Cultivation Begins with Caring for Sister-in-law-Chapter 468: Breaking the City, Pursuit (Part 2)
As Chen Mo drew his bow and locked his arrow on Tie Mutie, Xia Zhining ordered the Vermilion Bird Guard to push the Red Coat Cannon forward and aim at the city gate tower.
Once the angle was adjusted, nine Red Coat Cannons fired, and fire pythons more than ten feet long shot obliquely toward the city gate tower, spewing fiercely.
Meanwhile, Timotheus had been preoccupied with matters related to Tie Mutie, completely unaware, resulting in a flower bullet exploding directly at his feet, with shards of iron flying everywhere.
A dark black innate spiritual qi manifested around Timotheus, shielding him from the blast damage, but the deafening explosion still left his ears ringing.
As if silenced, he didn’t even hear the words of his personal soldiers nearby.
The next moment, feeling something, he moved his steps, and his figure instantly appeared more than ten feet away. Not long after he used his body technique to leave, the city gate tower where he stood immediately collapsed, burying the beams and tiles with the personal soldiers who had not yet evacuated.
"Cough cough..."
Two Jin Xia generals rushed out of the ruins, stirring up a cloud of dust. The protective spiritual qi around them emitted a faint glow, and a bit of fresh blood trickled from the corners of their mouths.
"Damn..."
Just as they cursed and opened their mouths, the next moment, their eyes widened.
From a distance, several fire pythons shot violently toward the city walls, unleashing flames, and the archers covering the infantry’s retreat on the walls suffered heavy casualties as they failed to dodge.
More people were left with their ears ringing from the shock, retreating from the walls in panic.
"Here it comes again, here it comes again..."
"How can the Song Army keep unleashing these strange thunders..."
"Could it be divine retribution? Save me."
"..."
Timotheus’s face was extremely grim, his eyes surging with immense anger. Before the campaign against the Great Song, his elder brother and sister-in-law had entrusted him to take good care of Tie Mutie. But not only did he fail to do so, he witnessed Tie Mutie being shot dead by Chen Mo, and now the city wall was in disarray.
These were the strong young men under his command, and with them being decimated, whom would he, the General, command?
"Chen... Mo..." Timotheus gritted his teeth and spat out the name, even considering his resolve to fight a battle to the death with Chen Mo in this Yao’er City.
It was the sound of shouts and screams from inside the city that kept him calm.
It turned out Chen’s army had already broken into the city.
Without the obstruction of the archers, the Xianzhen Guard soldiers, wielding round shields and horizontal sabers, pursued and annihilated the defeated Jin Xia Infantry as they flooded into Yao’er City.
The Xianzhen Guard Soldiers had already engaged in mellee with the Jin Xia Infantry, causing some difficulty for the Jin Xia soldiers armed with crossbows.
In contrast, the Xianzhen Guard swung their sabers down decisively.
Shao Jinneng did not lead the Brave Cavalry Guard into the city but instead pursued the remaining enemies outside the city with his men.
Some Jin Xia Infantry, in their panic, ran not into the city but fled toward the hills on either side.
Shao Jinneng immediately ordered, forming two squads with Wei Qing, to chase in the direction of the fleeing enemy.
Inside the city, the Jin Xia Army wasn’t a rabble like the Celestial Master Army, but a formidable force with impressive combat prowess.
They quickly organized a resistance in the city, inflicting significant casualties on the Xianzhen Guard, even driving them back from the city at one point.
"General, perhaps we can lure all of Chen’s army in for a fight. Even without the might of warhorses, we, the Jin Xia warriors, can defeat them," one eager general remarked to Timotheus upon seeing Chen’s soldiers being slain.
Not to mention, Jin Xia soldiers were physically superior to Chen’s soldiers, and they excelled not just in archery but also in wrestling.
Moreover, the strange thunders seemed unable to exert their power within the city. They could very well engage in a bloodbath with Chen’s army.
Timotheus had descended from the city wall and stood atop a civilian house’s wall, surveying from afar. His subordinate’s words tempted him.
But he quickly suppressed this impulse.
After the Xianzhen Guard’s retreat, the Divine Courage, and Divine Martial Guards quickly charged in.
The Divine Martial Guard even brought along more than a dozen supply wagons, charging forward in formation, breaking through the Jin Xia’s defenses organized within the city in one fell swoop.
The Jin Xia Army rose to resist.
One must admit that the combat intensity of regular Jin Xia soldiers was indeed stronger than that of Chen’s army.
After all, the Jin Xia Army had trained longer, at least for over a decade, having battled even with Gao Liao, gaining rich combat experience.
Whereas Chen’s army, despite their participation in numerous battles and rigorous training, had only been established for less than five years.
Without relying on weapon superiority, an all-out brawl with the Jin Xia Army would be a challenging task.
But unfortunately for Jin Xia, Chen’s army did possess the advantage of superior weaponry and made full use of it.
When the Jin Xia Army seemed to muster the momentum to reverse the situation.
The Divine Courage Guard lit something and hurled it towards the advancing Jin Xia forces.
Before the Jin Xia soldiers could discern what it was.
"Boom Boom!"
The pottery bomb exploded immediately, unleashing shards of iron and wooden splinters amidst the smoke, scattering everywhere like a violent storm. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
Instantly, cries of agony filled the air.
Although its sound was no less than the explosion of a flower bullet.
"It’s the strange thunder."
"Run."
"They can all use the strange thunder, run...ah ah ah..."
As hundreds of loud explosions rang out across the city, each Jin Xia soldier’s face couldn’t conceal their fear.
Seeing their comrades around writhing in pain, covering their bleeding eyes and chests, those on the ground, rolling in pain, were thrown into utter disarray.
The more it happened, the more it struck blows to their morale.
And this was not the end.
"Woooo..."
The sound of horns blared.
The powerful mechanism instantly released arrows.
The sharp and strong crossbow arrows, with deadly whistles, pierced through the hot air, carrying a force of thousands of pounds, penetrating their vine armor and embedding deep into their chests, propelling them backward with immense force, crashing to the ground, motionless at last.
After tossing the pottery bombs, the Divine Courage Guard deployed the Divine Arm Crossbows.
The arrows from the Divine Arm Crossbows could pierce even the iron armor.
Crossbow bolts fired continuously, piling up Jin Xia bodies like mountains.
Chen’s army advanced step by step.
Crossbows and longbows provided ranged firepower; pottery bombs dealt extensive damage and could dismantle fires while round shields neutralized the threat of Jin Xia’s longbows, and long spears stabbed, horizontal sabers beheaded, Jin Xia’s army couldn’t withstand Chen’s assault.
Timotheus was dumbstruck.
Hadn’t the Great Song supposedly declined and decayed?
Now, with these strange thunders and powerful crossbows...
And this was just a regional force.
This was simply absurd.
Inwardly cursing his luck, Timotheus felt a surge of fright as he observed more and more of Chen’s soldiers entering the city.
Timotheus could only reluctantly issue an order, "Rear guard replace the front guard, retreat, retreat immediately."
