Chapter 41: The World Beyond Eldoria

Dawn broke slowly over the Blackwood Forest. Pale light filtered through the thick canopy, casting long shadows across the cave entrance where Kael kept the final watch.

His companions stirred behind him, stretching sore muscles and brushing dirt from their clothes. The night had been restless for everyone. Every sound from the forest had made them freeze, waiting for the thunder of approaching boots that never came.

"We need to talk about where we’re going," Lady Leya said, settling beside Kael at the cave mouth. Her noble dress was wrinkled and stained, but her eyes were clear and focused.

Madam Vex joined them, followed by the others. In the morning light, they all looked tired but determined. The shock of the previous night had worn off, replaced by the practical need to survive.

"The kingdom isn’t safe anymore," Velara said bluntly. "Too many people saw us at the auction. Too many connections to trace."

Kael nodded. He’d been thinking the same thing during his watch. "We need to leave Eldoria completely. But where can we go?"

Lady Leya was quiet for a moment, then spoke in a thoughtful voice. "I suppose it’s time you all learned about the world beyond our little kingdom."

She picked up a stick and began drawing lines in the dirt floor of the cave. The others gathered around her makeshift map.

"Most people in Eldoria only know about neighboring kingdoms," she began. "But the world is much bigger than that. Much more dangerous too."

She drew a large circle in the center of her dirt map. "This is where we are now. The continent of Drakmoor. It’s the human continent, stretching from ice lands in the north all the way down to burning deserts in the south."

Sara leaned forward, curious despite their situation. "How big is it?"

"Huge," Lady Leya said. "Our Kingdom of Eldoria is just one of hundreds. Maybe thousands. And Drakmoor itself is only one of five continents in the world of Virelia."

She drew four more circles around the first one. Each was roughly the same size.

"The whole world is about a thousand times bigger than most people can imagine," she continued. "Mana flows through it like rivers. The stronger you get, the more of it you can feel and use."

Kael studied the crude map. "What about the other continents?"

Lady Leya pointed to the circle at the top of her drawing. "That’s Celestia. The holy land of cultivation. Only the most powerful people in the world can survive there. The air itself is so thick with magic that weak cultivators would be crushed just by breathing it."

Her voice dropped to a whisper. "They say mountains float in the sky there, held up by pure spiritual energy. The Church of Sacredflame has their main temples on Celestia. So does the Sanguine Court."

Lady Morwen shuddered at the mention of the vampire organization. After learning about Cole, the name carried new weight for her.

"The other continents are controlled by different races," Lady Leya went on. She pointed to each circle as she spoke. "Aethermoor belongs to the elves. Cities that look like they’re made of crystal and moonlight. Trees that grow as tall as mountains."

"Ironhold is the dwarf continent. They’ve built entire cities underground, connected by tunnels that run for thousands of miles. Their metalwork and stone carving is legendary."

Her finger moved to the last circle. "And Shadowlands... that’s where the truly dangerous creatures live. Vampires, werewolves, demons. It’s always dark there, like the sun refuses to shine on it."

Lila looked nervous. "Are there really demons?"

"Oh yes," Lady Leya said grimly. "And worse things too. But they mostly stay on their own continent. The few times they’ve tried to invade other lands..." She shook her head. "Entire kingdoms have been wiped out."

Kael absorbed this information. The world was far more complex than he’d realized. "What about other races? Besides the main ones on each continent?"

Lady Leya smiled slightly. It was the first genuine smile she’d shown since the auction. "Now that’s where it gets interesting. See, the continents might be dominated by one race, but smaller groups live everywhere."

She began drawing smaller marks around her map. "Giant clans live in the highest mountains on every continent. They keep to themselves mostly, but when they do get involved in wars..." She whistled softly. "A single giant warrior can tear through an army."

"Centaur tribes control the big grasslands in the middle of Drakmoor. They’re incredible horsemen. Well, horse-people. You know what I mean."

Sara giggled despite their serious situation. The mental image was amusing.

"Dragonborn are scattered around volcanic areas," Lady Leya continued. "They can breathe fire and their scales are tougher than most armor. Very proud people. They don’t like taking orders from anyone who can’t beat them in single combat."

"What about orcs?" Madam Vex asked. She’d dealt with many different races through her business connections.

"Orcs claim the badlands and places nobody else wants," Lady Leya said. "Harsh deserts, poisoned swamps, areas where the magic is too wild for most people to handle. They’re tougher than humans and breed faster. The only reason they haven’t overrun human lands is that they spend most of their time fighting each other."

She paused, thinking. "Oh, and fairy courts. Those are special. They don’t live in any fixed place. Their realms exist in pockets between the normal world and... somewhere else. You can only reach them through magical portals that appear and disappear without warning."

Velara looked skeptical. "How do you know all this?"

Lady Leya’s expression became sad. "My family has old books. Records from merchants and explorers who traveled beyond Eldoria. Most people don’t bother to read them, but I always loved stories about distant places."

She traced a finger along the edge of her dirt map. "The thing is, most races don’t like humans very much. They think we’re either too weak to matter or too dangerous to trust. Some see us as pests that breed too quickly and spread everywhere."

"That’s cheerful," Kael muttered.

"It’s the truth," Lady Leya said firmly. "The few times different races have worked together, they’ve created wonders. Flying cities, magic that can reshape entire landscapes, weapons that can kill gods."

Her voice darkened. "But more often, when races meet, they fight. And those fights can destroy everything for thousands of miles around."

The cave fell silent as everyone processed this information. The world was vast, dangerous, and filled with powers that made their local problems seem small by comparison.

"So where does that leave us?" Kael asked finally.

Lady Leya began erasing her dirt map with her palm. "It means we have options. Drakmoor is huge. We could disappear into one of the other human empires and start over. The Astralion Empire in the north, maybe. Or the Solarian Empire on the western coast."

"What about other continents?" Sara asked.

"Possible, but dangerous," Lady Leya admitted. "Humans aren’t welcome in most non-human lands. We’d need guides, protection, and a very good reason for being there."

Madam Vex nodded thoughtfully. "I have contacts in some of the other human kingdoms. People who owe me favors or might be willing to help for the right price."

"The Church’s influence is strongest here in Eldoria and the neighboring kingdoms," Velara added. "If we can get far enough away, they might not bother pursuing us."

Kael stood up and walked to the cave entrance. Morning was fully upon them now, and somewhere in the distance, he could hear the baying of hunting dogs.

"Decision time," he said grimly. "Those are tracking hounds. They’ll have our scent soon."

The group quickly gathered their few belongings. Lady Leya’s lesson about the wider world had given them hope, but it had also reminded them how small and vulnerable they were.
