Chapter 93: Where the wind blows

Josh and Justin walked the streets of Brishian city. They marveled at the vibrant atmosphere. Josh looked at a street vendor and shook his head.

"You know what this reminds me of?"

A passing cat girl caught the eye of Justin. He was enamored by her before shaking his head and turning to Josh. "Whats up?"

Josh laughed. "You dweebs, I swear. You’re worse than privates when they get a taste of Korea or Europe."

Justin flipped him off. "Fuck you my dream came true. How could I not lose my mind? Now, what were you saying?"

Josh smirked as they were lead to a bar. The advisors did their best to look like they were ignoring the conversation, but Justin’s advisor was taking mental notes as the two heroes talked.

"Back home. There is a major war going on, but people are ignoring it because it doesn’t affect them personally. This place is the same."

Josh paused, stopping in his tracks and almost causing Justin to slam into him.

"You’re fucking right. I never thought of that. Holy shit."

The two shared a laugh while walking up to the bar.

The advisors shared another glance, eyebrows arched as the bar went quiet for a moment. The soldiers already there took one glance at Justin and Josh and went back to their conversations.

"Its just two kids." A grisled man with scars covering his face said as he observed Justin. "Now. As I was saying lads.... I’m telling ya. That chick was the tight-" He stopped talking when he noticed Josh’s advisor staring him down. He gulped as he made eye contact with the woman. He knew her very well. She was the Intelligence commander of the 3rd division. His division. He shook his head and gave her the thumbs up before turning back to his men.

"Do you motherfuckers want another drink?"

Josh’s ears perked up as he heard the sudden change of conversation. "Hmm. So they have brothels here?"

Justin shook his head, slamming a coin down on the table. "If you visit a brothel, I will clown you until we die. Even your ghost won’t be safe."

Josh groaned. "Even in another world, you are a prude. Come on man. Lighten up. Little miss assistant here has been sizing you up since she was assigned to you. I ain’t got pull like you have, you Greek god mother fucker. Let me have some fun too."

Justin smacked the back of Josh’s head playfully. "Yo, have ya forgotten what happened to the dude from Echo company? He damn near had to have his balls replaced cause they swelled so much."

Josh smacked Justin in the back of the head. "Yo, forget that. Wait... I just realized something. We can understand them, and they can understand us."

Justin nodded. "That’s pretty typical in Isekai."

"This isn’t a goddamn anime, you moron!"

While the two heroes were going about being fools at the bar, the assistants hung back in the corner.

"What do you think, Erica?" Justin’s assistant whispered, her eyes scanning the bar for any soldiers speaking about things they shouldn’t.

Erica shook her head, crossing her legs and smoothing her skirt. She took a sip of her water. "It is hard to control the soldiers. Hopefully our presence is enough to keep them from talking about the past."

The other woman sighed, slumping against her chair. "It will be hard to continue covering up the past. Don’t you think the heroes deserve to know? What if they come across former slaves?"

"Susan, you must not think like that. Our lord has given us our orders. We serve and obey." Erica turned to the soldiers still talking. They noticed her looking at them and all nodded. After finishing their beers, they got up and left.

No one remained in the bar except the bar staff, the two heroes, a few civilians, and the assistants.

Justin watched the soldiers leave. "Hm. Wonder what’s gotten into them. First they talk about the brothels, and then they leave? I wanted to drink with em’."

Josh shook his head. "Dude. Get a grip. They prolly get training or some shit to do."

Justin nodded. His assistant walked up to the pair of heroes. "Are you two gentlemen enjoying your time here?"

"Yes ma’am. One thing I am noticing is that we can understand ya’ll, while you can understand us. What is that all about?"

She smiled, adjusting a strand of her blonde hair while joining the two men. "That is a blessing of our lord. He didn’t want you to two suffer learning the language of this world, so he gave a small blessing to where you could converse with us, and us with you."

Josh took a sip of his drink while observing the woman. His eyes narrowed as he noticed her smoothing her hair out again.

Are they hiding something?

He thought it was weird when the soldiers left after sharing one look with the assistants, and the brothel talk had ceased immediately. Justin was still enamored with this new world, but Josh picked up on it slightly. The bar atmosphere was tense. The bartender kept regarding the assistants with wary eyes, over polishing the beer kegs. The soldiers had left prematurely, and the civilians in the corner were silent. Who in a bar was ever silent?

As he made these observations, he set the glass down, feigning ignorance. "Ahh, that’s some good stuff. Back in our world, we had to wait until we were 21 to drink."

The bartenders ears perked up as he heard Josh speaking. The assistant shot the man a look before tilting her head and smiling at the young hero. "Mr. Josh, please refrain from noting that you are from another world." She said quietly. "We do not want the wrong parties to learn that you come from the other side. Since we are still at war with people from your world, we do not wish for the wrong ears to learn of your whereabouts."

Josh nodded at the lady before finishing another drink. "My apologies. I forgot that our arrival hasn’t been announced yet. When is that scheduled to take place?"

She smiled, leaning against the bar as Justin finished his own drink. "We plan on moving you two out to the front lines in one week. Due to the amount of time it takes to get there, we will likely do a grand ceremony either tomorrow or sometime the next day."

Two days later, Josh and Justin stood over looking a massive crowd standing in the city streets. Mithrael stood in front of him, his black suit and tie tailored to his body like he was a mafia boss on Earth.

Josh was wearing a red suit with a black tie, his hair slicked back and his beard had been shaved. Justin was wearing a purple suit and tie, his hair cut to a high and tight, with no facial hair to speak of.

"That’s a lot of fucking people." Justin said, his eyes wide as he regarded the crowd.

"Did the whole city come out for this?"

Mithrael smirked as he walked to the ledge of the balcony. The crowd roared when they saw him. Rumors had been spreading that their divine had come down from the heavens personally, and now?

The people could see him. The statues hanging up around the City mirrored his face perfectly. The very picture of their worship was standing in front of them.

And then...

Mithrael walked on the air. He stood high above the ground, looking down at the people of Brishian city.

Mithrael gestured to the crowd to quiet down, his hands pushing towards the air as if he was a father quietly correcting his children.

"My children of Cartharic." He began, his voice magically projecting to all corners of the crowd.

"Long have you suffered at the hands of these pagan otherworlders and the Riemskin alliance. They have broken the rules of this world, taking our various heroes that came before."

"It is with a heavy heart that I must confess that Heroes Jessica, Mickey, Janea, and all the others were violently tortured and killed by those calling themselves retribution against us."

A hush fell over the crowd. Some wailed, openly displaying their grief. Janea and Jessica were well loved heroes of the empire, and to hear of their passing was a knife to the hearts of many.

"As you know, I have allowed the Riemskin alliance to exist due to my own mercy. I thought that they would see the errors of their ways, such as the dragon’s had done. I was foolish. Those pagans have proven that without my presence they are nothing more than a disobedient child who resorts to violence when they do not get their way.

Today I come to you and proclaim no more! Your sons and daughters will no longer grow up wondering what lies beyond the mountains. Your grandchildren will learn what a fully unified world will be like. You will see the end of this war! This I promise as your God and your founder. I swear on my name as the God of Brishan...

We will unite this world fully under my banner!"

Mithrael walked down the air to a woman crying at the front. She was kneeling in front of Mithrael’s statue that stood in front of the castle. The woman’s sobs quieted the crowd. Many hands rested against her shoulder, comforting her.

Josh narrowed his eyes. "Isn’t that Erica?"

Justin looked down, noticing the same thing. "Huh. That’s strange. Maybe she lost someone important in the war?"

Josh sighed, deciding not to comment anymore.

I don’t buy it.

The two heroes watched as Mithrael calmly stepped besides the young woman. He rested his hand on her head. "Tell me, child. What ails you?"

The woman looked up at Mithrael, her eyes red as tears streaked down her face. "Lord Mithrael, my brother died to those savages. Are you telling me he can finally be avenged?"

Mithrael smiled, his hands wiping away the woman’s tears. "Yes, my lovely child. I promise on my name that your brother will be avenged."

The god then gestured to the balcony. He floated in the air, motioning for Josh and Justin to show themselves.

"Many among you have lost loved ones in this war. You have lived your entire lives hoping the men and women you love would come back. Look here! These two young heroes have pledged their assistance! Now! Tomorrow, they head to the front line. My beloved children of the Empire, have faith. It is time to end this five hundred year long fight!"

Cheers roared through the street, a thunderous cacophony of cheers and whistles. Catcalls for the heroes raised above the noise, and Justin merely shook his head. "Well... He certainly put on a show."
