Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 43: Riot
He Juan blinked in surprise. "He’s not?"
"Mn." Mu Yuze pursed his lips tight. "On the night of the accident, Deng Shi is captured by the surveillance camera in a gambling house near District 15. There are also a lot of eyewitnesses. His alibi is solid."
Totally unlike me, He Juan thought wryly. Not only was he unable to prove that he had never stepped out of his house throughout the night, the CCTVs on the hallway had broken down as well. He Juan could not help but heave a helpless sigh.
They had painstakingly dug out Zhao Xinya’s life record up to twenty two years ago and found something worth chasing after. Yet in the end, the chain of clues broke off on Deng Shi just like that. No wonder Mu Yuze’s complexion did not look so good.
He Juan saw the increasingly dark shadows beneath his eyes and felt distressed. Unable to help it, he reached out to ruffle Mu Yuze’s soft hair, his voice became gentler as if coaxing an angry rabbit. "It’s okay. Don’t push yourself too hard. We will definitely be able to find Miss Zhao."
"...Mn." Mu Yuze quietly tilted his head and let his head be rubbed back and forth, his thick lashes quivering like dark butterfly wings. Rather than enduring He Juan’s sneaky behavior, that demeanor of his gave off an impression of asking more instead.
He Juan felt like he was going to die sooner or later from how adorable this person was. How could someone be so cute?! This was utterly illegal! He breathed out through his mouth whilst his fingers trailed down to pinch the omega’s reddish earlobes.
Mu Yuze raised his eyelids to glance at him. His black-blue eyes glowed with a soft, amorous light. However, before he could open his mouth to say anything, a series of furious honks resounded behind them. The traffic light had turned green from God-knows-when and a huge empty gap had already formed in front of them.
He Juan cleared his throat and retracted his itchy paw. "Pay attention... to the road."
This time, Mu Yuze held onto the steering wheel with both hands just like the textbook example of a law-abiding driver.
Putting aside how illegally adorable the man beside him was, He Juan could not help but wonder. Just where was Miss Zhao right now?
Judging from the amount of blood on the hallway, he did not hold the expectation that Miss Zhao was still alive. If he did not remember wrongly, Captain Li told him that they had reviewed the surveillance footage on the fourth floor and did not discover anyone going down. It meant that the perpetrator had either carried Miss Zhao away through the window or... Miss Zhao’s body was still somewhere in the apartment. Right, that’s the initial analysis.
But to make sure, He Juan still took out his notebook and flipped through it. Yesterday, he had taken the time to jot down each detail about the case he had heard for fear that he would forget something.
Amidst the rumble of car engine and soft breathing of two people, only the sound of He Juan flipping through pages could be heard.
He Juan tapped his fingers on his knees and put on an apologetic grimace as he told Mu Yuze, "I suddenly recalled that I have left something in my house. Can you drop me off there first?" He had a feeling that he had overlooked something important but... as for what it was, he needed to return there to know.
Mu Yuze shot him a skeptical glance. Well, that excuse was really lousy. If he was Mu Yuze, he would certainly not believe it too. He Juan restrained the urge to palm his forehead and hide from the omega’s intrusive gaze. Instead, he showed a gaze full of sincerity and expectation, hoping that Mu Yuze would buy his lie.
"Please," He Juan added. "Just five minutes. You can follow me in."
"... Fine," Mu Yuze finally relented with great reluctance. "This is the last time."
"Okay," He Juan showed a relieved smile. "Thank you so much, Xiao Ze." And I’m sorry, he added inwardly with guilt.
He Juan knew that him going back to the apartment would not be allowed for the time being. The fact that Mu Yuze was willing to bring him there could already be considered as a dereliction of duty. If this was discovered by his superior, it was not impossible for him to receive harsh punishment. He Juan was just exploiting Mu Yuze’s kindness, he realized it. But...
His instinct was clamoring for him to return. This was the first time that He Juan had ever felt such a strong urge from within himself, almost to the point of anxiety. He had a hunch that if he ignored it right now, he would not be able to get a good night’s sleep later on.
The car smoothly swiveled into the apartment complex and came to a stop outside the crowded parking lot.
He Juan was surprised to find that there were a lot of people arguing at the front gate. The old security guard tried to calm them down to no avail. Behind him, he was protecting an old woman whom He Juan had seen once before when he was signing the lease.
It was Grandma Li, the owner of this apartment building. In one glance, it was apparent that the old granny was already overwhelmed by the riot around her. Her hunched back was trembling and her face was as white as a sheet.
Beside him, Mu Yuze undid his seatbelt with a click and got down the car without a warning, his expression was as frosty as a blizzard at the height of winter.
"Xiao Ze!" Flustered, He Juan could only catch up to him.
He approached the crowd and the conversation gradually drifted into his ears.
"We don’t want to stay here anymore!"
"Yes, yes, such bad luck! I have signed the lease for two years but someone ended up dying above me! How can I sleep soundly from now on?!"
"How dare you charge us money after what happens here?!"
"Return our money or I will sue you!"
"I want to move out as soon as possible!"
They were akin to mad dogs seeing fresh meat, rushing forward with their claws and fangs brandished. The old security guard’s clothes were disheveled and his glasses were knocked askew. He kept trying to shout, "Don’t push! Don’t push! We will solve this in a civil way!"
"Get out of the way, old man!" All of a sudden, a robust middle aged man charged ahead and forcefully shoved him aside, causing the poor old security guard to lose his footing. Right by his side were flower beds made of solid brick. If he fell, then his head would slam right on it!
"Ahh—!!" Shrill, terrified screams echoed from the aunties.
However, before the tragedy could happen, a slender arm reached out from the side to catch the security guard in the nick of time, preventing the fall. Seeing that Mu Yuze was occupied with dealing with the stunned crowd, He Juan briskly walked forward and pulled Grandma Li aside.
"Are you okay, Madam?" He asked in a concerned tone.
Grandma Li’s frail body was shaking badly and as soon as she saw He Juan, she immediately grabbed hold of his arms. Her murky eyes were frantic and wild. "Y–You too?! Do you want to break the lease?! Do you want to get your money back too?!!"
He Juan was stunned by the sudden emotional outburst. Such a thought had never even crossed his mind. He hurriedly tried to comfort the granny, "It’s okay, I won’t. I won’t break the lease, so you should calm down first, Madam." His gentle and kind voice contained mysterious power that allowed Grandma Li to regain her senses. Chest heaving madly, she promptly went limp and staggered to the side.
He Juan caught her in time. Grandma Li was so thin. In such a close distance, he could see that the old woman’s body was soaked in cold sweat, even her teeth were chattering as if she had received a great fright. He Juan’s heart went to the poor woman who had to bear the ire of angry tenants.
He raised his head and his gaze collided with Mu Yuze’s in midair. The group of rowdy tenants were already frightened silly at the appearance of a legit police officer. Moreover, he was so scary and domineering. They did not even dare to breathe too loudly for fear that they would be thrown behind the bars to squat for the night.
He Juan mouthed, "I will go in first."
Mu Yuze nodded before his attention was soon drawn to something the group said. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
He Juan supported the old granny into the management office and pulled the chair for her to sit. He then grabbed the cup of water on the table and held it in front of the other. "Do you want to drink?" Grandma Li tried to accept the cup but her wrinkled hands were still shaking quite badly. Frowning, He Juan brought the cup to her mouth and carefully let her drink sip by sip. Only then did Grandma Li manage to calm herself down.
"T–Thank you..." she squinted her eyes to look at He Juan and finally managed to recognize him. "...Mr. He."
"It’s fine, Madam." He Juan showed a reassuring smile albeit he could not cover the concern in his tone. He observed the disheveled old woman in front of him and could not help asking, "Are you okay...?"
As if his question had turned on some kind of switch, Grandma Li buried her face into her palms and burst into tears.
