Chapter 73: Just A Sneak Peek

*HUFF!

*HUFF!

"Ssshhsss, shush it."

’No, no...’

"Tell me little dove, what are you doing in my mansion so early in the morning?"

"TELL ME! GRR!"

"Nooo!!"

Her eyes shot open with a start, the hard bed underneath her drenched from sweating buckets.

"No... no...no." Breathing heavily, reality began to set in bit by bit. She still wore the black and white uniform of the maids of the mansion. Her navy blue hair was messy, as never had she even intended to sleep, yet she did.

’It’s night time?! How long did I sleep.’ The room was dark, the moonlight casting through the nearby window barely helping with her vision.

"Where’s everyone?" Her eyes darted around, scanning each of the other right beds in the room. ’What’s that noise?’ Her ears twitched, as her senses were sharp despite not being a spiritualist.

It was coming from a far distance, however, she could tell what it was from the sounds — music.

Deciding to not be a sitting duck as she had stuff to do, age made her way to the door. Closing it shut behind her, only to come to a stop the moment she stepped out.

"Here’s quiet, and at night." It was difficult to believe, so heading to the next room after hers. She opened the door and stepped in, the beds quite visible and with no one on it. Checking the next and the next one after, the entire floor had only her there.

"Faix, Mai, Yulen, anyone... everyone!" She called out loudly, getting nothing but an echo of her voice in return.

"Well..." She heaved a sigh, a hand unbuttoned the top of her dress. As with three buttons undone, her hands went underneath the uniform and wrappers. It was now on the left side of her chest, slowly taking the object from the area. She flinched at it was a sensitive part of her, sighing as she brought it out.

"Phew, I should work on changing its location when I’m not using it for a long while." Wearing the storage ring, she first skimmed through it with a smile propping up her face.

"Good." She remarked, an object appearing in her hands— a spyglass, one of the many stuff she’d stocked up. For her, knowing the time was of importance. So checking the moon with it, she smiled briefly. "It’s a gibbous moon, late evening. There’s enough time for the delivery— Thelma better have my money ready by this week’s end."

*CHATTER!

*CHATTER!

The enclave was full of activity, the candlelight brightening up the camp and its surroundings. A large bonfire had been set at the center of the enclave, as on it were the bodies burned alongside their caskets. For they believed their souls went into the heavens via the air and smoke.

Around it were many people, some dancing around cheerfully while others drunk away their souls on series of tankards. They were in a state of mourning though full of merriness. This was tradition, for the breaking down into tears and wailing wasn’t the style of knights nor men. Thus, boozing and chomping down meat in excess were their expression of mourning.

"Haha!! Get around! Get around! All must enjoy this wild meat!" A figure in a black tunic exclaimed, his face was all puffy from the beer in the he held and slurped from.

"For Tav!"

"FOR TAV!!" The other men called out, their tankards clashing together as they did. Serving the beer and meat around were the maids in their gowns, some going about other certain activities of pleasure. The night guards always turned the area into a busy tavern each night, with few actually taking up their posts.

The nobles didn’t bother with them, after all once one did their parts no matter how they did it— that was all that mattered. And so, this event was just another usual event each night, although it leaned more toward a legal side than an illegal one.

"Finally no sneaking out for them, damned maids." Meanwhile, a distance away on high ground near the path leading to the maid’s quarters, her navy blue hair darker under the night sky— Kezia could be seen.

’Where’s he... where’s Colin?! I’m slaughtering any dum dum mingling with him for sure.’ She threatened, looking through the device as she scanned the area.

"Huh?" Scanning through the crowd again, her left brow raised. ’Where are the others?’

"Wait a minute... what’s even going on here in the first place." The realization whacked her hard on the head with a mace.

*SCRRRAACTH!

Walking through the gardens behind the mansion and between it and the enclave were three figures. All of them wore tunics, white with golden waistbands indicating their inclusion among NobleHouse Elmore.

Dragging an object behind him was the one at the center of the trio, moving it with ease though his face said otherwise.

"Need a hand, Colin?"

"Oh Dan, you’re now tagging up with Ral in thinking that I’m weak right?" Colin retorted, now walking faster than the two despite carrying the same weight. After all, he’d bear the pain of dragging such a ton of weight alone anyway.

"Slayers are keepers right." Ral shrugged.

"Finders you mean." Dan corrected the other snickering at his words.

"Sure sure, if they weren’t only good at that of course, Hah— finders. Runners would fit better." He teased, walking ahead with Dan stopping in his tracks with his mouth gaping. Once again, that button had been pressed.

"How were you expecting me to kill it after suddenly appearing?"

"At least not by running, though you did the right thing coming to the pros." He smirked like a sly fox.

"Pros? You can’t be adding yourself right?"

"Why not, I did all the planning to take it down— deserve the credit here."

"Ugh! It was a state of shock." Dan continued to protest, not ready to give in anytime soon.

"Mhm, and mine was a trance state right, haha."

"You—"

*THUD!

The sound drew their attention in its direction, only to notice the figure now on the ground and panting heavily.

"Haa, haa— can you...guys...hold it...for a second?"

The two turned to look at each other and back, a smile creeping up their faces. "Finally."

’The mansion sure is quieter than usual tonight, barely any guards. The entrance sure is the worst post for any unit.’

About descending the staircase, she stopped in her tracks noticing how dark it was down there. So grabbing one of the torches beside her from the wall, Kezia made her way down.

*CRACKLE!

The torches leading to the kitchen were now ablaze, now being a step away from entering the kitchen.

*CLANG!

"Eh?" Without a second thought she rushed into the room only to hear the squeaking of a few rats. Doing nothing but running away seeing someone enter, although that was the least of her concerns.

"Heavens! Who could have done this— just who?"
