Dashing Student-Chapter 1277: Descending Into Madness
Chen Nan was startled by his thoughts.
The Righteous Alliance and the Demon Sect have been fighting and competing for years, but these conflicts were relatively minor; if they were to fight over an island, not many cultivators would be involved.
On one hand, they don’t want significant losses; as long as the growth rate of the cultivators matches the casualty rate, it’s acceptable. On the other hand, they’ve been simultaneously competing for numerous resource-rich areas, making the cultivators insufficient to cover them all.
Moreover, both sides are always very restrained, never deploying Nascent Soul Realm cultivators, and always controlling casualties to an acceptable level, unwilling to fight to the death with each other.
Ultimately, their final goal is just to obtain resources, not to decide life and death.
However, Chen Nan realized the island he was on was filled with danger, seemingly a conspiracy specifically targeting Demon Sect demon cultivators, and besides the Righteous Alliance, no one else would do this.
With thousands of demon cultivators dying at once, even the Demon Sect would find it highly painful and tremendously enraging, leaving the outcome unbearable to consider for Chen Nan.
By then, too many cultivators would have died.
Suddenly, Chen Nan’s attention fell on a seemingly insignificant wildflower on the ground, resembling a dandelion, which released a faint powder whenever the wind blew.
However, the King of Ten Thousand Gu is very sensitive to poison, thus confirming that the poison in Chen Nan’s body was caused by such an inconspicuous wildflower.
And such wildflowers were everywhere on this island!
"Were they naturally growing on the island, or did someone plant them deliberately? What effects does this poison have?"
Chen Nan’s heart was filled with countless questions, yet no one was there to answer them.
Knowing this island harbors danger, Chen Nan’s first thought was to leave, yet he worried about being discovered, while curiosity about what might happen compelled him to stay.
The island is rich in resources, and no matter what happens, he could still gather some before leaving. Poverty left him with no choice.
The night passed quickly, and nothing happened on the island, seemingly a worry for Chen Nan alone, yet the alertness in his heart did not dissipate.
He even placed the King of Ten Thousand Gu on his shoulder to guard against unexpected situations.
Many demon cultivators raise snakes, spiders, and centipedes, so the King of Ten Thousand Gu wouldn’t attract any attention, making him blend more into the demon cultivators.
Early in the morning, Elder Mu Yin gathered all the cultivators together.
"Golden Core Realm cultivators go first, hunt demon beasts on the island, Foundation Establishment Realm cultivators follow to clean up; you must submit thirty percent of the resources to the Demon Sect, and keep the rest."
"Now, let’s flatten this island!"
The demon cultivators cheered excitedly, even Chen Nan noticed a demon cultivator beside him whose eyes were turning red, as if on the brink of accomplishing something great.
Then they rushed into the jungle, entering plunder mode.
Chen Nan was no exception, for if he didn’t seize, demon cultivators would take it from him; he might as well take it.
Not long after entering, Chen Nan encountered a tiger-shaped demon beast that had just reached the Golden Core Realm, and he slapped it to death.
Nearby, he found a Seventh Grade Spiritual Medicine, which he pocketed.
True to his expectations, this island untouched by cultivators was full of treasures, and Chen Nan was growing increasingly excited.
...
Unknowingly, Chen Nan had been pillaging the island for three days, collecting a large number of spiritual medicines, and even found a Green Cloud Stone, a Sixth Grade Refining Material, from a demon beast’s lair.
These gains made him increasingly excited; even though his eyes were bloodshot, he still refused to rest.
At this moment, the King of Ten Thousand Gu gently bit Chen Nan’s shoulder, helping him absorb the toxin from his body, restoring his mind to clarity instantly.
Reflecting on his actions over the past three days and noticing those toxin-containing wildflowers throughout the jungle, he felt a deep sense of fear.
"Could this poison drive people insane?"
Chen Nan had some guesses, quickly taking a seat to rest; in the past three days, he had been relentlessly killing demon beasts without a moment of respite, already exhausted physically and mentally.
Yet because of the poison, he couldn’t feel it, only becoming deeply fatigued after the snake absorbed the toxin.
Presumably, other demon cultivators were experiencing the same.
After recovering for two hours, Chen Nan regained his spirit; after walking a little further, he heard the sound of clashes, like people battling.
With a thought, he stealthily hid his form, quickly approaching to find two demon cultivators engaged in combat, with a Seventh Grade Spiritual Medicine on the ground nearby.
Typically, mere Seventh Grade Spiritual Medicine wouldn’t cause two Golden Core Realm cultivators to fight; there were so many undiscovered medicines in the jungle.
Yet these two demon cultivators were fighting desperately, each covered in wounds but refusing to stop, their eyes turning bloodshot, filled with madness.
"I get it, the wildflower’s poison drives people insane, leading to internal strife between cultivators!" A sudden flash of spiritual light crossed Chen Nan’s mind.
However, he didn’t intervene, instead waiting for the battle between the two demon cultivators to end.
As expected, the two demon cultivators ultimately perished together, collapsing to the ground. But before Chen Nan could scavenge from them, a figure emerged from the bushes opposite him.
The person wore a white robe, notably with a Righteous Alliance token hanging from his waist, clearly identifying him as a Righteous Alliance cultivator.
"Ha, idiots, poisoned without realizing, dying for nothing."
Chen Nan rejoiced, unexpectedly encountering a Righteous Alliance cultivator here; it seems this island was indeed a trap laid by the Righteous Alliance for demon cultivators.
The suddenly appearing Righteous Alliance cultivator collected the fallen spiritual artifact to finish off the two demon cultivators before preparing to leave, prompting Chen Nan to jump out.
"Oh? Another one slipped through." The person looked at Chen Nan, sneering.
Chen Nan hurriedly gestured, ignoring his attitude, after all, as long as there was a Righteous Alliance cultivator present, he might escape from Xiao Lie’s pursuit.
"Don’t misunderstand, I am also a Righteous Alliance cultivator." Chen Nan took out his token, concealing his Blood Evil Qi, his aura aligning completely with the token’s.
Yet the person kept laughing: "Righteous Alliance cultivator? Great, I’ll kill you to avoid trouble!"
Chen Nan’s pupils shrank abruptly, this tone hardly resembling the Righteous Alliance; could it be a demon sect cultivator doing the dirty?
But suddenly, a flash of spiritual light crossed his mind, recalling besides the Demon Sect and the Righteous Alliance, there’s a third force in the Endless Sea.
Demon Clan!
