Daily Life in the 70s-Chapter 247 Concern
Chapter 247: Chapter 247 Concern
Yang PeiMin became obsessed with cleanliness again, her idiosyncratic ailment flaring up once more.
Fortunately, when she arrived, she had brought with her soap and other cleaning supplies. She wiped down her bed inside and out almost ten times, pasted paper on the walls, went downstairs to fetch two bamboo poles to hang up her mosquito net, and then drew three lines to hang a piece of cloth outside the three sides of her bed that faced the wall for the sake of privacy.
Her roommates watched, dumbfounded.
Feng Erxi couldn’t help saying, "Pei Min, you’re a bit too particular."
Yang PeiMin replied, "Didn’t I mention earlier that I tend to toss and turn in my sleep? If you catch a glimpse later, please be understanding."
Except for Liu Yilan, Feng Erxi and the others laughed, "How bad can it be that you have to hide it so tightly?"
Yang PeiMin just smiled without saying anything.
Then she threw her things onto the bed, marking the end of that phase. She would deal with making the bed and the rest tomorrow when she came over.
"I still have some things I haven’t moved over, so I’ll head back now and come back tomorrow," Yang PeiMin told her roommates.
"Are you a local?"
"No, my spouse works here."
"Oh, I see. Well, you head back then. I’ll keep an eye on your stuff for you," said Feng Erxi.
"Thank you."
She wasn’t worried about theft; people were simple and honest those days, and the consequences for being caught stealing were very severe.
When she left the school gates, she found that the sun was almost setting. Luckily, a bus arrived just then, and she hurriedly boarded it. Otherwise, waiting for the next one would mean waiting until it was dark, and her man at home would be worried.
By the time she returned to the hospital, it was nearly seven o’clock, and the sky had already darkened, the streetlights of the hospital glowing warm and yellow.
Yang PeiMin quickened her pace, wondering whether Shen Yiguang had had dinner yet.
As she passed by the lawn of the inpatient department, she saw Shen Yiguang wearing a neat military uniform, taking large strides. Perhaps because he hadn’t fully recovered, his steps looked hurried but slow, and Nurse Ding was chasing after him, calling out, "Mr. Shen, Mr. Shen, you shouldn’t be out of bed yet..."
Shen Yiguang had already seen Yang PeiMin and quickened his pace even more. Yang PeiMin became very anxious and ran over, "Why did you come down..."
Before she could finish her sentence, she was pulled into Shen Yiguang’s embrace, as if affirming her real presence, then, considering the setting, he quickly lifted her out of his arms, looking at her with a heavy gaze, "Why are you only getting back now?"
Shame flashed across Yang PeiMin’s face, "I’m sorry, I was tidying up the dorm and lost track of time." He had come out to look for her because she hadn’t returned for such a long time. She quickly helped him, "Let’s go back to the room first. You can’t stay standing for long."
Nurse Ding promptly caught up from behind and looked at Yang Peimin with reproof writ large on her face, "Mrs. Shen, where have you been? You’ve been gone all day and out of sight. Look at yourself, is this how a wife should act? Mr. Shen was left all alone without anyone by his side, not even worrying if he had eaten or not. You really took off without a care." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
Shen Yiguang glanced at her indifferently, "I don’t need you to watch over me here, I’m fine. We’re getting ready to go eat."
Nurse Ding still seemed unwilling to let it go, about to say something more when the look in Shen Yiguang’s eyes turned cold. She paused, feeling somewhat embarrassed, and threw out a comment before leaving, "Just don’t overexert yourself..."
Yang Peimin watched them, somewhat baffled by their exchange.
Shen Yiguang had already taken her by the hand and was leading her towards the ward.
She gathered her thoughts, "Why have you come down? Even if it was urgent, couldn’t you send someone to check on me? Have you eaten? Did you take your medicine properly today?"
Shen Yiguang gently patted her head, "You little ingrate, how long have you been gone? Is it only now you remember to worry if I’ve eaten properly? Why didn’t you think of this while you were outside? Couldn’t you have come back earlier? It’s dangerous for a girl to be out after dark, don’t think just because the folks here are simple that there aren’t any bad people around."
Yang Peimin nodded as if being chastised. Indeed, especially in the late seventies and early eighties, she hurriedly agreed, with an excellent attitude of acknowledgment, "I know, I will be more careful next time. Considering my good attitude recognizing my mistake, you should eat an extra bowl of rice later, okay?"
Shen Yiguang smiled and playfully flicked her nose, "Clever girl."
Yang Peimin was truly concerned about his health; he was still not fully recovered. The previous talk of just being grazed by a bullet was a complete lie to her—it had hit him squarely. She was very afraid of any complications that might arise and today, she didn’t want him to go looking for her on his own because she had returned a bit late.
"You sit here and wait for me for a minute. I’ll go up and get you a wheelchair, and have someone carry you up."
She was about to leave when Shen Yiguang stopped her, "No need, I’m alright now, the doctor said I can try to walk on my own, slowly is fine. It’s the final phase of recovery, walking a bit is actually good, helps with the healing."
Yang Peimin couldn’t argue with him and could only help support one side of him, letting him shift some of his weight onto her as they walked slowly.
Shen Yiguang laughed, "You little thing, you can’t handle it. But don’t worry, I’m fine."
The two made their way upstairs slowly. When they returned to the ward, Yang Peimin was about to head out to get food when Shen Yiguang stopped her, "No need to go, I’ve already had someone bring food back. It’s in the thermal box; sit down and eat. There’s fried fish inside, which you like."
Yang Peimin exaggeratedly sniffed, "No wonder I smelled food as soon as I came in. It was already brought back, that’s great, I’m starving."
While eating, she mentioned Gao Hong, who she ran into at the mall, "I bumped into Gao Hong there, I don’t know what she was up to, acting all secretive." Though she said this, she wasn’t curious at all; she felt it was none of her business as long as it didn’t affect her.
Shen Yiguang wasn’t interested either, so Yang Peimin started talking about her roommates, "The other three are fine, all easy to get along with."
Shen Yiguang really liked her talking this way, rambling on. He got to know about the life she was leading without him, and was comforted seeing her still so vibrant and lively. While he regretted not being able to be by her side all the time, knowing about her life through her chatter made him feel at ease.
"I bought some bedding and other household and toiletry items today, but I couldn’t carry everything at once. I’ll pick up the rest tomorrow and move my stuff over, then come back. I’ll rush over again for my morning classes so I won’t be late." She was still not at ease with Shen Yiguang being by himself.
Shen Yiguang shook his head, "Silly girl, I’m almost fine now, can take care of my basic needs, no need for anyone to wait on me. You move in tomorrow, don’t be late to your first class in the morning."
