Chapter 51: Intense Loss

He only managed to get up after performing a series of breathing exercises that Su Xieren taught him. Glancing at the clock, He Juan realized that it was only four am in the morning. However, there was no way he would be able to fall asleep anymore...

Rubbing his forehead, He Juan let out a sigh and finally resigned to his fate. His whole body felt sticky and uncomfortable due to the sweat so he went to grab another shirt from his bag and decided to refresh himself a little. There was no ensuite bathroom in the guest room and hence, he had to go out to the common one.

Passing through the hallway, He Juan took a glance at the silent house and knew immediately that Mu Yuze had not returned yet. Without him, the house felt so cold and desolate that it sent chills down He Juan’s spine.

After changing, he sat in the living room’s couch in a daze, not even bothering to turn on the lights. Then recalling something, he grabbed his phone and saw that there was a new voice note from Mu Yuze sent at 12.30 am in the morning. He Juan’s eyes lit up and he quickly placed the phone next to his ear. This time, there was a cacophony of people talking to each other as well as hasty footsteps in the background. It sounded very lively and chaotic.

Mu Yuze’s voice flowed as smoothly as ever. "We have locked in on a new suspect. I can’t tell you much, but I just want to inform you that your suspicion has been completely lifted. Good night, Juan-gege."

He Juan blankly played the voice note again and again, concentrating on the part where Mu Yuze said ’Juan-gege’. He could not help but compare it to the voice he had heard in his dream. After waking up, the voice had become slightly blurry in his mind and he could only remember how his heart was torn to pieces when he heard that. The teenager’s voice was hard to discern, especially when he was screaming and crying shrilly to the point of breathlessness.

Honestly, it did not sound like Mu Yuze at all, whose voice was so ethereal and calm that it seemed to have a bewitching power to it. After all, such a coincidence was not very likely... right?

Upon their first meeting, He Juan had asked whether they had met before and Mu Yuze had readily denied it. Mu Yuze obviously had no reason to lie so... this must be He Juan getting paranoid again. Yes, that must be it!

Leaning back on the couch, He Juan held his forehead, traced the rough line of the scar with the tip of his finger, and let out a forlorn sigh. "Have I become too obsessed with the past again?"

It was not like He Juan had not tried to find his family, or anyone who might know him. When he was still recovering from the aftereffect of the coma, he had discussed this matter with Jia Molei.

Back then, putting advertisements or missing posters on television needed an exorbitant amount of price, especially for longer duration. He had just woken up and did not even have a single cent on him, thus he could only rely on Jia Molei’s kindness. Nonetheless, seven years ago Jia Molei had not become a renowned surgeon like he was now. He was still a small doctor in a rural clinic who accidentally picked He Juan up and took the great risk to operate on him. With their meager savings, they could not afford to put missing posters on television at all and so, they could only settle with newspapers.

There were tons of missing posters in the newspaper each day, especially when the time was still tumultuous with the number of crimes increasing each day. However, He Juan had a very positive mindset. He’d thought that... as long as he still had a family member out there, as long as someone was still searching for him, then they would definitely find He Juan’s poster in the newspaper.

Alas... they had kept up the poster for two months, even to the extent of sending it to multiple local newspapers, yet He Juan did not receive any news whatsoever. His poster merged with hundred others like stone sinking into deep sea, unseen and unnoticed.

He felt very guilty for spending Jia Molei’s hard-earned money and then... he could only give up his fancy thoughts. He had to accept that... perhaps, he did not have anyone else in this world. Perhaps, nobody would even care if he were to disappear silently...

But now, the dream had just evoked a long-lost hope buried in He Juan’s heart. He Juan could not stop wondering. That person had obviously cried so hard for him, so... He Juan might at least mean something to him, right? Who was he? Was he still searching for He Juan until now?

Hope was a really dangerous thing. He Juan tilted his head to stare at the white ceiling and heaved out a drawn-out sigh. Seven years ago, he had hoped only to get disappointed again and again. Since then, he told himself to let go and lived in the present, that he had to accept that he would not be able to recover his past. It was really not easy to get to where he was now. As for the dream... he should not put too much hope into this lest he would be disappointed again. This time, He Juan really had no idea how to pick himself up if he were to fall again...

Warm yellow light spilled in from the street lamps outside, illuminating He Juan’s desolate silhouette. Sitting so still like that, he looked like he was going to merge into the darkness and vanished without a trace.

He Juan could not count how many times he had sat through the night after being awoken from the nightmare, quietly awaiting the sun to arise once again. Sometimes, Jia Molei would catch him and force him to go back to sleep, but more often than not, it was just He Juan dealing with this loneliness and intense loss all by himself.

When morning arrived, he would have recovered and nobody would be able to spot anything amiss with him.

This time, too, would not be any different.

He Juan’s alarm rang at 6 am and he slowly reached out to turn it off. Standing up, he stretched his waist and yawned. It was Sunday, but Mu Yuze was still as busy as ever because they had not solved the case yet. He Juan also had an important schedule ahead of him today.

After taking a nice hot bath and eating a simple breakfast, He Juan wrote a note to Mu Yuze and took the bus to Geming High School where he taught at. Students already mingled within the school grounds, after all there were a lot of extracurricular activities during the weekend, especially for sports and education events.

The competing students spotted him in one glance and waved excitedly. "Teacher He, over here!"

Clad in a dark blue formal shirt and straight black pants, He Juan gave a brilliant smile toward the students. "Good morning, everyone." He saw another teacher who was doing roll call and nodded at him politely. It was none other than Teacher Song who taught physics. He Juan had exchanged contact information with him yesterday.

He swept his gaze over the nervous yet excited students and could not help chuckling. "I see that you’re all in good condition today. Has everyone arrived?"

Even though there were a few students He Juan had never seen before as they were from different classes, right now everyone was extremely united because they had talked a little in the chat group yesterday. At least, the situation would not be too awkward. He Juan had also taken the effort to remember their names and faces one by one. He would make sure to do his job properly this time!

"Oh no!" Teacher Song frowned in concern. "Wu Yuan is still not here. Can anybody reach him?"

Wu Yuan?

He Juan abruptly recalled the student who wanted to talk to him yesterday only to run away in the end, and could not help the unease creeping into his heart. In the next moment, the phone in his pocket buzzed quietly. He Juan had especially put it in vibrate in order not to disturb a group of competing students.

He pulled it out and gave it a glance, surprised to see that it was actually Wu Yuan who was calling! Speak of the devil!
