Chapter 74: Suffering At His Expense

Luther pressed his palms to his ears, blocking out the sound of the other inmates in their cells, and the wardens making the rounds. It had been over three days now, and neither Cassie nor his wife had seen him.

Talk less of Ethan. He had asked to make a phone call, and called his son in-law, but Ethan did not answer any of the calls. He tried to contact Cassie, but the girl never took his calls. And when Serena answered, the line suddenly went dead.

"What is happening here? Why is no one taking me out of prison? Is this some sort of joke?" He panicked, wondering why he was still very much behind bars.

The warden had announced that he would soon be moved out of his private cell. A thought that scared Luther out of his mind. He glared at the prison food in front of him, an insult to the expensive dishes he was used to having.

"Ethan, hurry the hell up and get me out of this mess!" He gritted his teeth, wondering what was taking Ethan so long to do anything.

Wasn’t he going to help him out?

The thought of Ethan abandoning him in prison rested at the back of his mind, but he violently pushed it away.

The image of Sadie’s grinning face popped in his head, "That bitch! She dared to try this? I’ll fucking end her once I get out of here!" He announced to himself fuming with rage.

Jen pushed forward the long black wig she had started wearing since the past week. It cascaded her neck, down to her mid back, and she always had it over her shoulders.

And it was not just her hair, she changed her entire wardrobe into boots, turtle necks and long maxi skirts or strictly black pants.

Some of her coworkers had asked her about the drastic change in aesthetic, but she would brush the question off with a smile.

"Jen, where are we on sealing the deal with company F?" Ethan asked casually, keeping his gaze on his computer, whilst she read him his schedule.

"We are yet to hear back from them sir." She responded, keeping a four feet distance from his desk. Her eyes pointed at the pen holder, which had fewer pens in it than the start of the day.

"What? It’s been a week already! You said they were pleased with my proposal in their feedback. So why haven’t they agreed to the deal?" His tone hardened slightly and his eyes were no longer following the documents on the screen.

Jen gulped, her foot reflexively took a step back, "S-Sir I heard they were sent various proposals, so they’re still in the reviewing stage-"

"You idiot!" He reached for a pen from the holder and threw it at her face not caring where it landed! Jen who knew better than to dodge and rile him up, clenched her muscles and took the attack. "You should’ve told me that from the start!" he raised his voice, and balled his fists.

"I’m sorry sir!" she apologized bowing her head, even though she had already told him that right from the beginning. Their rival company which Damien belonged to were also vying for the client, but Ethan was too fixated on his divorce to focus on work lately.

"Why is everyone around me so damn useless!" He hissed, running his frantic fingers through his hair, getting restless. It was a huge deal, and it should have been a done deal.

His company was the most prominent in the city, so how dare the client look at other proposals? Just who could measure up to his company?

"Get me the names of all the companies that sent proposals. I want to know the bastards who think they can get one over me." He ordered.

She nodded, then quickly rushed out to make the investigation.

Once she was gone, his phone rang, he picked it up and saw it was Serena calling. He regretted giving the woman his number and resolved to block her.

"Son-in-law! Please, help my husband. I don’t know what Cassie is thinking, but it’s been three days-" she cried over the phone just to get cut off by Luther.

"You’re really not smart are you? Even your daughter knows not to call me anymore. I’ve told you already, your husband is not my problem." Ethan harshly reminded her.

"Is it Brooke? Don’t worry, she’s just acting out, I swear I’ll set her straight, even if I have to break her other leg!" Serena announced.

Ethan bit back a grin, "The next time you call me, I’ll have you suffer for it, remember that." He spat out then ended the call.

"Stupid bitch." He hissed, "I’ll make you all realize just how indispensable I am." He grinned from ear to ear.

In truth, Ethan planned to help Luther get out of jail, he had invested far too much into his agency and his family not to. But after Brooke humiliated him with the divorce, he figured he’d make the family suffer for a while.

To remind them of his importance to them, in a bid to make them get his wife back even faster. He also wanted to establish a power dynamic, so Cassie would never talk back to him.

Plus, he was angry about the bag that she accepted from the Grayson heir and was reminding her of his place in her life.

"Haa." He sighed, relishing the feeling of satisfaction he was getting out of seeing both women suffer at his expense.

"I’ll give it another three days, make it a week before I let the bastard go." He thought aloud, grinning from ear to ear.

To Ethan, he was the only light at the end of the tunnel in the situation. He would make Luther suffer then act as his savior. After all, it wasn’t like anyone else would lift a finger to help someone like Luther.
