the method to break through to low-platinum."

Levian was pleased with his plan. That meant that he could stay in Goldtree.

After giving his thanks to the King and leaving, the man stopped him with a few last words.

"Oh, and you might want to visit your wife Diana. She has been worrying about you."
