Consequences of Dumping the Obsessive Boss: Stuck with Him Forever-Chapter 264: A Superficially Harmonious Relationship
Summer Lowell shook her head, "Food outside isn’t good, I prefer the meals made by our cook at home. I came back right after I finished my work."
Just as Summer expected, Maxim Sinclair really liked what she said: "The cook at home was hired by the butler after searching all over Stellarion. I’m glad you like it, my efforts didn’t go to waste."
The butler, who hadn’t walked far, turned back with a smile when he heard this: "A few days ago, the young master told me that if the home-cooked meals suit the Young Madam’s taste, he’ll give the cook a raise starting next month. I’ll have to inform the chef about this soon, it’ll make him happy."
Telling jokes and chatting merrily, Summer and Maxim walked into the living room, where the table was just filled with dishes. A maid placed a small ceramic pot with soup that had simmered all afternoon on the table, and set the tableware in place, inviting Maxim and Summer to join them.
Avoiding taking the car, she walked over to delay time, avoiding dining with Maxim at the same table. With the excuse of changing clothes, she went upstairs to switch into something more casual before slowly coming downstairs.
By the table downstairs, Maxim was fiddling with his phone, and it was clear from his untouched chopsticks that he hadn’t started eating.
It seemed he was waiting for her to come down.
Hearing footsteps, Maxim looked up and invited Summer, "Why did it take you so long to change? The food’s getting cold, but the soup’s temperature is just right now. Come, eat."
Summer sat at the table with mixed feelings and ate quietly.
She didn’t notice Maxim’s gaze sweeping over her head several times from across the table.
Halfway through the meal, when he no longer had an appetite, Maxim put down his chopsticks, picked up a napkin, and nonchalantly asked Summer, "What kept you busy today? I heard from the butler that you were in quite a hurry when you left. Was there something troublesome? You can tell me if there’s something I can help you with."
"It’s nothing. Vivian’s birthday is coming up. I searched online for gifts yesterday, but I couldn’t find anything suitable despite looking for a long time. Today, I wanted to go out to see, but I still couldn’t find anything I liked, so I came back."
Calmly lifting her head, Summer spoke a few words casually, glanced at Maxim to show she wasn’t guilty, and then continued eating.
Maxim immediately saw through her little ruse and didn’t plan to let Summer off so easily: "Choosing a gift, huh? That’s easy. In the study, in my safe, there are many pieces of jewelry acquired through auctions. You can pick a set to give to that Dr. Sullivan."
"That won’t do," Summer shook her head, rejecting his suggestion, "The jewelry in your safe is extraordinary, and even if Vivian and I multiplied our savings several times, we couldn’t afford it. Besides, they’re your things. To use them as my own would be insincere."
"We’re already married; what’s mine is yours. Why divide things into yours and mine? I see that Dr. Sullivan is very important to you. Such an important friend deserves a valuable gift," Maxim said, continuing the conversation with a playful tone, "By the way, where did you go today? You’ve been in Stellarion for less than a year, and given your workaholic nature, you probably aren’t familiar with where to shop. Why not let me arrange someone to accompany you."
"Sure, I can’t accept a gift using your items, but having someone guide me for shopping is fine. Just don’t find someone from your company. Mixing work and personal matters could lead to gossip about you later."
Summer tried to maintain a calm mindset, avoiding messy thoughts, and chatted with Maxim from a friend’s perspective, calmly.
"Accompanying the chairman’s wife for shopping would indeed become a hot topic at the company for a while, but it’s good. It prepares them in advance, and they won’t be surprised about who my wife is when we hold the wedding," Maxim said earnestly, as if he and Summer would definitely have a wedding.
Having already decided which country and city to move to after leaving, Summer, for the first time, did not firmly express that she wouldn’t have a wedding with him. Instead, she changed the subject: "You’re young and have achieved so much. Your wedding and your chosen wife will surely become hot topics in Stellarion. But if you choose a professional woman fitting your status, it could even boost your stock prices."
"What I need is a loving partner, not a business associate," Maxim unexpectedly said in a romantic tone. "It’s okay, you’re not used to being my wife yet. I heard it’s called pre-wedding jitters. In time, you’ll get used to it. Take your time eating; I’m done. See you tonight."
As Maxim talked and left, Summer suddenly laughed, not knowing why.
Their current way of interacting was quite interesting, not as tense as before, yet beneath the calm surface, there were hidden issues. She was certain that Maxim knew her heart wasn’t fully settled yet.
At nine-thirty in the evening, despite going to bed early, Summer tossed and turned, unable to sleep. She lifted her blanket and stood by the window for a while, looking at the night view. Taking the empty cup from the table, she planned to go downstairs to get some water and check the study.
Just after stepping out the door, she saw Assistant Collins coming upstairs with a cup of coffee.
Upon seeing Summer, Assistant Collins greeted her politely.
Summer nodded, "Why the coffee so late at night?"
Remembering Maxim’s instructions, Assistant Collins helplessly shook his head, sighing: "The company is dealing with a particularly difficult project recently; it’s hard to say if I’ll even sleep tonight. There’s an online meeting later, so I need coffee. Otherwise, I can’t hold up."
"What project is so difficult?" Summer yawned, appearing to ask offhandedly.
"In Yuvana. President Sinclair is interested in a piece of land for a project, but there are many vying for it. Different parties are displaying their talents, all hoping to secure it. We’re working overtime because of this."
As they spoke, the distance between them became very close.
Looking at Assistant Collins heading to the study, Summer advised with concern, "If you’re just drinking it, fine, but he hasn’t been sleeping much lately, and he’s had insomnia before. If you give him coffee at this hour, he’ll probably be sleepless again."
"Don’t worry, Madam. This coffee isn’t for President Sinclair. He’s fully focused on acquiring that piece of land and doesn’t have time to rest!"
"Then hurry back to the study. I won’t disturb you," Summer said as she stepped down the stairs.
At the study door, Assistant Collins paused, wanting to glance back at Summer, but in the end, he restrained himself.
