Chapter 79: An Outrageous Challenge At The Audition

Brooke followed the staff member into the hotel where the audition was being held. Since it was meant to be discreet, there were no more than three other women invited, three women she didn’t recognize from the former audition.

"Pick up the pace!" The staff scolded, as she opened the door to the hall where the audition was being carried out.

Brooke could hear her heart beating, she was nervous but not because of the audition.

She stepped into the hall, to be welcomed by five people, seated in a half moon shaped table, holding a clipboard in hand, with a copy of the script placed next to each of them.

’Isn’t that...’ Brooke raised a brow when she noticed President Lucas, the center of the gossip surrounding Sadie, who was no where to be found.

"Miss Brooke, you’ve certainly paved a name for yourself in such a short time. Even if you aren’t cast for this role, you’ve already made yourself a household name." The casting director spat out, folding his arms across his chest.

He zoned his gaze on Brooke’s empty hands and frowned, "You didn’t even come with the script prepared. Just what do you take this for?"

His observations gauged the interest of the others.

-"What? Does this woman take us for fools?"

-"We might not be a big agency, but this is too much."

"Why the hell do we have to even audition her?"

The judges whispered loudly amongst themselves, their words threw Brooke off her game, as she just realized she didn’t bring the script with her out of the car.

"I’m sorry for wasting your time." She apologized, I forgot the script outside, please give me a moment to get it-"

"Are you serious?!" The casting director pointed at her, "Do you think we have nothing better to do? Our entire production has been placed on hold because of the stunt you pulled." He spat angrily at her.

Another judge inserted. "There are far more talented people outside vying for this role. Why the hell should we waste our time with you? Good grief! How do you forget to bring the script?"

Brooke bowed her head, afraid to meet their agonizing gaze. Her body was present, but her mind was with Thane, she wanted to see him, to know how he was doing. But she knew that seeing him now, would only ruin all of their efforts, hence, she raised her head.

"I understand-"

The casting director cut her off, "Clearly you don’t. Let me just spell this out for you, this audition, is just a joke. If it wasn’t for you knowing one of the main sponsors-"

Lucas intervened, "That’s enough out of you!" He turned to the rest at the table. "Out of all of you. I invited you here to be objective, and not to make such a fuss."

"But president Lucas this woman will ruin the film-"

"That’s something we can only know after she’s auditioned. Like you’ve all said, there are other people waiting outside, we can always choose another actress for the job. There is no need to bully anyone." He spat out, placing a lid on the interrogation.

Brooke was stunned by the way everyone who was taking jabs at her suddenly mellowed down. Taking this chance she cleared her throat, drawing his attention.

"Please sir, let me audition." She begged, addressing him.

"Oh, I plan to. After all, just like he stated, you were given this second chance, because of your connection to our sponsor." He truthfully told her.

"But, I’m not going to let this movie go to ruin. So I won’t turn a blind eye to everything my colleagues have said." He sat up straight, resting his fists on the table, his eyes trained on the Brooke, particularly her slightly crooked standing posture.

"Which means, that if you so much as take a single step out of this room, you forfeit the audition." He announced.

Brooke turned pale. "You mean I should audition without the script?"

"Yes. You are an actor after all? This much shouldn’t be hard. Lucas said, earning approving looks from the rest of the judges.

Staring at her worried face he thought, ’Truth be told, she doesn’t have a presence about her. She’s too timid to play a female lead, she wouldn’t even be qualified to be a supporting role.’

’And what’s more, tensions arising from casting will definitely place a damper on the team’s morale. After all, no one wants to work with a liability, and just with one look I can tell this woman will drag this team down.’ he sighed to himself, already tired of the drama unfolding.

’That being said, I can’t ignore the sponsor either, or we would have no movie. So at least, I need to think up a fair way to get this woman out of my movie, maybe I’ll compensate her with an extra’s role...’ in the middle of his thoughts, Brooke’s response cut him off.

Brooke heaved a sigh, and caught his gaze, "Alright, I agree."

"Good, let’s begin-"

The director, who had been silent the entire time piped up, "I’ll only agree to let her audition if I pick the scene I want her to reenact."

Lucas forced a smile. "Director that’s a bit of overkill don’t you think? Let’s be a bit considerate of her..."

But the older man was adamant, "Anyone can memorize a few easy lines. To really test her, we should do it this way. At least, if she really is the real deal, her acting will shut us all up." He frowned, "Though I doubt she is." He grumbled under his breath.

The president who could smell trouble braced himself when he turned to Brooke, "As you can see our director is very adamant about this. So I’ll make you an offer instead to lift your spirits. There’s an opening for a supporting role, it’s minor but leaves a good impression. You won’t need to audition for it but practice is a-"

"I’ll do it." Brooke declared.

Lucas smiled, glad that she was reasonable. "Good. You can leave and have the lady outside show you to the script writer-" he was saying, but Brooke cut him off.

"That’s not it. I meant, I accept the condition. I’ll audition whatever part you ask me, without the script." She boldly declared, leaving everyone in the room shook.
