Chapter 44 - Left Behind, Training with Trunks
Trunks was momentarily stunned by Cado's words.
"...You're not staying a few more days?" he asked softly.
Truth be told, Trunks felt a bit reluctant.
After spending the past several days together, without realizing it, he had started to see Cado as family.
So hearing he was leaving now... left a hollow ache in his heart.
"I've already stayed longer than I planned." Cado replied with a calm smile.
"There are things back in my world I still need to take care of."
"And the sooner I return, the sooner I can get ready for them."
"...Yeah. That makes sense..." Trunks nodded lightly.
He knew it too — Cado couldn't stay here forever.
"Alright, then let's head back. I'll have Mom prep the time machine."
Trunks smiled, trying not to show the disappointment in his eyes.
As they walked through the street together, the two of them chatted casually, as if nothing had changed.
Before long, they arrived at Trunks' new home.
Inside, Bulma was at her desk, furiously typing away on her keyboard, her desk cluttered with blueprints and plans.
Most of them were detailed schematics for rebuilding infrastructure.
Being the only remaining top-tier scientist on Earth, Bulma had more than enough work on her hands.
"Mom! We're back!" Trunks called out.
He and Cado pushed the door open and walked in.
"Oh, Trunks. You two sit down first — I'll be with you in a second..." Bulma responded without even turning around, her eyes glued to the screen.
Her entire focus was absorbed by her work.
"Mom, it's like this... Cado says he's leaving soon."
The clacking of the keyboard stopped immediately.
Bulma stood up and turned to face Cado.
"What's the rush? Can't you stay just a little longer?"
She smiled as she spoke, but there was a clear trace of reluctance in her voice.
"I've been here long enough." Cado replied, shaking his head slightly.
"It's time I went back."
His tone was casual, but inside, a wave of homesickness had begun to stir — especially seeing Bulma like this.
It reminded him of someone he hadn't seen in a long time.
He wondered how his Bulma was doing now...
Bulma could tell Cado was eager to return.
But then she spoke up — and her next words made his heart sink.
"Sorry, Cado... even if you want to go back, you might not be able to."
"...What do you mean?" he asked, frowning.
Bulma sighed softly. "The time machine's fuel is almost gone."
"If you try to use it now, there's no guarantee you'll return to your original timeline."
Cado froze.
That... wasn't something he expected.
"Can't you just refuel it?"
He remembered reading somewhere that the machine's energy source could be replenished.
"Yes, but it's not easy..." Bulma said, adjusting her glasses.
"That type of fuel is extremely rare. Even processing it will take seven to eight months — minimum."
"Seven... eight months?" Cado's voice cracked in disbelief.
'That long?!'
"I'm afraid so." Bulma said apologetically.
"Which means you'll have to stay in this timeline a bit longer."
"But I promise — I'll do everything I can to get the fuel ready as soon as possible."
She meant every word. The moment Trunks returned from the future, she had already started checking the machine, and that's when she discovered the fuel issue.
Ever since then, she'd been juggling her work while trying to solve it.
"...Alright. Guess I've got no choice..." Cado said with a sigh.
He knew that no matter how much he wanted to leave, there was no rushing science.
All he could do was wait — and hope nothing bad happened back in his world during his absence.
"I'll work as fast as I can." Bulma reassured him.
She paused her current project and immediately shifted her full attention to producing the necessary fuel.
"Looks like you'll be staying with us a little longer." Trunks said, clearly trying to hide his grin.
Not out of malice — he was genuinely glad.
"Yeah, yeah..." Cado raised an eyebrow with a wry smile. "What can I do?"
At this point, all he could do was pray the fuel would be ready sooner than expected.
-----
Days passed by quickly.
Before he knew it, nearly six months had gone by.
Cado had slowly gotten used to life in this world.
Seeing people rebuilding and recovering brought him a strange sense of peace.
"Cado, training again today?" Trunks asked, stepping into the courtyard where Cado was warming up.
"Of course." Cado said firmly.
"Staying strong is the only way to face unexpected danger."
He hadn't spent these six months slacking off.
Instead of waiting idly, he poured himself into training.
At first, Trunks had wanted to take it easy — but seeing how seriously Cado trained, he couldn't help but join in.
Their daily sparring pushed both of them forward, each fight making them stronger.
"Alright!" Trunks grinned, his fighting spirit ignited.
The constant duels with Cado had pushed him to the edge of a breakthrough — he could feel it.
He was approaching the ceiling of a Super Saiyan.
But before he could fully focus, Cado had already rushed in with a flurry of attacks.
"Not waiting, huh?" Trunks smirked, quickly transforming into Super Saiyan and meeting Cado head-on.
Their figures blurred as they clashed midair.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The skies echoed with thunderous crashes, shaking the earth beneath them.
"Not bad, Trunks! You're improving!" Cado laughed as they traded blows — though he didn't hold back at all.
"You're one to talk!" Trunks shot back, gritting his teeth.
He knew Cado was still fighting in base form.
No Super Saiyan. No Kaio-Ken. Just raw, physical power.
In the beginning, Trunks had easily overwhelmed him.
But Cado's strength was growing every day.
Now, they were evenly matched — if not tilted slightly in Cado's favor.
Their fight raged from dawn till dusk.
BOOM!
After another round of fierce collisions, both fighters pushed apart with explosive force.
"I'm done! That's enough!" Trunks huffed, waving a hand as he backed off.
"Cado, your talent is seriously terrifying..."
"You can overpower me without going Super Saiyan...!"
He shook his head, still catching his breath.
He couldn't understand it.

He'd trained his whole life — yet Cado, in just half a year, had caught up using pure, natural talent.
Compared to him, Trunks felt like a turtle trying to chase lightning.
