Campus Ace Girl-Chapter 637 - 638 - Afraid of Death, Yet Speaking So Elegantly
Bo Qing instinctively said, "That wasn’t my intention."
Madam Bo sneered, "Whether you intended it or not, the Bo Family is now roasting on the fire because of you."
Bo Qing lowered his eyes. "I just want what I deserve."
Madam Bo scoffed again. "You might as well ask the Old Patriarch. If he agrees, Nianyao will immediately relinquish his position to you. Oh, and by the way, you’ll first have to compete with the old man in charge. After all, Nianyao is the one who’s like your ’big brother’ now, isn’t he?"
Under the moonlight, Bo Qing, pale, eventually left.
Bo Nianyao and Bo Xichen didn’t stop him, because they knew they couldn’t. Once Bo Qing was far away, Bo Nianyao sighed.
Lin Yun was still fuming. "Bo Nianyao, don’t think I’m heartless. It’s all because you’ve been indulging him!"
"You’re right, dear. It’s my fault," Bo Nianyao said humbly.
Only then did Lin Yun relent. She turned to her son. "Xichen, what are your plans?"
Bo Xichen spoke in a deep voice, "I heard that Dark has started to counterattack. We had Jing, which Dark has always wanted, but recently..."
His voice grew heavy. "I forgot to mention, they have a substitute for Jing, an incredibly potent and domineering weapon. However, they haven’t mass-produced it yet, nor have they found a suitable location for it."
Bo Nianyao was shocked. "Is that true? What was Min Xindou’s reaction? Is this his doing?"
Bo Xichen shook his head. "No. Min Xindou only created Dark to counterbalance Beicheng and threaten King Jingyao. He’s in a position where he wouldn’t dare bring Beicheng down with him. Dark is now a dog he can’t control; in fact, to a large extent, Min Xindou is now at Dark’s mercy."
Bo Nianyao pondered silently for a moment. "You need to discuss this with Mr. Wang. Also, we need to put some pressure on Min Xindou."
He paused. "That young one, Zhou Yu, is certainly thoughtful and always one step ahead. With Zhou Yu now in Mr. Wang’s hands, Min Xindou wouldn’t dare act rashly."
Bo Xichen nodded. "I agree."
He suddenly added, "Also, there’s one more thing. Dark might support external warfare, thereby aiming to destabilize the situation in Beicheng. So, the weapons Dark is trying to create are of utmost importance."
Bo Nianyao patted his son’s shoulder. "Xichen, I’m old. The Bo Family and all these matters will have to rely on you to manage. Our Bo family has, for generations, taken the well-being of the world as its responsibility..." (Father Bo rambled on for about ten minutes.)
Madam Bo rolled her eyes at the side. "You old rascal! Scared of dying, yet you make it sound so noble!"
Bo Nianyao looked at his wife. "I have to admit I’m getting old. Weren’t you the one saying so?"
Madam Bo teased him, "Old? Bo Qing is only in his forties! And you’re his nephew by generation. Compared to him, you’re still a spring chicken!"
Bo Nianyao covered his face again. "My dear, please stop. This is so embarrassing."
As they bantered affectionately, Bo Xichen smiled faintly. The three of them then entered Si Garden.
He returned to the Orchid Room alone. Gu Anxi was still sound asleep. He didn’t lie down immediately but sat quietly beside her, watching her small face, feeling a wave of emotion.
People only thought Anxi was very happy with him, but they didn’t realize he was the kind of person who might have to leave at any moment, traveling all over the world. In those times, the family would have to depend on Anxi for everything, both inside and out. His parents were aging, and his father, in particular, was soft-hearted.
He reached out and touched her small, warm face, and his heart softened a bit.
Gu Anxi stirred awake, murmured, "Little Uncle," then snuggled closer, holding one of his hands before drifting back to sleep.
He smiled faintly and said nothing.
The next day, Bo Xichen made a trip to King Jingyao’s office. Wang Jingchuan hurried out to greet him from afar. Upon seeing Bo Xichen’s serious expression, Wang Jingchuan tactfully excused himself and closed the door.
King Jingyao had been unsettled these past few days; he was worried sick about the little rascal but was too proud to show it. So, Bo Xichen’s arrival was opportune. He immediately asked about Gu Anxi’s condition.
Bo Xichen briefly explained. King Jingyao chuckled. "See? I told you she’d be fine."
It was a shame, though, that Fengxi, the AI that had practically become sentient, was gone. How much emotional investment must it have taken for it to reach that state?
King Jingyao personally brewed a cup of tea for Bo Xichen, and they sat down together. After a moment, Bo Xichen suddenly asked, "Do you know what’s going on in South Africa?"
King Jingyao’s expression tensed. "I do. Unidentified high-casualty weapons have appeared there, and all indications point to them being exported from our side."
Bo Xichen added in a low voice, "They likely intend to use South Africa as a way to interfere with the situation in Beicheng."
King Jingyao’s fingers gently caressed his teacup, his clear gaze fixed on Bo Xichen. "What are your thoughts?"
Bo Xichen paused for a moment. "I want to go to South Africa."
At these words, King Jingyao appeared somewhat troubled.
Bo Xichen said quietly, "This trip is essential. Only by obtaining samples can we design an interception system."
King Jingyao still remained silent, seeming unable to make a decision.
Bo Xichen just looked at him.
After a moment, King Jingyao spoke softly, "Xichen, be careful."
He added, "Don’t worry about the Bo Family here. I will do everything in my power to protect them for you."
Bo Xichen nodded. "I know."
King Jingyao then went and got two exquisite stemmed wine glasses, poured a small amount of wine into each, and sat down. "Originally, I had hoped you would take this position, but I know your ambitions don’t lie here. And indeed, this seat is a hot potato. Look at Min Xindou and me—which of us has led a truly content and happy life? Endless official duties, countless tasks, and our subordinates are constantly complaining. It’s true that one doesn’t know the difficulties of running a household until one is in charge."
Bo Xichen laughed. "That’s only because you, Mr. Wang, are selfless and think of the greater good."
King Jingyao also smiled. "Please, don’t flatter me. I can’t accept such high praise. I know myself well. I’m just like Min Xindou, merely greedy for power. However, I happen to be a little smarter and have a bit more of a conscience than he does."
He sighed lightly. "If someone could take over this position now, I wouldn’t mind relinquishing all this power. Xichen, as long as Min Xindou is around, I cannot step down. As long as Dark exists, I cannot even think of retiring."
Bo Xichen deeply felt this. Bo Qing had already walked into a dead end, and there was no persuading him to turn back.
King Jingyao added, "Go back and tell your father not to feel pressured about Bo Qing’s status. It’s Bo Qing’s own choice and has nothing to do with the Bo Family. As for that little rascal... if she stubbornly denies everything, then so be it. She can be easily cleared. The day Dark falls, she can take the main credit and completely sever ties with Dark."
Bo Xichen had always known King Jingyao was shrewd and shameless, and now he was truly getting a taste of it.
He merely smiled faintly.
King Jingyao had said about all he intended to. Finally, he patted Bo Xichen’s shoulder. "I’ll wait for your return and celebrate your success."
To him, Bo Xichen and Gu Anxi were much more than just a younger sister figure and her husband; they were his trusted aides. With Zhou Yunchen also on his side, he felt a much greater sense of security. If it weren’t for their support, battling Min Xindou alone while Min Xindou was determined to go down the wrong path, he feared that even if he were to fight to his last breath, he might not be able to protect Beicheng.
After Bo Xichen left, King Jingyao sat alone in silence, slowly smoking a cigarette.
Wang Jingchuan approached and said softly, "Young Master Bo has left."
King Jingyao’s eyes were sharp. "This is a critical moment! Jingchuan, have Anxi come by later. I have something to discuss with her."
Wang Jingchuan nodded. "Understood."
King Jingyao continued, "Right now, we’re pinning our hopes on Xichen successfully bringing back samples from South Africa so we can develop an interception program."
He added, "And remember, the personnel at the Security Center must be protected. We absolutely cannot afford any carelessness."
Wang Jingchuan nodded again.
King Jingyao picked up the newspaper from the coffee table and said angrily, "Look at this! So many dead and injured. In the eyes of these people, human lives are worthless!"
Wang Jingchuan wanted to offer some more flattery, but King Jingyao glared at him. "Enough with the flattery. Have Anxi come over this afternoon. I need to discuss things further with her. Min Xindou is a key player; it all depends on whether he can keep his ’dog’ leashed."
