Contract Marriage: Let's Make It Real, Mrs. Sterling!-Chapter 332 - 331: New Year’s Gift: Matching Necklace to the Ring
Outside the window, the sound of fireworks suddenly erupted, one after another, illuminating the sky with various patterns, dazzling and splendid, lighting up half the sky.
Every household was brightly lit, and Mia Sutton could still hear the cheerful voices of children in the neighborhood.
"Happy New Year, Mr. Sterling!"
Jensen Sterling looked at the young girl, who tilted her head to look at him, her eyes sparkling, wishing him a Happy New Year.
After a few seconds, he slowly curled his lips and said softly, "Happy New Year, Mia."
The two stared into each other’s eyes for a long time before Mia Sutton’s eyes curved into a smile, and she laughed.
So childish, yet it felt quite nice.
Jensen Sterling placed the red envelope on the bedside and then walked over to fetch something, which Mia Sutton looked at in puzzlement.
Jensen Sterling smiled slightly, "I didn’t prepare a red envelope for you, but I have something else in its place, a New Year’s gift. Is that okay?"
Mia Sutton immediately responded, "...It’s okay, I’m not picky." She would like anything he gave her.
Jensen Sterling chuckled, not even looking before agreeing, such an agreeable Mia.
Then he handed her the item, "Do you want to see for yourself?"
Mia Sutton nodded, "Yes." She took the box and opened it.
Inside was a necklace, full of design flair, with a beautiful pendant. After Mia Sutton picked it up and looked at it, her eyes brightened, pointing at the pendant, "Is this...the same as the ring?"
Jensen Sterling replied, "Yes, it’s inconvenient to wear rings every day, but you don’t have to worry about that with this; you can wear it always."
He had specially commissioned the necklace to match the design of their wedding rings.
Mia Sutton glanced down at Jensen Sterling’s fingers, handsome and well-defined, with a ring on his ring finger, one he had put on during an event, one everyone just assumed was an ordinary decorative ring, without thinking anything else of it.
For a long time, Mia Sutton lowered her head slightly, murmuring, "Sorry, Mr. Sterling."
Jensen Sterling paused, "...What’s wrong?"
Mia Sutton: "I haven’t been wearing a ring." She wasn’t wearing it, but Jensen Sterling kept wearing his.
After a moment, the man chuckled softly, indulgently, "I was wondering what was wrong. It’s nothing, and besides, will you even wear it?"
Mia Sutton pursed her lips, hesitated for a moment, then slowly shook her head, "Not right now."
Previously, Jensen Sterling had said he didn’t want to announce anything publicly; she respected his wishes, not caring either way. Though he hadn’t officially announced it publicly, he never hid it from colleagues or friends, and she understood.
As he’d said, her purpose was for people to know he was married, to avoid trouble, and to account to his family.
Even though that was the original idea, she understood.
As of now...though their hearts were in sync, Mia Sutton still didn’t want to announce it too soon.
Jensen Sterling held a significant position in the industry, and she wanted to stand on equal footing before announcing it to the world.
Not for any other reason, just so that when people talk about it in the future, they wouldn’t say Jensen Sterling’s wife wasn’t a match for him, avoiding such negative comments.
She also didn’t want to be treated as an exception because of Jensen Sterling.
She wanted to catch up with his pace and walk alongside him.
This was Mia Sutton’s pride.
...
Jensen Sterling also understood her thoughts, smiled and said, "That’s why I had this made; if you can’t wear a ring, at least you can wear a necklace, right?"
Jensen Sterling reached out and ruffled Mia Sutton’s hair.
Though he said so, Mia Sutton still felt a bit troubled. After a while, she lifted her head, her eyes firmly on the person in front of her:
"But, Mr. Sterling, rest assured, I will work hard, strive to catch up with your pace, and then wear the ring openly."
Jensen Sterling chuckled upon hearing this, knowing the young girl had her own pride, so he never interfered too much with her affairs.
At most, he just provided an opportunity, relying ultimately on her own abilities. If she couldn’t be helped, even given opportunities, she wouldn’t make it.
So, Mia Sutton’s current achievements were all earned by herself.
...
Jensen Sterling took the necklace and said softly, "Lower your head."
Mia Sutton obediently complied, as Jensen Sterling put the necklace around her neck.
While putting on the necklace, his gaze slightly downcast, with a hint of a smile in his eyes, he asked, "How will you work hard?"
Mia Sutton lifted her head immediately, eyes firm, explaining in earnest, "I’ll take on more roles, partake in more projects, work hard to improve my acting skills, win more awards."
She spoke with such seriousness, as though making a vow, with a sense that she wouldn’t rest until it was accomplished.
Jensen Sterling chuckled softly, "Don’t move, it’s not on yet."
Mia Sutton: "...Okay." Then she obediently lowered her head again.
"So, I’ll wait for the day my dear Mia introduces me to the fans?"
Mia Sutton: "Yes."
She surely would, after the New Year, she would take on projects, work diligently, and quickly catch up with Mr. Sterling.
...
The two talked for a long time, from giving New Year’s money to New Year’s gifts, all this weariness made Mia Sutton truly sleepy.
But she looked at her bed: "..."
After a while, "Mr. Sterling, how are we...going to sleep?"
Jensen Sterling paused, raised an eyebrow slightly, "Shouldn’t we sleep on the bed?"
"But the bed’s a bit small. Won’t it be cramped?"
Since Mia Sutton lived alone, it was a single bed, comfortable for one person but obviously cramped for two.
...
Inside the room, the lights were off, and the sound of fireworks outside had subsided, marking the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one.
On the bed, Mia Sutton was nestled in someone’s arm, clearly feeling the broad chest.
Mia Sutton carefully shifted, and a hoarse voice from above her head said, "Sleep peacefully, don’t move."
Mia Sutton immediately stopped moving, and the room fell silent again. After a long while, Mia Sutton asked softly, "Mr. Sterling...with the way I’m sleeping, doesn’t your arm hurt?"
Jensen Sterling: "No."
Mia Sutton murmured in response, then lay obediently for a while before starting to move again.
Even though when Giselle Summers had visited before, she had slept with Jensen Sterling too, back then they weren’t sure of each other’s feelings, so they slept without a care. She should have been used to it by now, but still...things were different.
Just when Mia Sutton was about to move again, the man pinned her down with his arm and leg, his voice hoarse, "Mia, if you are not sleepy, we can do something else."
Mia Sutton didn’t initially react, "What..." else was there to do, but halfway through her sentence, she swallowed the remaining words.
"Sleep-sleep-sleep, I’m going to sleep now." She immediately stopped moving after saying that.
