Chapter 115: Strategy

Since Flain was the commander of an elite unit, he had experience with strategy, so it wasn’t that hard for him. He also barely had enough ink, and if he hadn’t passed the first task, he would have had to shorten it.

Two minutes and fifty seconds. In a moment, the last second passed, Aina raised her palm. "Time’s up. Anyone still writing gets a slap," she said with a smirk.

Then she started walking to each student, evaluating their strategy to see if it would work or not. Some students failed, but no one caused any problems after the Nyvar incident.

Finally, Aina came to the side of the academy and took Flor’s paper, studying it for a few seconds. "Quite a good strategy, and it would most likely work. Though it could be better—for example, you could have sent more soldiers into a circular attack and reduced the defense, because once the orc is tired, defense isn’t that necessary. In any case, you passed," she said and handed the scroll back to Flor.

Then she came to Flain and started reading his scroll. "Another great strategy that would succeed, but still not perfect. You could have had soldiers manipulate the orc’s attention, so the rear attack would be even more effective, as the orc would have even less room for defense. Some elite fire orcs have openings on their backs that spray lava, but we’re not considering elite orcs in this scenario. I do like that your strategy requires a minimum of tanks, because the confused orc would attack poorly and thus miss a lot. But in the end, you passed," Aina praised Flain.

Flain was the commander of a small elite unit that had only 5 members, so he wasn’t used to leading larger forces than his usual. That’s why he didn’t send a few soldiers to distract the enemy.

Aina moved to Itai and looked at his strategy. "What is this supposed to be? Of course you’re going to lose if you send the majority of your soldiers straight at him. Also, regular archers don’t work on fire orcs who are at least Stage 3 because their skin is too tough. You also have no defensive units, meaning no tanks, so your regular soldiers would take the brunt of the orc’s attacks. Of course you’re going to lose—you failed," she said.

Itai nervously grabbed his head. "Well, I guess I won’t be a very good strategist," he said.

Aina then returned to her position. "What you just did was quite a simple strategy, and most of you succeeded because fire orcs aren’t that strong, and you definitely don’t need to send an army against them," she said.

Then she smiled kindly, causing many students to blush. "Almost no one believes me when I say that such a sweet girl like me used to lead great armies of the Empire of Light and was one of the best generals until I was reassigned to this even more important position," she said.

"Today’s lecture is over, you may leave," she said in the end.

The students began to leave.

The next subject was finally Magic. Flain assumed that not many people had poison affrity because he hadn’t seen anyone use it yet, and it also doesn’t sound exactly common for a human to have poison affrity.

In Mind Range, Flain once again lost the mask of an average student because he was genuinely curious about how good a strategy he could write. Also, many students hadn’t heard Aina talk about him, and those who were close were focused on their own strategy and on Aina’s words about improvements, and the fact that she praised some random student next to them didn’t matter to them at all.

Flain was walking alone around the academy because he couldn’t find Flor or Itai, and he didn’t really feel like looking for them either. He wanted to be alone for a while. In the center of the academy, he looked at the statue of the Emperor of Light and smirked—he too planned to become powerful and subjugate a nation to serve him and lead them.

Flain came to one of the stalls where there were snacks and took one. It was sweet dough in the shape of balls, coated in honey and puffed on a skewer. Flain put it in his mouth and bit down, but the balls fell into his armor and he felt nothing.

Flain had already forgotten what it feels like to be human, a living being. What it’s like to feel pain, taste, or hunger. But Flain pushed these thoughts out of his head. He was given a second chance at life—at revenge. Being human is a weakness, all those unpleasant traits that Flain got rid of are gone. He has no reason to want to be human again.

But Flain, in his current form, carries one great burden—he is still not free. The freedom he gained when he was released from slavery and saw himself on the path of the army, that freedom he no longer has.

The problem is that Flain is practically Itai’s undeath who must obey every command of his or suffer punishment. That sounds like slavery. Itai doesn’t take advantage of the fact that Flain is his slave and lets Flain do what he wants, but somewhere far in the back of Flain’s mind, that fact still nags at him.

What if Itai goes crazy? Or starts getting greedy and wants to control Flain? Sure, it’s unlikely that something like that would happen with Itai, because Itai isn’t the type to do something like that. But Flain is immortal, which means Itai practically is too. Human personalities evolve, and Flain can’t completely control or manipulate that. In infinity, which is an unimaginably long time, the world’s influence could change Itai quite a bit. ƒrēenovelkiss.com

But that’s an influence of the future. Flain doesn’t assume something like that will happen in the near future. But it’s better to start looking for ways to become free sooner rather than later. Flain has been in this world for only one year, and in that year he has already done great things, but he still doesn’t fully understand this world and doesn’t know most of the options it offers.

How could he know? One year compared to eternity is just an insignificant handful of time in which not much can be discovered...
