Chapter 45: Jealous?

Grandma Li fainted straight after she found out about the news and was brought away by an ambulance.

Once again, the apartment was crowded with criminal investigators, forensic officers, field officers and technicians. The tenants were temporarily detained inside their own houses and were not allowed to go out without the police’s supervision, preventing any additional chaos from breaking out. Even then, a huge uproar was already formed. It was expected that reporters would soon arrive at this place.

Goodness, the missing woman that the police had been searching these past two days was really dead! Not only that, her body was dumped on top of the elevator and already decomposed by the time she was found! How terrifying!

Captain Li Zhi’s frown was so deep that it would carve a creek out of his forehead. He stood amidst the busy lobby and barked out one command after another. "Gather all the DNA available on the scene! I don’t want to miss even one strand of hair or footprint! Where is the photographer? Come and record this place! Since when did this elevator start to malfunction? Where is the worker responsible for fixing it? Call them here! Now!!"

For a while, the lobby was in utter chaos. Camera light flashed intermittently, people shouting into their phones, messy footsteps striding back and forth. In addition to that, the smell of the rotten corpse was too repulsive. Half of the young officers who had never seen something so horrible like this already ran out to empty their stomach’s content.

And in the middle of the busy hubbub was He Juan who was sitting on a plastic chair, holding his forehead with a pale complexion.

As the person who had found the body, of course he was not allowed to leave. He Juan understood very well. He was just taking a brief respite to regain his bearings. Back then, as he pried the elevator door open, the light from the lobby had spilled into the small gap and illuminated the scene in front of him.

Even though it was just a glimpse, the gruesome scene had already been burned to the back of his eyelids. He Juan doubted he would ever forget it despite his bad memory.

He saw Miss Zhao Xinya’s body sprawled on top of the dirty and rusty cubicle with her limbs twisted in a strange angle. Even in death, she still had a tormented look on her face as though she could not gain liberation. And coincidentally, that little block of light had landed on her lifeless, bloody eyes. Staring straight at He Juan like a scene straight out of a horror movie.

A throbbing pain stabbed into his head and he pressed his lips thin, trying to contain the nausea that had been churning his stomach ever since.

In the next moment, a refreshing fragrance of lavender and peppermint wafted into his nose, greatly alleviating the discomfort all over his body.

He Juan cracked his eyes open in time to see Mu Yuze reaching his slender and beautiful hands out, knuckles bent, to tentatively press them beside He Juan’s aching temple. Mu Yuze’s fingers were cold and gave off a frosty aura just like the owner. In spite of that, the strength he exerted to give He Juan a massage was extremely gentle.

"How are you feeling?" The volume of his voice was low just enough for He Juan to hear, and for some reason, it gave off an indescribable sense of intimacy that scratched tenderly on He Juan’s heart. It was as if he was being prodded by a fierce rabbit who had carefully retracted its claws, afraid that he would be hurt.

He Juan could not help the smile forming on his lips. The sensation of Mu Yuze’s fingers on him plus the soothing pheromones he exuded made He Juan so comfortable that he wanted to snuggle closer to the omega and purr loudly from his throat.

It was really magical how Mu Yuze’s mere presence could bring him so much comfort, more than anything ever did.

Alas, He Juan was very conscious of the flow of people around them. Although each of them were busy with their respective tasks, it was still inappropriate for Mu Yuze to be seen acting so intimately with a former prime suspect. Thus, against all the urge to pull Mu Yuze closer and bury his face into Mu Yuze’s sweet smelling body, He Juan drew back to put some distance between them.

His eyes curved into crescents as he tilted his head to look at Mu Yuze. "Much better now. I’m sorry. It’s the first time I have seen something like that, so..." he ended his sentence with a huff of wry chuckle.

Mu Yuze slowly withdrew his hands and let them hang limply by his side. He looked like he wanted to say something but in the end, decided against it. "...Mn."

He Juan glanced at the stream of busy people around. "This time, we will be able to find the culprit, right?"

"Yes," Mu Yuze nodded. "Thanks to you."

He Juan rubbed his forehead helplessly. "I really didn’t do anything..." In the first place, the blame partially lay on him. He still could not get over the fact that he would have been able to prevent the disaster if he had not gotten wasted in the first place. This time, finding Miss Zhao’s body could be considered as his apology...

He Juan suddenly recalled something and let out a small gasp, "Oh God, Xieren!"

That’s right, Miss Zhao was Su Xieren’s girlfriend. Now that she had been found, shouldn’t they contact Su Xieren to inform him of the news? However, when he recalled Su Xieren’s despondent silhouette in the hospital earlier and imagined how he would react upon seeing Miss Zhao’s body, He Juan felt a heavy lump lodging on his throat.

"We have contacted him." Mu Yuze naturally knew what he was concerned about. "But his cell phone is out of service."

"Out of service...?" He Juan’s brows furrowed. He knew Su Xieren very well. Even during his holiday, he would not turn off his phone for fear that there would be an emergency patient who needed his help. The fact that Su Xieren’s phone could not be reached, coupled with the way he was struck hard by the news of Miss Zhao’s disappearance, got He Juan worried to death. He stood up abruptly and told Mu Yuze, "I think I should go back and check on him—"

"No."

He Juan did not expect Mu Yuze to refuse outright. He was stunned for a while.

"You have to give your statement first. After that, I will take you there. It’s still not too late to search for him by then." Mu Yuze informed him in a steady and straightforward manner. For some reason, seeing him like this affected He Juan’s and he unknowingly calmed down too.

"You’re right. I was too hasty." He Juan held his forehead in a self-deprecating manner. He showed Mu Yuze a grateful smile, wishing that he could hug the soul out of this man to let him know how precious he was to He Juan. "Thank you... Officer Mu. I really didn’t know what I would do without you."

Mu Yuze pursed his lips and turned away without responding, but He Juan caught sight of the tip of his ears that were faintly tinted in crimson. He could not help but chuckle.

By the time he finished giving his statement to the nearest available officer, darkness already descended on the city and the skyscrapers in the distance were dotted with numerous lights like stars. Mu Yuze fulfilled his words and drove He Juan to Su Xieren’s place, despite He Juan’s insistence that he could find his way there by himself.

Along the way, He Juan tried to reach Su Xieren to no avail. Just like Mu Yuze had said, Su Xieren’s phone had been turned off and it was simply impossible to find out about his condition at the moment. Even Jia Molei did not know where he had gone after leaving the hospital.

He Juan was so worried that he could not stop fidgeting on his seat. Although he knew that Su Xieren was a very rational and cool-headed person who would not resort to anything reckless, he just could not be rest assured. For him, Su Xieren was akin to his non-blood related younger brother. Now that the Beta had disappeared without telling anyone, how could he not worry?!

Mu Yuze glanced at his anxious appearance and commented, "It looks like Mr. Su is very important to you."

"That’s right ah," He Juan answered without thinking. "He’s my xiao didi[1]."

Mu Yuze’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. "...Then what about me?"

"Huh?" He Juan was so taken aback by that sudden question that his mind turned blank.

As he was still trying to register what Mu Yuze meant by that, he heard Mu Yuze mutter under his breath, "So many people are calling you ’Ge’..." All the while, he never took his eyes off the road and his expression hardly changed either. It was like he was just commenting about the weather.

"Xiao Ze..." He Juan’s mind was buzzing as he keenly sensed the sour note hidden underneath the omega’s seemingly casual comment. The way Mu Yuze said it gave He Juan a very strong impression that he was...

He Juan’s heart abruptly skipped a beat. Without him realizing, the question slipped out of his mouth.

"Are you... jealous?"

[1] Xiao = little; didi = little brother. Xiao didi is kinda like my dear lil bro. He Juan is emphasizing how important Su Xieren is for him in an informal/ slightly intimate way.
