Chosen By The Lover's Constellation-Chapter 162: Children of Mana, Part Forty-Five
{Caroline}
The truck rattled along the rugged road, its occupants tense and alert, their senses heightened by the looming threat that lurked ahead.
[We played right into his plan,] Caroline sighed. [Hopefully, we can recover from this. The city shouldn’t be lost just yet.]
At that moment, Caroline’s gaze flickered from the road to the side mirror, a frown creasing her brow as she caught sight of a dark mass emerging from the shadows.
"Stop!" Caroline’s voice cut through the tension, her tone commanding as she issued the abrupt command to their driver.
The vehicle screeched to a halt, the suddenness of the motion jolting its occupants.
Mel, Desmond, and Xi exchanged uneasy glances, their apprehension mirrored in their wide eyes as they observed the ominous figures that now blocked their path.
Fiends, dark, fleshy, and foreboding, positioned themselves with an eerie precision, their malevolent presence casting a pall over the desolate road.
"Should I just drive by ’em?" The driver asked Caroline, glancing back.
"Yes, I..." She trailed off. "Wait."
"Huh?"
As she said that, the driver looked ahead and saw what had caught Caroline’s attention. Everyone did.
"Is that...?" Xi murmured, her expression a mix of fear and disbelief as she caught sight of the figure at the forefront of the encroaching horde.
Caroline’s jaw tightened, her gaze unwavering as she locked eyes with the dark silhouette that stood amidst the advancing Fiends.
Jack, his form cloaked in shadows, exuded an aura of malevolence that sent a shiver down Caroline’s spine as he stood in the center of the field.
[What in the world...?]
"Well, looks like our target saved us the trouble of looking for him," Desmond stated, getting out of the car.
"W-Wait!" Caroline called out.
"We can’t just sit here," Desmond replied, his voice tinged with urgency as he glanced between his companions. "We should do something while we have the chance!"
Caroline’s mind raced, weighing their options amidst the palpable tension that hung heavy in the air.
[He planned this far ahead, clearly,] she thought. [It’s not hard to guess that he wants us to fight him. Likely because he has more forces than we can see right now,] Caroline thought, throwing a quick look around the field.
[But...] She quickly added. [Desmond’s right. If he’s here, standing right before us, isn’t this the best chance we’re going to get to put an end to his life?]
It felt obvious she and the others were walking a thin line between bravery and stupidity. But, the more she thought about it...
... The more she wanted to end things here and now.
"Fine."
With a resolute nod, she made her decision, her resolve firm as she turned to address her companions, getting out of the car as well.
"We’re not running from this," Caroline declared, her voice ringing with determination. "We face him head-on."
Mel’s gaze hardened, her fists clenched at her sides as she braced herself for the impending confrontation. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
"We’re not going to let him terrorize us any longer," she agreed, her voice tinged with a fierce resolve.
Desmond’s expression mirrored the determination of his companions, his features set in a steely resolve as he prepared himself for the battle that lay ahead.
"Let’s show him what we can do, then," he affirmed, his voice tinged with quiet resolve.
With a shared nod, the group steeled themselves for the confrontation ahead, their hearts pounding in unison as they prepared to confront the darkness that loomed before them.
Caroline moved first.
Her swords danced with deadly precision, parrying blows from lashing tentacles and striking back with calculated ferocity.
Her movements were fluid yet controlled, a testament to her years of training and unwavering resolve. She needed to be at her best, today.
Beside her, Xi channeled crackling lightning into her arms, transforming them into lethal conduits of magical energy that sliced through the Fiends with electrifying precision. Pieces of flesh went flying left and right with each slash that Xi dealt.
Mel’s lightning bolts arced through the air, spears of electricity zapping and sizzling as they found their targets among the dark creatures. Each strike resonated with power, momentarily stunning their adversaries and buying precious moments in the intense melee.
Desmond, fueled by determination, darted and weaved through the chaos with unparalleled speed and agility.
He did not waste his time with the Fiends. His target was Jack himself.
He moved between enemies, passing one Fiend after another, before he reached his true opponent. A flurry of blows followed, with Desmond trying his damn hardest to kill the other man.
But, Jack deftly evaded each blow with uncanny speed and reflexes.
It was clear to Caroline. She could see his every move, every feint and counter, analyzing his tactics even amidst the chaos of combat.
Desmond was clearly the more skilled fighter. But, at this point, Jack had simply absorbed too many people. His innate speed was more than Desmond could handle.
Then came the pivotal moment.
Desmond, propelled by a growing frustration and a desire to end the threat once and for all, launched a lightning-fast assault aimed directly at Jack.
But the dark figure, his eyes gleaming with a cruel intelligence, sidestepped the attack effortlessly, leaving Desmond exposed to a dangerous counter.
Caroline’s heart skipped a beat.
Jack’s palm was aimed forward.
Desmond was off-balance, his eyes wide.
[He’s about to be absorbed!]
In a split-second decision, Caroline surged forward, moving with every bit of energy she could muster.
She shoved Desmond out of the way.
But, now, she was in the way.
Jack’s emotionless face shifted. A smile bloomed on his lips.
[Was... Was this his intention?]
Then, the suction began.
Caroline pulled back with all her might.
The world seemed to slow around her as Caroline grappled against the overwhelming force threatening to consume her.
She gritted her teeth, pouring every ounce of her strength and will into resisting the pull. But the dark energy surged.
She could see transparent tendrils wrapping around her form as she struggled against the inevitable.
[I-I can’t let this happen.]
For the first time in a while, Caroline wasn’t making note of her own power out of arrogance.
No, she simply knew that if Jack succeeded right now, if her power became his, Jack would be unstoppable.
"Caroline!" Desmond’s voice rang out, filled with alarm and urgency.
"AaaaaaAAAAAAGH!" Caroline borderline screamed as she tried to pull herself away.
As the sinister pull of Jack’s dark power threatened to engulf her, Caroline braced herself for the inevitable.
She looked back. Mel, Xi, and Desmond were all caught up in their own fights, unable to push through the Fiends standing between them and Caroline.
Every muscle strained against the relentless force but it didn’t feel like it was making much of a difference.
But then, amidst the chaos and despair, a sudden sound pierced through the clamor of battle.
A sharp caw echoed from above.
Caroline’s heart leaped with a glimmer of hope as she looked up and saw Miss Taylor’s sear flying down toward their position.
Her spirits lifted, if only momentarily, as the distant sound signified the arrival of reinforcements.
But as relief washed over her, Jack took this as a sign that he needed to end this now.
He doubled his efforts, channeling an unprecedented surge of dark energy in a final attempt to claim her.
Caroline gritted her teeth, her muscles burning with exertion as she fought against the overwhelming force threatening to consume her. With help in sight, Caroline’s spirit had been reinvigorated.
And then, a miraculous reprieve came in the form of an unexpected intervention.
With a resounding crash, the sear hurtled from the skies above, its massive form plummeting towards the battlefield below.
Jack’s eyes widened with realization as the towering creature bore down upon him, its sheer weight and momentum an unstoppable force that he moved to avoid.
Caroline’s heart skipped a beat as the sear forced Jack to move away, hitting the ground, the impact shaking the very ground beneath her feet.
She watched in stunned disbelief as the dark figure was forced back by the immense force of the sear’s descent, his grip on her finally relinquished.
As the chaos subsided, Caroline staggered to her feet, her body aching from the exertion of her harrowing ordeal.
With a sense of overwhelming relief, she watched as Lianna, Enverna, and Miss Taylor leaped from the fallen sear’s back, their faces etched with determination as they prepared to join the fray.
"Are you alright?" Enverna asked, running up to Caroline.
It was honestly heartwarming to see this much concern on her face, after how things had changed between them.
"I am," Caroline replied quietly. "Beat him, please."
"I’ll try my best."
On that note, Enverna stepped forward, Storm held in her hands. Beside her, Lianna took out her bow and Miss Taylor brandished her blades. Jack gestured at the group, prompting his Fiends to swarm them.
And, Caroline couldn’t help at all.
Caroline’s strength spent, she sank to her knees, her gaze locked on the unfolding battle before her.
She knew that victory was far from assured, but in that moment, all she could do was place her trust in the others.
