Chapter 102: Chapter 102: Return to the Cabin

About Danielle, there surely was more to the story, but Roger had no desire to delve further.

Just when he returned to the temporary lodging, the police had located Amelie’s adoption records from a few years ago.

She had been taken away and renamed Danielle.

The performance at the school was still going on, but Roger had absolutely no intention of participating; he called Henrik to give a rundown of what had happened.

Then, he made an excuse for Henrik to handle the follow-up matters and drove back to Baytown alone.

He was somewhat impatient now.

...

The spoils from the Water Ghosts and that eerie wooden doll, especially the latter, clearly had considerable value.

If he was lucky enough, these two items might even upgrade his cabin to another level!

“Damn it, I pay you to complete tasks, and now you want me to wipe your ass?”

Henrik’s voice was full of complaints on the phone.

Roger chuckled, “In this mission, I met a girl, and she shares a common interest with you.”

“Maybe someday I can introduce you two.”

Roger was looking forward to the scene of Henrik and Danielle together.

Click, click, Henrik might even retire early because of it.

Henrik snorted, “You keep her to yourself…”

“And, submit your mission report as soon as possible.”

Henrik added finally, then hung up the call.

“The mission is completed, he dealt with that monster.”

Henrik approached an old lady with graying hair who looked to be in her mid-fifties, with well-maintained skin and gold-rimmed glasses on her face.

Efficient with a touch of warmth.

“What about the girl?”

The old lady asked.

“What girl?”

Henrik asked, looking puzzled.

“Heh-heh.”

“Lying in front of a Dream Diviner, Henrik, you really have guts.”

“And no brains!”

Henrik laughed awkwardly, “Now that you mention it, I just remembered, I forgot to ask earlier. I’ll ask him later; maybe he’ll include it in the report.”

Seeing the mockery on the old woman’s face, Henrik wisely shut his mouth.

“This at least shows that he’s not like those other guys, that he’s someone with compassion…”

“Like yourself?” the old woman interrupted.

“Heh-heh.”

Pride flickered across Henrik’s face.

“You actually thought I was complimenting you?”

The old woman looked incredulous, waving her hand irritably, “Barely passing, let it be this time.”

“But not again!”

After she spoke, she tossed a file on the table, “This is your assignment. Investigate thoroughly; there can’t be any slip-ups.”

Henrik’s expression turned serious as he picked up the file and left.

After Henrik left, the old woman made a phone call, waited a moment, “Withdraw your people, there’s no need to fuss over the girl anymore, let the matter rest.”

“Yes.”

Henrik returned to his car in high spirits, “My judgment is as exceptional as ever!”

“I certainly didn’t choose wrong.”

He lit a cigarette and slightly furrowed his brow, “Having the insight to know that only the combat strength of a female Night Demon could match mine.”

After he had finished speaking, he turned his head abruptly, his expression darkening. “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and drive!”

“We’ve just taken on a big task!”

“Okay, Mr. Henrik,”

A young man with a wooden expression started the car.

“Mr. Henrik, please refrain from smoking in the car.”

“Also, please buckle up your seatbelt!”

Henrik extinguished the cigarette in his hand and slumped into his seat with a look of utter despondence.

“Once the probation period is over, I will definitely apply to have you replaced!!”

He swore venomously.

……

By the time Roger returned to Baytown, it was almost evening. At this time, it was not convenient for him to appear before acquaintances, so he parked the car and quietly made his way to the cabin in the woods.

As soon as he entered the cabin, he couldn’t wait to show off the two new trophies he had acquired.

Water Ghosts’ Fins: A combination of mutated evil spirits and rotting corpses, a bizarre creature bred between life and death under the influence of unknown energy.

This is the most solid part of their bodies and also encapsulates the essence of these strange beings.

After processing, they can be used as raw materials for weapons or as special casting objects, rated as “excellent,” exclusively obtained by the hunter.

Tree Spirit Reincarnation Technique * Puppet Core: This is the core of a forbidden voodoo skill, containing the despair of a special soul before its death along with the essence blood of a witch apprentice. Even more valuable is the energy it has drawn from the Swamp Demon Vine, making it a higher quality puppet core.

Through special methods, it can be refined into a more powerful puppet.

Rated as “precious,” exclusively obtained by the hunter.

“Detection of ‘excellent’ and ‘precious’ level trophies, should they be turned in?”

“After turning in, trophies cannot be used as raw materials anymore.”

That puppet core, just by reading the description, one can tell its value. If given to the right person, it could definitely have a tremendous effect.

Yet Roger hesitated only for a moment before choosing to turn them in. Right now, upgrading the Hunter’s Cabin was the most important thing.

“Turn in!”

The two trophies in his hand emitted a faint glow, then slipped through his fingers like fine sand. When they reappeared, they were already hanging in the trophy area on the wall.

Only this time, there was an adjustment in the position of the trophies on the wall.

At the very top was the eerie doll, the puppet core.

Below it were the Water Ghosts’ fins and the Mutated Scales.

At the bottom were the mutated wolf claws and the Murloc’s heart.

These were all the trophies Roger had gathered so far.

After a short pause, the cabin began to tremble slightly. This time, the tremors lasted longer and felt stronger; also, it seemed as if a strange energy swept over Roger’s body.

Just as Roger was starting to feel uneasy, the shaking of the cabin stopped, and a message appeared on the notice board.

“Hunter’s Cabin undergoing a crucial upgrade, remaining time 11:59:57′.”

“Previous upgrades were instantaneous. Why is this one so special?”

“Could it really be a qualitative change?”

Calculating the time, Roger felt that he would probably be waiting until the morning of the next day.

But that couldn’t be helped; he took out some food from the Storage Box and, while stuffing himself rather messily, he pushed open the cabin door.

Glancing up accidentally, Roger almost choked on his food.

The sun was setting in the west, the sky awash with fiery red, as the sun struggled to radiate its last bit of warmth.

And at that moment, opposite the Hunter’s Cabin, beyond a densely packed row of tombstones, there sat Anna under the shadow of a large tree, thoughtfully watching the setting sun.

“What’s going on?”

Roger was somewhat stunned.

“A ghost admiring the sunset?”

“Sigh…”

“It looks like not only is my house abnormal, but my neighbor is too…”
