Chapter 101: Nightmare Truly Began [II]

For a while, only silent remained as Astrid keenly and worriedly observed Liam, who was breathing heavily. There was a trace of blood at the corner of his lips, which was her blood.

"Liam," she called out in a pretty low voice. "Are you fine?"

Liam shot his eyes open and gazed at her blankly before he dragged himself to sit up. "What happened?" He asked, looking around the unfamiliar place.

Astrid did not know what to tell him thus she just guiltily kept quiet. Seeing the confusion on his face deeply cut her heart, knowing it was her fault.

"Is this... your cottage?" Liam questioned shifting back to her, then added. "You’ve been gone for weeks... I came to check every day but all of you... we’re gone. Did something happen? Where... are the children? Are you all fine?"

His endless questions broke Astrid and she instantly started apologising. "Liam, I don’t know what to say for you to forgive me... I... it’s all my fault. I ruined your... life. I’m really sorry."

"What... are you saying? It’s fine... you don’t have to apologize for leaving without a notice. It might have been..."

Astrid shook her head vigorously, interrupting him, "That’s not what I mean."

Liam kept silent confusedly gazing at her. "What is it then?"

Astrid took a deep sigh of regret then answered, "Those... monsters turned you... They..." She could not complete her statement. A know formed on her throat choking her thay she fell breathless. Thus, she could only gesture at him to stand up and follow her.

Liam did so wondering whatbwas happening to her. It was until he had almost gotten put of the door that he felt pain wash over his entire body, as if he was being burned. He instinctively stumble backwards and fell to his knees, then his eyes fell on Astrid who was outside.

"What... just happened?" Liam asked, standing up, then tried to go out but the same thing happened.

Astrid stepped in and helped him to his feet. "You were bitten by two vampires... Actually, they were hybrids."

Liam eyes flickered before he murmured, "Bitten?... But I..." Looking at his body, "Does that mean I’m a... Vampire now?"

Astrid nodded. "I didn’t know this would happen to you. I’m really sorry, Liam."

Liam broke from his stupor hearing her words. "Hey, don’t blame yourself. This has nothing to do you with you."

Astrid stepped back from him when he attempted to hold her heard for comfort. "It has. Everything has to do with me."

In what seemed like a century, she briefly explained to Liam everything. Since the night her parents died till now.

"That’s why every single misfortune that has befallen you is all my fault. Of only I had not been the Primal Alpha, my parents would have been alive, my brothers would have to live in fear, and you would lead a normal human life."

Liam took a silent long breath, then sat on the wooden floor. His eyes were as calm as death, staring direct into a spot. "As long as you are all safe, then, I don’t mind. So, stop bla.ing yourself." He raised his gaze to meet hers.

"How can I not?" Astrid dropped to her knees. "Even if I use my life to repay you, that’ll never be enough."

Liam’s eyes never left hers that tried to avoid contact, but he could clearly feel her sincerity and the guilt they carried. It pained him a lot.

"You don’t have to do anything. I’m only glad you’re safe," he said, hardly smiling, though he tried as much not to show her his weakness. "But can I ask you something?"

"Go ahead," Astrid wiped away her falling tears.

"You said the... Vampire King is... your mate," he paused, keenly watching her, with an unfathomable look. "Are you sure... he can be trusted? What if he’s just using you because he knows... you are special?"

Astrid slowly raised her eyes, staring at him. "I trust him. He would never do that." Astrid said confidently, and wipe away the tear stains.

If only she had waited a little bit more, then may e she would have seen the change in Liam’s expression. His eyes were filled with something: anger, despise, and killing intent sharper than any steel. It disappeared as quickly as it came.

"Good, if you say so." He stated, half smiling.

"Then... what will you do? I mean... you can’t leave the cottage until... sun comes down." The last words came out in a low whisper.

"I’ll just wait," Liam replied almost immediately, then asked. "Are you leaving?"

Astrid looked at him with a nod. "I need to head back to the palace to check on my brothers. I’m sure grand... the Lycan King will find a way to get to them right now when neither Alaric, nor Zander, nor Finn is around... I’ll come to check on you as soon as I make sure they are safe."

Liam agreed and after bidding each other goodbye, Astrid left. Immediately she did, Liam’s eyes shone crimson and his fangs elongated.

"Alaric!"

**********

Astrid quickened to her brothers’ rooms after having searched outside, checking each of their rooms, but they were nowhere to be found. She asked around but the servants said they had not seen them. She walked every nook she knew they would go but still, she couldn’t find them.

If this was a nightmare, she just hoped to wake up soon because she was losing her mind. Her breathing became haggard and she almost collapsed, when someone pulled her hand. She looked and an unfamiliar man stood before her, tightly crushing her wrist. Astrid jacked away her hand, and moved a step back before she hit the wall.

"Who are... you?" She asked, her voice cracked.

"You’ve seven days to complete what you were asked of. If you fail, kiss your brothers goodbye."

Astrid was yet to register what was happening before the man left in a flash. His words echoed in her mind, and she fell to the ground. Her dearest brothers... they were now in the hands of their ruthless grandfather who definitely wouldn’t bat an eye to kill them. After all, he was cruel enough to kill his won son, what about grandchildren. They were nothing.

"Sister-in-law, what are you doing here?" Finn’s voice brought her back to reality and she instantly stood up, turning around. And there, stood Finn and Zander, curiously staring at her.
