Dimensional Travels: World at War-Chapter 87: Nuclear
Milano sighed as he rubbed his hands against the desk. He looked out the window and shook his head. "At this point, if you told me that the entire state of texas is on the other side of the map, I wouldn’t be surprised."
They all chuckled.
"Now, lets get down to business. Austin leadership is open to renegotiations with us. Especially after Jessica saving half the city. You will take a small team and meet with officials from Austin and Riemskin."
Eric nodded. "I have the SOF teams working in combination with the young dragons right now. They should be working as we speak to destroy the mana suppression circles we know of. King Tryasche has made it clear he wishes for those to be erased from existence."
Milano crossed his arms as he looked at the world map. "Good. If we had to deal with both types of circles, targeting would be difficult."
The General than turned to Mia. "Riemskin has informed me that if you wish to keep working with us, you are free to do so, but they will need more regular reports. They understand the baby being born, but now that you are active they are essentially asking if you will be a mother, or continue working in intel."
Mia slowly shook her head in response. "I bet Ayeolla is asking because she wants to be closer to Liara." She said as she laughed. "Very well. I will send more reports."
Eric wrapped his arm around her back as he looked at Owersky. "What will you do now? We cannot allow you into the armed forces, and outside of your role as being a consultant, we won’t have much for you to do."
The former butler smiled as he looked to where the mountains used to be. "For many years I have been away from family. I haven’t been able to play with my grandchildren because my duties as a butler required my presence. I think I will enjoy my retirement."
Eric’s eyes softened as he looked at the man. "There is a man named ’Kamer’ down at Freedom town. You may get along with him well."
Owersky’s eyes widened. "Are you referring to "Kamer the butcher?’ That man is still alive? He has to be two hundred years old by now."
Mia looked at Owersky in confusion, while Eric blinked.
"Kamer the Butcher?"
Owersky chuckled. "Back when the Empire was trying to origninally claim the Esponia region, a man named Kamer would be waiting. He recieved his moniker as the butcher because he has killed over four thousand Empire troops. The Empire had long since thought he was dead. A single spell of his was equivalent to a dragons breath."
Eric and Mia both stood still. Eric shook his head.
"So you’re telling me the man I play poker with and have seen begging to hold my daughter..."
He exhaled.
"Is a mage powerful enough to go one on one with dragons..."
Owersky chuckled. "His face and name are known far and wide in the empire, but here he is merely a poker player."
The butler then turned to Mia.
"I was happy to know that Sarah made it back safely. I hear that she was nearly killed by Heith. I am glad your beloved was able to rescue her. Is she well?"
Mia sighed and smiled, grasping Owersky’s hand. "Yes. Her husband and the kids are all doing well. Maythan told me that she almost broke his bones when they reunited."
Owersky smirked.
"Yes. In our secret meetings she would never cease talking about her family. I am happy to know that all is well with them."
As he spoke, the room began to shake. Eric grabbed Mia, holding her close as the desk rattled. Pictures hung on the wall fell with glass shattering, and the lights flickered.
"What now?" Eric said as he looked around. The radio came to life in the background, a radio call. Eric hoped on the radio. "This is task force 6-8. Identify yourself."
A deep southern drawl answered. "My name is Daniel Serantaz." He answered calmly. "It seems that what happened to Austin happened to us. I am the project manager for Panxan Regional Oil manufacturing."
Eric looked at Mia, his jaw dropping. "We need to find out where they are. And now."
A soldier burst into the room, his chest heaving as he interrupted the meeting. "Sir. We have a problem." The major said as he rushed over to Milano.
"There was another fracture near the shoreline-"
Milano held a hand up, silencing the major. "Find out where the rig is located. Have 4-1 alpha, Bravo, and Charlie companies send up a perimeter."
"Sir... it’s a nuclear facility."
Eric, Milano, and Miher stiffened. Eric set the mic for the radio down and walked stiffly over to Mia. He kissed her on the head.
"Ill take care of it sir."
He turned to Mia, grasping her hand. "I love you."
She nodded, tearing up slightly while stroking his face.
"I love you too. Be safe."
Eric turned away, stroking her hair before turning to the Major. "Walk with me, and tell me everything you know about the facility. Where is it, and have we made contact with it?"
As Eric began to move, the Major began talking.
"It is located approximately fifteen miles north of Reimskin city."
Eric stopped, his hand on the truck.
"So less than fifteen miles from Esponia?"
The major nodded.
"Fuck."
"Have we made contact with them?" Eric said as he opened the door to his truck.
"Negative, Master Sergeant. ISR was what picked the location up."
Eric nodded as he started the truck and sped off. While on the way, he called Milano. "Sir, we’re probably gonna need half of 4-1 to cover both sites. One half on one, the other half on the other. And...
Its within targeting range of Esponia."
Milano sucked in a breath, and Eric could hear a pen tapping against the desk as the General seemed to be in deep thought.
"Okay, secure it for now. Initiate shut down. We will detain a security detail on it. Hammond will take point on that. Six tanks and Bradleys will be stationed there."
Eric exhaled as Milano hung up. Twelve vehicles total for a nuclear facility. He shook his head as he drove on. He couldn’t afford to think about it.
As he pulled up, he groaned. "Of course they made it here first." Helicopters and news anchors stood outside the fence line of the facility. Armed guards stood there, weapons ready should anyone try to trespass.
Eric walked up to the guard in front. "Who’s in charge?"
The guard hesitated as he looked at his shift mates. There was no protocol for dealing with Soldiers.
"Its okay Dariel. I have it from here, an older man said as he walked up. He patted the guard on the shoulder as he approached Eric. He took one look at the rank on Eric’s chest and nodded. "Master Sergeant Dryer. I am Jonathan Light. I run the security of this facility. Retired Gunnery Sergeant, USMC. What do you need from us, and what can you tell me?"
He motioned towards the trees in the background. "I assume we are in the same boat as the other things that have been dissappearing in the world."
Eric nodded, his face grim.
"Well Gunny, I will be frank. There is going to be a large enemy force approaching from the west here in less than one month. We will assist with security. We have six bradleys and six Abrams that we will bring over. What kinds of capabilities do you have outside of the guards?"
Jonathon sighed as he looked around. "We have a few .50 cals mounted on vehicles, and backup generators for power. We have roughly six armed guards on site currently."
Eric nodded, taking notes. "Very well. Is there a way to safely shut down the facility and destroy it?"
Jonathan shook his head. "Under no circumstances can this facility be destroyed. We have already shut it down, but destroying it cannot happen for any reason. No matter what, the only thing we can do is keep it in shut down mode."
Eric sighed as he looked up at the towers. The large cone-like structures stood over purple trees like they were each middle fingers pointing back at Eric. "That complicates things." He grumbled.
He then turned back to Jonathan. "We will assist however we can, but we are spread thin ourselves. The twelve vehicles we are sending are our limit."
The Gunny nodded back. "I understand. The reactor will remain on shut off mode." He then turned to the facility. "Is there a place my people can stay nearby when they are not at work? There is not enough cots and food to supply everyone currently on station."
Eric sighed again.
"I will have cots and MRE’s brought over. We will figure out food at a later time. We unfortunately do not have manpower to shuttle people back and forth."
