Chapter 38: Brother

[Teach Clara gameplay fundamentals. Elevate her performance from novice to proficient level and beat the first boss.]

Noa exhaled upon seeing what the system wanted from him.

It wasn’t only a quest he had to complete for rewards. It was also a challenge he wanted to overcome, and it all depended on how quick a learner Clara actually was.

So he stole a glance at her.

Yes, she had shown frustration earlier, but she was laughing now.

She looked happy—genuinely happy. Her tongue slightly poked out of her mouth as she concentrated and tried to keep her cool.

Seeing this, a new awareness flickered in Noa’s mind.

Thoughts manifested naturally and quickly, allowing Noa to understand her on a deeper level.

With that, he could predict her next actions, read her movements, and better guide her through puzzles and tough hurdles.

Clara noticed how locked in he was. "You are quiet," she said, eying him closely.

Even though she was talking, her character still managed to escape the danger with a precise jump. It was timed perfectly, forcing Noa’s lips to part in amusement.

"I am just watching a newbie learn. It’s fascinating," he said, overtaking her.

The enormous screen before them was split in two, each person having their own section to view.

"Be careful," Clara warned. "I told you I am a fast learner."

"I noticed," Noa said, and he had to admit her ability to adapt to situations was amazing. Not only did she quickly get a handle on the controls, but she was also solving puzzles like a machine.

The two kept playing.

Each time Clara died, she learned from her mistakes.

Minutes passed by quickly, and their banter filled the luxurious room. The snacks were free of charge, and Noa indulged himself with potato chips of various flavors.

Half an hour later, they encountered the first boss.

It was an angry vacuum that was left to rot by the game’s main characters.

The fight was troublesome at first. It needed perfect coordination from the players, and even Noa failed once.

Still, they didn’t give up and defeated the boss relatively easily.

The moment the game announced victory, Clara jumped up from her seat and hugged Noa, her happiness soaring through the roof.

Her perfume hit Noa immediately as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

It was sweet and cold—perfectly suited to her.

For a split second, Noa froze like a robot.

Her warmth pressed against him, and he could swear he felt her heartbeat. He wasn’t used to this kind of physical touch, not from someone as attractive as her.

However, before he regained his composure, Clara pulled away, her voice louder than usual.

"That was amazing," she shouted, brushing her hair back smugly. "Did you see that last hit? I carried your ass, right?"

Noa was taken aback because of her excitement.

But it spread to him as well.

"Sure, let’s go with that," he said, smirking at her.

Meanwhile, the system swiftly announced the quest completion. Yet Noa felt as if he had already received a reward earlier.

[Quest Completed]

[Requirement: Teach Clara gameplay fundamentals. Elevate her performance from novice to proficient level and beat the first boss.]

[Reward: Gamer’s Flow (Passive)]

[Description: You can enter a heightened state of focus—similar to when you are playing games, reducing mistakes and improving your response time.]

Just like before, this new ability needed some time to sync with his nerves.

Noa could already feel something.

It was as if something inside him hummed with readiness, waiting to be unleashed. ’I think a more accurate description would be that I can lock in whenever I want,’ he muttered in his head, but also approved the skill.

[It can easily drain your energy. Be careful how you use it.]

The system warned, but the only thing Noa could think of right now was his sudden urge to test this skill.

Somehow, he continued to end up with amazing abilities.

They could transform his life if used right, but the situation rarely allowed him to shine.

Take Shameless Persistence, for example. It was a useful and fun skill to play with, but the only people he had contact with were Hana and now Clara.

Of course, he didn’t want to anger these two that much.

’Perhaps I can test it on someone,’ Noa thought, looking at Clara’s bright expression. Seeing how happy she was, he decided to control himself.

The other passive skill Noa had was increasing his luck.

It was even harder to check, especially because it had conditions to fulfill.

’Maybe the reason I got close to her is because of my luck?’ he thought and checked the time.

As soon as he did, Noa realized that Hana’s school would end in less than an hour, and he had to get moving.

He sighed. "We should probably wrap up. I have to pick up Hana from school."

Clara nodded.

She was still catching her breath after all that shouting. "Hana... is she your adorable sister?"

"Yeah," Noa smirked, thinking about her. "She hates waiting."

Hearing this, Clara moved immediately. "Let’s not make her wait then." She quickly took her purse and reached the door even before Noa did.

Noa had to bring her to the cafe where she had left her car.

She also knew that and walked out of the room with graceful steps. "Next time, we have to beat the next boss as well."

Noa grinned as they reached the actual gaming store. "I want to buy a new PC. I won’t take long," he promised and walked inside.

There he saw all sorts of equipment, starting with mechanical keyboards and ending with gaming laptops, the store had everything.

What’s more, it covered three floors—proving how high-end it actually was.

Looking at these expensive items, Noa realized how crap his old gear had been.

So he didn’t hesitate and picked a computer powerful enough to run Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra graphics and a monitor so clear, it could expose a character’s soul.

In total, he was about to pay $11,000.

But before Noa managed to complete the transaction, a man in his late twenties approached.

"You didn’t tell me you were visiting, little sister," he said to Clara, his voice rough.

’Oh shit,’ Noa exclaimed to himself.

He knew, or perhaps hoped something like this would happen. ’But where is my quest?’
