--- Kat ---

After the guards left Kat lamented the fact she was trapped… by SOCIAL CONVENTION. You see, it was easier to escape when your captors were clearly unrepentant assholes but one of them seemed uncertain of the whole joint and the other… for all his dislike of demons wasn't even close to being evil. Made her original plan of just slowly walking out, destroying the shackles, the cells, and then any walls or people by just casually moving through them feel like kind of a dick move.

Sure this was almost a kidnapping but it's not like Kat was hurt or even properly restrained and she had to imagine that this sort of setup cost a lot of money to open, operate and maintain. Head guard might deserve some comeuppance but the others… less so. Plus, what if someone truly dangerous needed to be restrained after Kat had broken all of the chains.

She'd noticed on her way in that this place didn't have many cells and the other two were clearly made out of a different metal. Perhaps it was arrogant, but that made Kat nearly certain that she was in the strongest cell they had access to. Which meant if she broke it that would be a major cost for other people to deal with. In the end it meant breaking out with force was no longer on the table.

Another option was of course to just transform into water. Nothing would stop her and she could escape in short order and catch up to the group. The issue with that though, was if the head guard had some way to call the main garrison back in the city. Surely he did considering how nice the road was and the fact there was enchantments everyone. It was quite possible that it would cause major issues when everyone got to the city. Very much not idea.

Next plan? Wait from Thyme to come and get her. She was pretty sure that the dryad would come and pick her up if everyone else was around and mentioned WHY she wasn't there yet. But would that cause issues for Thyme? Just because the dryad was willing to help out didn't mean that Kat wanted to put Thyme in an awkward position. Especially not when she could leave any time she wanted. It's not like she lived in this dimension so if it just caused her issues that was fine. Sadly, it would probably blow back onto her team.

Hmm… this is… a lot more awkward then I thought it would be. I wonder who even bothered to go forward with all the bribery and stuff? There is also the issue of the fact I have no idea how far away we are from the town now that I think about it.

Nixilei mentioned a lot of relative times, like 'we'll be X days ahead of Y days late' but thinking back I'm all but certain she didn't mention the expected travel time at all. That makes it a lot harder to know what I can get away with. Like, if I knew I'd have enough time to just sprint there after the two days tick over I'd do that.

Though… if I'm thinking of waiting I should probably send Lily on ahead so they know not to worry me? Hmmm… should've left Lily with them but there wasn't a good chance to leave her with Nixilei and even then I have no idea what the guard would say. So… hmm. Would she rather sleep for a bit longer and have more distance to cover? Or should I wake her now so she can get moving? No, probably best to

Kat consider the problem for a bit longer as she rummaged around in her storage ring for something to pass the time. For some reason there was a harmonic in the ring. *Did Callisto put it in here or something? I don't even think I know anyone that owns one of these…* Kat shrugged to herself and slipped out of the bonds by simply transforming her arms into water. A full transformation would wake Lily after all.

Twenty minutes later Kat had completely forgotten about how working out how to escape with minimal issues and was instead getting into this harmonic practice. With her increased mental process power and speed alongside her perfect memory she was able to get a perfect playback of what she was doing wrong to fix it on the next pass. It only worked if she was playing the same song, but Piano Man had felt exceptionally appropriate.

A further thirty minutes of practice meant everything was nearly perfect and Kat was filling the entire building with her music. This prompted one of the guards to come and check on what the heck was going on… and found Kat sitting on a folding chair while playing her heart out on the harmonica.

The guard rubbed his eyes a few times trying to work out what the heck was going on. Seeing that nothing changed despite his best efforts he walked away and came back later with another guard. "Isn't she meant to be chained to the wall Bill?" asked the first guard.

"Yes Phill," agreed Bill.

"How did she get out? And where did… whatever that instrument is come from?" asked Phill.

"No idea Phill," shrugged Bill.

"Like… should we tell someone about this?" asked Phill.

"Um… not sure Phill. She's not trying to escape…" offered Bill.

"Right but she is, arguably, causing a disturbance," countered Phill.

"I dunno Phill," stated Bill. "I think this song sounds pretty nice"

"That doesn't make it not a disturbance," retorted Phill.

"Sounds like notmyjob," shrugged Bill.

"Fuck it I'm getting the captain," grumbled Phill.

"You do that you narc. I guess I'll watch the prisoner and make sure that she doesn't escape using her musical instrument or something," answered Bill as Phill left the holding areas. Shrugging at his compatriot Bill left shortly after only to return with a chair of his own.

It took about five minutes for the guard captain to show back up. "What?! How did you get out of those anti-magic cuffs?! And Bill, what are you doing just sitting around?"

Bill shrugged, "Watching the prisoner boss. Technically anyway,"

"What do I even pay you for," sighed 'Boss'.

"Technically Boss, you don't pay us the city does. If the pay ain't comin on time we've got plenty of people to mention that too after that time three guard captains were caught withholding payment and it nearly led to a city wide riot. Plus, you're technically just the captain of this little station boss," offered Bill.

"Shut up Bill," glared Boss.

Bill just shrugged and went back to listening to Kat play music. As Boss kicked the metal bars. "How do you get out of your chains?" Kat shrugged as she just kept playing. "Are you seriously going to disrespect me right now?" Kat shrugged again. "You know I could technically 'forget' to feed you for a few days,"

Kat raised an eyebrow and summoned a steaming plate of steak from her storage ring for a few moments before putting it away again. Not bothering to stop playing the harmonica when she did so. "Wait what? How did you do that? The anti-magic field in that cell should keep you from using mana at all!"

Kat rolled her eyes. *Good to have that confirmed anyway.* When she did that Boss glared at the other guard, "Bill, why don't you go in there so we can test if the enchantments are on?"

"Well boss, technically I can't open the doors right now because the prisoner is improperly secured," offered Bill. Boss glared at his subordinate. "Sorry boss but I don't make the rules,"

"Right, but I CAN fire you for being a smartass. Now, do you want to get in their and figure out what the problem is or do you want me to arrest you and throw you into the cell next to the demon for obstructing containment procedures?" Boss offered.

Bill sighed, "Why did I admit to being an unpractised mage on my enlistment forms. 'Oh you can get mage training on the job' they said. 'The guard will happily teach you spells for your affinity' they said. Fucking whatever," Bill waited for the Boss to unlock the door and then walked in once the cell was open.

Once the door was closed Boss asked, "So can you cast?"

"Nope," answered Bill.

"Fuck it, fine you can stay there while I go check the runes…" grumbled the Boss as he stormed off.

"Sorry about this," shrugged Bill as he sat down in the corner. "Though… out of curiosity how come you're fine anyway? Promise I won't tell the boss,"

Kat finally paused her harmonica playing. "Demons don't even use mana,"

Bill burst into laughter as Kat quickly went back to playing to cover it up. Poor Bill was struggling to breath and the slaps on the stone were probably not doing good things to his unarmoured hand.
