Daily Life in the 70s-Chapter 28 - Handling
Chapter 28: Chapter 28 Handling
Arriving at the car, a new problem arose: how could she possibly get in like this?
Her military overcoat—how could she bear to dirty someone else's seat?
Shen Yiguang picked up on her dilemma and pulled out a towel to place on the car seat, his movements naturally flushing Yang PeiMin's cheeks. She turned her face away, but Shen Yiguang was already reaching out to help her into the car.
She endured her discomfort and allowed him to help her up.
Once seated in the car, Zhang Minghua managed to find an opportunity to ask a burning question.
"When did you two start dating?" Her daughter had even let Shen Yiguang know about such private matters; this development was way too fast for Zhang Minghua to process, so her question had a hint of interrogation.
Yang PeiMin was sitting next to her in the backseat, now leaning against Zhang Minghua and still visibly upset. She straightened herself up and moved away, looking half-dead.
Seeing her like this, Zhang Minghua was also holding back frustration, itching to grab her by the head and demand, weren't you just adamantly refusing the other day? What about that resolute expression of not wanting to date anyone? Where did that go?
Shen Yiguang explained what had happened earlier and concluded with seriousness, "I took responsibility for this matter when I came across it, and I am willing to take responsibility. Aunt, please rest assured, I will treat PeiMin well."
At this point, Yang PeiMin forced herself to come back to life, finally realizing what Shen Yiguang meant by "taking responsibility." It was all because he had seen the blood! How could one be so innocent? She quickly said to Shen Yiguang, "This is really nothing. You don't need to be responsible for me. Just forget it afterward; I won't dwell on it. But still, thank you."
Zhang Minghua gave her a disapproving look. "What kind of thing is a girl saying? Had it not been for me covering for you, others might think you're one of those disreputable girls. Should such matters be known to outsiders? You've been spoiled by your father and me." She emphasized the last sentence.
"Auntie, don't be angry. PeiMin is young and straightforward, which is charming. No strangers are here, no harm was done," Shen Yiguang justified.
But his attitude of rolling with the punches made Yang PeiMin itch with irritation, even surprising Zhang Minghua somewhat.
Zhang Minghua paused, "Shen family's boy, you saved Minmin's life, and we haven't had the chance to repay you, and now you've helped her again. We are truly grateful! But marriage is not a trifling matter. I am happy to see your sense of responsibility, but as her mother, I must ask, do you really wish to marry our Minmin merely out of a sense of duty?"
Yang PeiMin perked up her ears, waiting for Shen Yiguang's response. If it was just out of responsibility, then it would be easy to dismiss the idea.
Shen Yiguang's voice was calm and magnetic, able to convey his earnestness directly, "PeiMin's straightforwardness is endearing, and she is quite cherished. I hope Aunt can see my sincerity. I will ask my mother to start preparations when I return, and in a couple of days, I will come to your home to propose."
How thick-skinned! And presumptuous! Had her mother agreed? Temporarily forgetting his status as her benefactor, Yang PeiMin glowered at his straight back driving the car.
"Mom!" Zhang Pei Min did not agree and looked at Zhang Minghua for support.
"Okay, I will discuss it with PeiMin's father when we get back." Although Zhang Minghua didn't confirm anything, her tone softened.

Yang PeiMin panicked, "Mom! I don't agree!"
Shen Yiguang stopped the car. Had they arrived at the health clinic?
He got out of the car first, went to Yang PeiMin's door, and opened it for her, "Be careful, don't touch anything with that hand. Give me your other hand."
Zhang Minghua also urged her.
However, both Shen Yiguang and Zhang Minghua chose to selectively ignore her disagreement from just before.
Yang PeiMin's temper flared up, and she pushed away the hand he extended, "I can do it myself."
"Be good, don't be stubborn." Shen Yiguang whispered soothingly and extended his long arm to directly lift her down.
Before Yang PeiMin had the chance to get angry, out of the corner of her eye, she saw Shen Yiguang swiftly fold the blood-stained towel she had just sat on without a change in his expression, wrap it in oil paper, and place it under the car seat, then he allowed an astonished Zhang Minghua to get out of the car.
Her face, oh her old face, could not help but turn red again...
No longer able to get angry...
"What, is this the Department Store?" Zhang Minghua exclaimed, having been so caught up in their conversation that she hadn't noticed Shen Yiguang had driven them into the county, which was only a half-hour's drive from the town - it seemed rather fast.
"First let Pei Min change." Shen Yiguang made his intention very clear, handing over the money he had prepared earlier to Zhang Minghua, "I'll accompany her to look for pants, and I'll need your help to buy her some sanitary products."
Zhang Minghua only took the money, she herself had rushed out without bringing any, and she looked at Shen Yiguang with some satisfaction, nodding and saying, "You really think of everything, okay, I'll go do that and give you back your money later." After these words, she hurriedly went inside, without questioning Shen Yiguang's unexpected and well-informed suggestion about sanitary products.
Upon hearing that they were buying pants, Yang PeiMin's heart finally settled a bit. She felt quite uncomfortable now, probably because it was the first day and the flow was somewhat heavy. She was somewhat regretful now - why make such a fuss? She should have borrowed what was needed and cleaned herself up before coming here!
Shen Yiguang looked at Yang PeiMin standing still, puzzled, "What's wrong? Does your hand still hurt?"
Yang PeiMin coughed lightly, her face slightly flushed, "I'd rather not go up. I'll wait for you in the car."
"What exactly is it? Speak." Shen Yiguang insisted, his tone leaving no room for objection.
Her face grew warmer, and she turned her face away slightly, "My stomach doesn't feel good."
"Let's go to the guesthouse, I'll get a room for you to rest, and later you can change your pants," Shen Yiguang suggested, buttoning up the military coat she was wearing and paused before asking, "Should I carry you over?"
Yang PeiMin accepted his earlier proposition but refused to be carried, "I can walk."
Shen Yiguang accompanied her across the street; not far on the opposite side was a guesthouse. He took out his military ID to book a room.
"Stay here for a while, I'll buy you pants, and be back soon. There's hot water here, call someone if you need to, okay?"
"Got it, go ahead." Yang PeiMin didn't dare to sit down, leaning against the wall she peeked out half her face and reluctantly responded.
Shen Yiguang couldn't help but touch the top of her head.
"I'm off."
Yang PeiMin glared at his retreating figure, the situation seemed to spiral out of control the moment her 'relative' arrived.
