Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 55: Teacher Trusts You
The competition venue was in one of the most prestigious universities in Yuyang City. It was currently bustling with students in different uniforms. Everyone had a solemn and slightly anxious look on their faces as they gathered with their respective groups.
"Alright, let’s do a final roll call." Teacher Song had had a lot of experience in accompanying competing students. He swiftly went through the procedure, calling out the students’ names one by one whilst adding a tick on the form in his hands. After that, he gave the usual prep talk to cheer the students up.
On the other hand, He Juan was currently looking up at the majestic and antique building in front of him. Every time he saw something like this, he could not help but wonder if he had come here in the past too.
Back then, had he gone to university? What major had he chosen? What kind of student was he, a troublemaker or a teacher’s pet? He Juan knew it was useless to imagine something like this, but he just could not bring himself to stop. It had already become a habit by now, almost a subconscious thought that took root in his mind.
Someone came to stop beside him, pulling him out of the wistful mood. He turned to find that it was Wu Yuan. "Has Teacher Song finished his speech?" He asked in mirth.
"En..." Wu Yuan nodded quietly. He stared at the peach blossom trees at the gate of the university, lost in thought. He Juan perceived that he had more to say and thus, he kept mum and patiently waited. As he expected, a few minutes later, he heard the little guy’s nervous voice. "T–Teacher He..."
"Hmm?"
"Do you think... I will be able to go to university? Do you think I will be able to become like... them?"
It suddenly dawned on He Juan that Wu Yuan was not looking at the peach blossom trees, but the university students who were sitting below them. They had books strewn all around them. Some students were laying directly on the grass with their heads cushioned on their arms, whilst some were reading and studying with a serious look. The atmosphere was especially tranquil and serene.
This would not be a rare occurrence within the university grounds but for Wu Yuan... it was an unattainable future he was desperately yearning for.
He Juan’s heart ached immensely for this quiet, well-behaved child. "Of course! You’re very smart. In the future, you will be able to enter a more renowned university. Teacher is sure of it!" He responded firmly and reached out to ruffle his hair again. "Wu Yuan ah... let me say it again. You only need to focus on your studies, make friends and have fun everyday. As for the rest, leave it to Teacher, okay?"
"Can I...?" He asked hesitantly.
The hope had been dangled in front of his eyes and he only needed to reach out to grasp it. However, he still did not dare to. He was afraid... terribly afraid that it would disappear in front of his eyes. It was okay if he had never known how warm the hope was. But once he knew... he did not know what he would do if he were to slip into the abyss again.
He Juan let out a sigh. He understood that it would not be easy to ask Wu Yuan to trust him right now. Making that one call might have already crossed his boundary. He Juan did not waste his breath trying to convince the little guy again. He only nodded and shot him a reassuring smile.
Then recalling something, he reached into his pocket and took out his notebook, scribbled something on it, tore the page before handing it to Wu Yuan’s hands.
"What is this?" Wu Yuan scrutinized it in confusion. He saw a string of unfamiliar numbers and an address written below.
"It’s the place I am staying in right now. If you bump into some trouble, don’t hesitate to knock on my door. As for that number..." He Juan’s lips tugged into a gentle smile. "It belongs to the most reliable person in the world. You already know my number. If — I said if — you can’t reach me one day, then try to call that number. He will definitely help you."
Wu Yuan could not help but get curious. "...Who is it?" He noticed that Teacher He’s expression when talking about this person was quite unusual. The man always had a smile on his face, yet just now, there was a tinge of pride and genuine joy that Wu Yuan had never seen before.
But He Juan only laughed with no intention of responding whatsoever. He gestured at the students who were starting to gather in front of the university building. "Look, Wu Yuan, your competition has almost started."
"O–Oh!" Wu Yuan revealed a nervous and fidgety look. He snuck a few glances at He Juan, seemingly wanting to say something but did not know where to start.
"You can do it." He Juan patted his head with a reassuring smile on his face. "Teacher trusts you."
That was all Wu Yuan needed to hear for his eyes to light up. He nodded firmly and turned back to join the stream of students, his back looking especially straight and heroic like a soldier marching to the battlefield, unlike the cowardly appearance he had yesterday. He Juan’s smile lingered on his face as he watched Wu Yuan enter the building.
He really wanted to see this little guy go to a university peacefully, the thought sprung up in his mind, unbidden.
He Juan was taken aback by this sudden urge which came out of nowhere. Without him realizing, the impulse had taken root in his heart and filled him with an inexplicable burst of strength. His silver eyes gleamed in determination as he started to form multiple plans in his mind.
The competition would take more than half a day. As the accompanying teachers, He Juan and Teacher Song were allowed to walk around in the meantime. He Juan’s mild and gentle personality made it easy for him to befriend people and before the hour hand struck twelve, he already knew how many cousins were there in Teacher Song’s family as well as his grandmother’s persistent wish for him to quickly get a wife before she died. He bemoaned his fate as a single dog and finally expressed his envy toward He Juan, begging if he could introduce some of the great beauty’s friends to him.
Hearing this, He Juan paused and his gaze toward Teacher Song became a tad complicated. Mu Yuze’s colleagues... they were all competent and tough police officers, and the females were especially fierce. He Juan had gotten a taste of it after being locked in the interrogation room for half a day. Could Teacher Song really handle them...?
Teacher Song was taken aback. "Why are you looking at me like that, Teacher He?"
"Nothing," He Juan put on a trademark smile on his face. "Then I will ask around for you. But don’t put too much hope on me, okay?"
Teacher Song was hesitating now. He felt like a great beauty’s friend would be another great beauty, after all only birds of the same feathers would flock together. He glanced at He Juan’s superb physique and extremely high appearance index then compared it to his own, and sank into deep contemplation.
With a pained look, he shook his head. "On second thought, forget it. I shouldn’t have yearned for swan meat when I am only a toad."
He Juan blinked, amused. Teacher Song was really such a funny man. He Juan liked him a lot.
The two got along well, talking about everything and anything. But if Teacher Song paid a little more attention, then he would realize that he was mostly talking about himself while He Juan only listened to him with interest. Every time he tried to switch the topic to He Juan, the Alpha would smoothly deflect it. He did it so subtly that Teacher Song never realized anything until the end. He only thought that He Juan was such a good person to talk to.
After they finished their lunch in the university cafeteria, He Juan finally received a message from Su Xieren who had been missing since yesterday. His heart skipped a beat when he read it.
[Da-ge, do you have free time right now? There’s something I want to tell you.]
