Chapter 38 - Randel Montego

Captain Lewis kept looking around. The spirit energy got more and more concentrated until finally, they could all feel the specific spot that the energy had come from.

"Captain, this seems weird. We have met some low-level monsters on our way here, but not one of higher strength. It's like they are avoiding this place," one of the knights voiced out.

"I understand your point, but we can't go back now. This must be the place—we have to find where that treasure is," Lewis said, still scanning the ground with his eyes to find the treasure.

"Sadly, there is no treasure. I've checked already."

A voice spoke out of nowhere. Immediately, Lewis and all the men pulled their swords out, looking around for who spoke.

"No need to be so jumpy," the voice spoke again, and a man walked out from behind a tree. He was a young man, no more than twenty. His eyes were crimson red, and his hair was pure white.

His skin was pale to an unnatural level. He wore a fitting, ankle-length white jacket with gold embroidery and white gloves covering his hands. He was a tall man, standing at over six feet.

He had a small golden chain around his neck, and attached to the chain mail was a golden circle with a triangle in it.

Immediately, Lewis saw that sign and pointed his sword at the man. "You are from the Spirit Cult, you vile creature. What are you doing here?" Lewis asked.

"Ohh? It seems that I have become popular everywhere. My name—or what I go by—is Randel Montego," the man said, introducing himself with a slight bow.

"I don't care who you are. Spirit cultists are not allowed anywhere in Aragon and Ravenhold," Lewis said.

"But I am in the forest—the Great Forest, to be precise. I am not in Aragon, which means I have every right to be here, as much as you do," Randel said with a twisted smile. Everything he did sent chills down the spines of the militia and the knights.

"That being said, it's not like if I wanted to do something to your little Ravenhold, I couldn't. My path has just not been directed there yet," Randel said with a smile. His tone sounded like a threat.

"Are you implying that you will come to Ravenhold? If that's so, then I must stop you before you spread your corrupted and twisted lies to the people of Ravenhold," Lewis said.

"Stop me? Oh, sorry, I haven't given you full information yet. I am here because I was led by my path to find the source of the massive spirit energy I felt.

Now that I came here and didn't see anything, I am supposed to leave like I was never here. And that means I can't allow you to walk away from here," Randel said.

"You want to kill us? I'd like to see you try. Surround this cultist! We shall burn him at the town square for his worship of the ancient evil spirits that plagued our world," Lewis said, and all the men moved to encircle Randel.

Aric led the spirits deeper into the forest. He subconsciously went through the same route he used to get his true name.

When he got closer to the exact spot where he had gotten his name, he heard voices, and it seemed like there was a tense discussion happening.

"Stop walking," Aric whispered, and the spirits stopped behind him.

"Some people are up there, and it seems they are having some sort of discussion. They might be here for the girl and her party. Let's get close and watch, but stay hidden," Aric said. They all understood the urgency of the situation, so they nodded and complied.

Aric got as close as he could, and then he could finally see what was happening there. He saw the militia and the knights circling around a young man.

He didn't know why, but that young man gave him a serious feeling of unease. He tried his best to ignore it and focus on what was happening.

"Surrender now, spirit cultist, and your pain will not be much," Lewis said to Randel.

"Hahaha, enough of all this talk. If you want me, then take me," Randel said with a grin.

After he said that, two men charged in at the same time.

The first one swung his blade in a diagonal up-to-down slash, but Randel stepped out of the way easily and sent a powerful kick—one that looked effortless—right into the man's gut, sending him flying.

Randel quickly took a step back and dodged the slash of the second man. Then, he raised his leg as high as possible and landed an axe kick, slamming the man's head into the ground.

"If this is the best you have to offer, sadly, you stand no chance. But who am I to stop you? You can come, but now I'll get serious," Randel said and slowly removed his gloves, placing them in his pocket.

He pointed at Lewis and spoke, "Now you can come and be forgotten."

Lewis was already enraged by the fact that this person had used his men as toys. He gritted his teeth, clutched his sword tightly, and took a step forward.

"Now, all at once, let's take him down," Lewis said.

"Yes, yes, exactly what I need," Randel said in ecstasy. He spread his fingers and arms wide like he was waiting for them to come to him.

They all charged in on Randel at the same time, wanting to end him, but as they got close to him, time seemed to slow down around them—except for Randel.

He moved at an amazing speed. He dodged the first sword and placed his hand on the shoulder of the attacker. He dodged another and placed his hand on the shoulder of another.

The two people he touched went stiff like corpses and fell to the ground. Randel used the opening he created and got out of the middle.

He gained some distance and looked at them with a smile on his face. The men stopped to check on their two fallen comrades. Lewis looked at them—their bodies had turned cold and hard.

He looked up at Randel and cursed. "You bloody bastard! What did you do to them?"

"Nothing much. I simply erased their existence. And in five seconds, you will all forget those two ever existed."

Randel said, "Five, four, three, two, one."
