Chapter 205: Chapter 205 Phytopathology

“Emergency notice, emergency notice!”

Hearing the voice coming from the walkie-talkie, Adeline slowly reduced her speed and then picked up the device.

“Go ahead,” she said.

“A special epidemic has broken out in Rivervalley Town. All officers on leave or not on duty must immediately report to Baytown Police Department. We’re forming a temporary support team to head to Rivervalley Town!”

“Roger that!”

Adeline reluctantly hung up the walkie-talkie, mulling over a quick call to Amanda.

Feeling somewhat guilty for not being able to take Amanda to Bordeaux City the day before, she had planned to visit Amanda in Bordeaux today, after finally getting some free time.

But who could have anticipated this sudden mission?

After a brief chat, Adeline turned the car around and headed to the Baytown Police Department.

When she walked into the meeting room, she found that except for two colleagues who were on annual leave and away from Armenia, nearly everyone else had already arrived.

Greg nodded at Adeline and pointed to a chair next to him.

“Just yesterday morning, Rivervalley Town Hospital received thirty-two strange patients,” he started.

“All of them had been brought in by relatives or friends because they had ingested an abnormally large amount of soil.”

“Some were in such severe condition that they died en route to the hospital.”

“After simple induced vomiting and corresponding treatment, the condition of most patients stabilized. But soon after dawn, these patients, who had previously been unconscious, began to display terrifying aggression,” he continued.

“Using their fingernails, their teeth, and any weapons they could get their hands on, they attacked anyone they saw!”

The man speaking was a middle-aged man with a protruding belly.

“Due to the sudden outbreak, six medical staff members lost their lives!”

“After expert analysis, it has been preliminarily determined to be a new form of drug source.”

“The news has been temporarily sealed off. We need to depart immediately to support Rivervalley Town,” the middle-aged man declared, his voice grave.

“Boss, shouldn’t this be a matter for the Center for Disease Control and Defense?” asked someone.

“Why are they sending us?”

“To give injections to those crazed individuals?”

A voice from below elicited a round of laughter.

The middle-aged man shook his head, “Because of the incident at the hospital, the whole of Rivervalley Town has become unsettled. With the agitation of the citizens, the crime rate has shot up!”

He held up five fingers.

“For every day we provide support, we will receive a subsidy multiplied by five!”

“Smack!”

He slammed his palm down on the table.

“Does anyone plan not to go?”

In Armenia, local police departments exclusively serve the residents of their region, and cross-district actions are very rare. Yet, after hearing the compensation plan proposed by the middle-aged man, the atmosphere heated up significantly.

“Alright, I hope this support mission lasts for a month,” someone said.

The nature of the work seemed no different from their duties in Baytown, and an opportunity that seemed like easy money was not something anyone intended to miss out on.

Adeline hesitated for a moment, she had intended to refuse, but just then, the middle-aged man above spoke again.

“Since no one is bowing out,” he said.

“Adeline, you’re in charge of this operation, with Greg assisting. Leave a few people to handle things here in Baytown; everyone else will follow Adeline’s orders.”

“Yes, sir!”

Although Adeline felt like refusing, when the words reached her lips, she reluctantly nodded her head.

Rivervalley Town was not far from Baytown, and under good road conditions, it could be reached in about an hour.

“For the specifics, you can find Officer Michael when you get to Rivervalley Town, and you can address any issues to him,” the middle-aged man advised, then left.

Flipping through the documents in her hands, Adeline couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

Although those high-on-life guys could do anything, eating dirt…

And it was all of them showing symptoms of eating dirt, which was quite strange.

After quickly organizing the information, Adeline also filtered through the number of people involved.

Before leaving, she had called Officer Michael in Rivervalley Town several times, but no one answered the phone after it connected.

Since it wasn’t far, Adeline and her party decided to set out directly.

An hour into their drive, they entered Rivervalley Town, an ordinarily prosperous and peaceful small town, but now its streets were unusually quiet.

Many shops were closed, and there weren’t many people on the streets. Adeline even noticed a few young people wearing strange clothes.

“The situation seems to be more serious than we thought,”

Greg said, frowning.

Arriving at the police station, they found a large crowd of Rivervalley Town residents gathered; some were holding banners and loudly protesting.

Listening in, it was the usual talk about safety and taxes. A strong black man was on a platform, trying to calm the crowd.

But clearly, his efforts were ineffective.

Then, suddenly, a disturbance erupted in the crowd. A young man knocked a woman to the ground next to him. His hands flailing wildly, he soon had the woman beaten and bloody.

The other people nearby hurried to intervene, but the young man had strength far beyond that of a normal person. Several strong men who tried to stop him were easily knocked aside by him.

Using hands and feet, he leaped onto a strong man’s back and, opening his mouth wide, he viciously tore off the man’s ear.

“Ah…”

The man screamed in agony, and no one else dared to approach to help.

“Stop him!” the black man on the platform shouted loudly.

But the officers inside the police station were blocked by the crowd, and for a moment they couldn’t break through. That was when Adeline and Greg opened their car doors and charged from the outer edge.

“Get down!”

Instead of rashly grabbing the young man, Greg punched him in the ribs. The blow forced the young man to involuntarily open his mouth.

Adeline seized the moment to step forward and kick the man down.

Rolling on the ground, the young man let out a strange howl, then quickly got up and charged again!

Adeline’s pupils contracted slightly; now she could see the young man’s face clearly.

His clothes suggested he was only eighteen or nineteen but, for some reason, his entire face looked dehydrated, shriveled, and old.

His eyes were wide open, the whites turned blood red, and when he opened his mouth, he resembled a starving wild animal.

“Careful, Adeline!”

Greg stepped forward and collided with the young man, but even with his strength, he struggled a bit.

The two entwined, and the crowd around them quickly dispersed while officers from the police station came to assist.

Just then, several young people in odd clothing that Adeline had noticed earlier suddenly charged forward.

Bang!

With just a kick, they sent the young man flying several meters, then lifted their hand; a dart shot out of a gun and stuck into the body of the fallen man.

The officer previously on the platform recognized the emblem on Adeline’s car.

“Is that Sheriff Adeline?”

“Have you not found the Source of drugs yet?”

Adeline countered.

The black man sighed and led Adeline and her team into the interior of the police station. Once everyone was seated, he spoke gravely:

“This is not some new kind of drug.”

“Honestly, we are also unclear about what’s causing this situation.”

“We can only tentatively call it ‘Botanification Disease’!”
