Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 57: [Bonus - ] Strict Requirement
For a while, He Juan was at an utter loss of words.
Myriads of thoughts flashed through his mind at a high speed. What did Miss Zhao leave this secret message for? Had she always known that this day would come? That the police would rummage through her belongings, found this one letter which held no importance whatsoever, then handed it to her boyfriend who would discover the truth? Or... was it not the police that Miss Zhao was wary of, but another party they were still unaware of?
As He Juan took in Su Xieren’s disheveled appearance, a guess popped up in his mind and his eyes flew wide in surprise. "Then the matter you said you have to take care of—"
"En," Su Xieren cut him off once again, having read the direction of his thoughts. "I drove to Mount Yixing right after I opened the letter. Xinya has left me such an obvious clue, how can I not follow it through?"
"Oh God, Xieren..." He Juan held his forehead. He did not know whether he should feel worried or angry. Soon afterward, he realized that it was neither concern nor anger he was feeling. It was fear. He was afraid that something terrible would happen to Su Xieren or worse, he would be targeted by the perpetrator who had killed Miss Zhao! As He Juan recalled Miss Zhao’s tragic corpse, he could not help but lash out at the Beta in front of him,
"You... Don’t you know how dangerous it is?! Driving back and forth to Mount Yixing overnight, and alone at that! Why didn’t you tell the police and hand the letter over to them?!" He Juan let out a frustrated exhale and his voice softened, tinged with a hint of helplessness. "...At least, you should give me or Molei a head’s up. Had we known, we could have tagged along with you. What should we do if an accident happens to you midway?"
As He Juan nagged ceaselessly, Su Xieren merely stared at him with a calm look and let him talk as much as he wanted.
When He Juan saw this expression of his, he instantly knew that Su Xieren was just humoring him and did not actually listen to what he said. He Juan’s lips twitched into an exasperated smile. What was the use of lecturing Su Xieren? He had always known how stubborn and unyielding the Su Xieren was despite his placid temperament. Right now, there was nothing more important than him returning safely.
"...Nothing happens to you, right?" He Juan asked worriedly as he gave Su Xieren a once-over.
"Don’t worry, da-ge." Su Xieren replied coolly. "If something had happened, I would not be sitting here in front of you now."
As much as He Juan thought that what Su Xieren said made perfect sense, he also got a very strong urge to slap him on the back of his head. How could he say something like that so casually?! He Juan reached out to tug on Su Xieren’s wrist and forced him to knock on the table. "Knock on wood! You silly child, watch what you said!"
With a look as if he had nothing left to live for, Su Xieren could only comply and rapped his knuckles on the table thrice. Only then did He Juan huff and agreed to let him go.
Su Xieren sipped on his coffee, asking expressionlessly, "Are you done?"
He Juan shot him an displeased look. He had a belly of complaints to tell, but because he knew that Su Xieren would only treat it as a fart, he could only swallow it back down. Helpless, he gestured for Su Xieren to speak.
The Beta put down his coffee and clasped his hands on the table. His expression suddenly became serious and seeing that, He Juan could not help but straighten up as well. "Da-ge, I have my own reason why I chose to go alone. I believe that this is what Xinya wanted me to do as well and... I want to respect her last wish." Su Xieren lowered his lashes and a hint of sadness flashed imperceptibly across his eyes.
However, he was a very logical and cool-headed man. His innate temperament did not allow him to lose control of his emotions so easily. As such, when he raised his eyes again, He Juan already could not find any traces of grief inside. "Da-ge, you have always said that you feel comfortable in my presence, that you can relax and talk freely about your feelings." Su Xieren’s lips twitched into the barest of smiles. "You have also asked me countless times why I didn’t become a therapist instead."
He Juan nodded tentatively. Although he was confused why Su Xieren shifted the topic out of nowhere, he still chose to wait and listen. He had a hunch that whatever Su Xieren was going to talk about had something to do with his relationship with Miss Zhao.
His conjecture was proven in the next second as Su Xieren continued, "...Xinya has also asked me the exact same question. I think... she saw me in the exact same way as you do."
***
Su Xieren met Zhao Xinya a few years ago — five years ago, to be exact. At that time, Su Xieren’s career as a professional physical therapist and acupuncture had just taken off. All of his clients were either his acquaintances, the elderlies in his neighborhood or the people who were referred to him by others. As for Zhao Xinya, she was included in the last category.
Su Xieren’s first impression of the woman was that she was an odd and timid one. She had delicate features, yet because of her gloomy disposition, it made people a bit uncomfortable when they looked at her for long.
Of course, it did not pose a problem for Su Xieren. He could even handle He Juan, the most problematic and troublesome patient in his entire career. And if he could be brutally honest, compared to He Juan, other people were simply nothing. If Su Xieren could use a metaphor, then He Juan would be a BOSS level patient whereas Zhao Xinya was only in mob level.
As such, Su Xieren was able to treat Zhao Xinya normally like any other patient.
He had no idea that Zhao Xinya had been switching back and forth between a lot of therapists. Perhaps it was because of her demanding job that required her to sit in front of the computer all day long, or perhaps it was injuries from her younger days, but Zhao Xinya always felt intense soreness and throbbing pain on her neck and back area. She had been accustomed to enduring her suffering in silence and so, she had no plans to seek professional help in the beginning.
Alas, the discomfort was getting more and more unbearable for her, especially in winter when the temperature would drop below zero degrees celsius. When that time came, the pain would become too much for her to take. It got to the point where she would lay paralyzed in the bed all day, hindering her from completing her job well.
Here comes the most crucial problem. She had a very strict requirement for her therapist — which was also the reason why she had difficulty finding someone who would comply with her.
She firmly requested not to be touched, no matter if it was male or female, old or young. Rather than aversion, it was more like fear and disgust. She would just hand over the x-ray results from the hospital to the therapist and consult their opinion. As for personal tests and cross-examination, she rejected them vehemently. It was because of this unreasonable demand that a lot of therapists were unwilling to take her on.
—How was a physical therapist supposed to cure their patients without touching and examining them?
