Chapter 57: Family and money

RAGNA POV...

.

.

.

The moment I pushed the door open, I was swallowed by a crowd.

Worried parents. Anxious siblings. Familiar faces twisted with fear and relief all at once.

For a split second, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me—because I could have sworn my father was crying. Not because my sister was ill... but because of me.

That realization hit harder than anything else ever had.

A rush of emotions surged through my chest—guilt, warmth, something painfully unfamiliar.

I looked at my parents and siblings, and even though I had always known they loved me, seeing them like this... shaken for my sake... made something finally click.

It felt like discovering a missing piece of myself.

’Is this what having a loving family feels like?’

The night slipped by in a blur of hugs and tears. Everyone let their emotions pour out freely—everyone except Gustav, who looked like he was barely holding back from cursing the world itself.

At one point, I considered giving my parents the money I had earned that night. In the end, I decided to wait until morning.

When morning came, the Ringwood household felt... different.

Lighter.

Brighter.

For the first time in a long while, the house buzzed with energy and laughter. When I finally brought out the money, questions flew at me from every direction—but my big sisters stepped in without hesitation, vouching for me and spinning explanations for every doubt.

One gold coin.

That was all it took.

John and Elina looked like the happiest couple in the entire village. My father even decided to take the next several days off, something I had never seen him do before.

I hadn’t realized how much stress that single coin could lift.

Watching my parents smile, my siblings dance around like they had just won the lottery—especially Gustav, who stared at me with his mouth hanging open like an idiot—I suddenly wondered if I had overdone it.

For the second time since coming into this world, I truly understood something.

My family had been living an average life.

And I knew exactly why.

Still, I didn’t regret it. Not even a little.

Seeing them like this—happy instead of gloomy—was worth everything. If I were given the chance, I would do it all over again without hesitation.

With that gold coin, I was sure my family wouldn’t have to worry about hunger for a while.

Until I earned more.

Once things settled down, I finally had the freedom to focus on what mattered most—training.

My routine was simple. During the day, I sold vegetable stalks. At night, I practiced meditation and imitated every martial technique I could remember from my head back in my previous world.

Thanks to the Cursed Meditation Technique, my body and mind barely needed sleep. Even the slightest touch could wake me up.

Once I confirmed everyone was asleep, I would sneak out of the house.

In the woods, trees became my training golems.

I tested crude imitations of punches and kicks, using the rough bark to temper my still-rudimentary skills. My main goal was learning how to properly combine martial footwork with Dash.

Maybe it was because I was only four years old.

Or maybe it was the system.

Either way, my body felt far more robust than it should have been.

Whenever something moved—even slightly—my ears picked up the vibration of the air. That’s when I realized perception gave me the chance to dodge attacks before they landed.

But perception alone wasn’t enough.

I couldn’t dodge everything forever, especially in tight spaces. And while my reaction speed was fast, it wasn’t instant like some speedster from an Earth movie. Dash couldn’t be activated for every movement either.

Thinking too much during a fight would only get me killed.

Perception made my reactions quick—but not omnipotent.

What good was seeing danger coming if I couldn’t respond properly?

I wasn’t confident I could fight continuously with perception alone, especially since I couldn’t raise it to some all-sensing, omniscient level.

If I fought like I was immortal—like Deadpool—any opponent would exploit that immediately. I hadn’t even tested my regenerative abilities yet.

Healing instantly in front of others would only spell trouble.

Brute strength was just violence.

Intellect without action was meaningless.

Only when perception and body were trained together could true synergy be achieved.

A week into my training, I stood before my greatest challenge yet.

A massive tree.

Its branches stretched outward like limbs, shaped almost like a mannequin. The bark was dark brown and thick enough to withstand countless blows without showing real damage.

I took a deep breath and stepped back.

Slowly, I drew strength from my muscles, which now bulged slightly beneath my bare upper body.

For a four-year-old, my physique was absurdly defined—years of training compressed into weeks.

I lowered my right arm and leg.

My posture mirrored the martial artists I had once watched back on Earth. My back curved, muscles tense and protruding. My legs spread wide, digging into the forest floor. My hips shifted back, grounding me completely.

I exhaled.

Then clenched my fist.

The punch landed.

The tree shuddered violently—but didn’t break.

So I hit it again.

And again.

Bark chipped away. Indentations formed where my fists struck deep into the trunk. I kept punching, counting each strike, carefully recording my limits.

Eventually I stopped counting.

I had grown so used to being alone in the woods, surrounded by the vibrations of my own fists and legs, that I forgot something important.

I wasn’t alone.

After a few kicks, I froze.

Standing upright, I slowly turned my gaze toward the left side of the forest.

Something was there.

And it was watching me.
