April 10, 1893

The presidential residence was calm that evening, a rare reprieve from the constant meetings, briefings, and decisions that consumed Matthew Hesh’s time. For once, the noise of politics was distant. In their private quarters, Matthew found peace with his wife and newborn son, Maverick.

Amber sat in a cushioned rocking chair near the large window, cradling Maverick gently in her arms. The baby stirred, letting out soft coos as Amber whispered soothing words to him. The warm glow of the evening sun bathed the room in amber light, making the moment feel timeless.

Matthew stood near the bed, silently watching the scene before him. He admired Amber’s tender care, her motherly instincts shining through with every gentle touch. Her hair, tied loosely, framed her face, and her eyes sparkled with warmth as she gazed down at their child.

"You’re amazing," Matthew said softly, breaking the silence.

Amber looked up and smiled. "It’s not exactly a difficult job when he’s this calm. Give it a couple of years when he starts running around and causing trouble," she teased.

Matthew chuckled and approached, kneeling beside the chair. "I’ll be right there with you when that time comes. We’ll handle it together."

Amber leaned forward slightly, allowing Matthew to place a gentle kiss on Maverick’s forehead. The baby stirred again, his tiny hands reaching out instinctively. Matthew took one of Maverick’s hands in his own, marveling at how small and delicate it was.

"He’s perfect," Matthew whispered.

Amber nodded. "He is. And he already has your determination. You should’ve seen how hard he cried when the nurses first wrapped him up. He wasn’t happy until they gave him space to move around."

Matthew smirked. "Sounds like a Hesh, alright. We don’t do well being constrained."

Amber laughed softly, shifting Maverick slightly as he began to fall asleep. "You’ve had a long day," she said, glancing at him. "You should rest."

Matthew shook his head. "I’ve waited all day for this. Everything else can wait."

They sat together in silence for a while, enjoying the simple, peaceful moment. It was a rare treasure in a life filled with responsibilities and expectations.

A gentle knock at the door interrupted the stillness. Matthew stood and crossed the room, opening the door to reveal Charles Greyson, Amber’s father. The older man had traveled from their hometown to visit, and while he carried himself with dignity, there was still a look of awe on his face as he stepped inside.

"Mr. President," Charles greeted with a grin, extending a hand.

"Charles," Matthew said, shaking his hand firmly. "You know you don’t have to call me that in private."

"Old habits die hard," Charles chuckled. "Besides, it’s still a bit surreal. I keep thinking back to when you were just a commoner working from a train station. And now... here you are. President of Amerathia."

Matthew smiled, stepping aside to allow Charles further in. "It’s been a long journey. I wouldn’t be here without you. You gave me opportunities when others wouldn’t even look my way."

Charles waved his hand dismissively. "Nonsense. You earned everything you’ve achieved. I just gave you a nudge."

Amber stood and approached her father, cradling Maverick in her arms. "Hello, Papa," she said warmly, leaning in to kiss his cheek.

"Amber," Charles said with a smile, his eyes softening as he looked at his daughter and grandson. "And this little one... I can’t believe I’m a grandfather."

Amber gently held Maverick out so Charles could see him better. "Meet your grandson, Maverick Hesh."

Charles took a deep breath, blinking away the emotion that welled in his eyes. He reached out and carefully touched Maverick’s tiny hand.

"Hello, Maverick," he whispered. "You’ve got quite the legacy ahead of you, young man."

Matthew watched the interaction with a sense of deep gratitude. Family had always been important to him, and seeing Charles bond with Maverick filled him with a renewed sense of purpose.

"How have things been back home?" Matthew asked as they all took seats in the spacious living area.

"Busy, as always," Charles replied. "Your factories are running at full capacity. It’s amazing to see how much the town has changed because of you. People have jobs, their children are going to school, and there’s a sense of pride in the air. You’ve given them hope."

"That’s good to hear," Matthew said. "But there’s still so much more to do. This presidency... it’s overwhelming sometimes. The expectations are enormous."

Charles nodded thoughtfully. "Leadership always is. But you’ve already proven that you can handle it. Just remember to take care of yourself and your family. They’re what keep you grounded."

Amber smiled at her father’s words. "He’s right. You don’t have to carry everything on your shoulders, Matthew. You have people who can help."

"I know," Matthew replied quietly. "And I’m grateful for all of you. I wouldn’t be here without you and Amber."

Charles chuckled. "You’ve come a long way from that ambitious young man who dreamed of changing the world. But one thing hasn’t changed—you still believe in a better future. That’s why people follow you. Never lose sight of that."

They continued talking for a while longer, sharing stories of the past and discussing plans for the future. As the evening deepened, Charles stood to leave, giving both Amber and Matthew one last hug.

"Take care of each other," Charles said as he headed for the door. "And keep making us proud."

"We will," Matthew promised.

After Charles left, Matthew and Amber returned to the nursery, where Maverick lay peacefully asleep in his crib. Matthew leaned against the doorframe, watching Amber adjust the blankets around their son.

"He’s got a big name to live up to," Amber murmured softly, brushing a hand over Maverick’s hair.

"He’s going to do great things," Matthew said. "Just like his mother."

Amber smiled at him. "And his father."

Together, they stood in the quiet room, watching over their child. For all the challenges ahead, this moment belonged to them—a reminder of the strength they drew from each other and the future they were building together.

No matter how many battles lay ahead, Matthew knew that with his family by his side, he could face anything.
