Disaster Apocalypse: Farming, Family, and My Hidden Secret Space-Chapter 260. Unable to Enjoy Blessings
Chapter 260: 260. Unable to Enjoy Blessings
While running, she kept thinking about how she really couldn’t enjoy life properly; clearly, she could just lie flat and go about her days, but she always found ways to complicate things.
Hua Jin considered everything, except that she didn’t account for how fast she was going. She was indeed noticed as she wished, but she nearly scared the patrols at the mountain’s summit to death.
Who wouldn’t let their imagination run wild seeing a clump of fire floating towards the mountain at such speed in the dark?
One of them, who was a bit timid, almost peed his pants, clutching his brother nearby and stammering, "There’s... there’s... ghost... fire."
If his legs hadn’t turned to jelly, he would’ve run away already.
"It really... is ghost... fire," everyone clearly saw it, no one was blind, repeating the words in stammering fear, clutching each other closely.
With a yell, they abandoned the patrol and rushed to report to their master; their legs were so weak that they practically stumbled and crawled to their master’s cave.
"Young... young master?" One of them, slightly braver, tried to steady his chattering teeth and shouted fearfully from outside.
Luo Song was already prepared to sleep. Hearing the shouts from outside, he turned from undressing to look at the cave entrance.
"Master, I’ll go see what’s going on," Luo Lai said quickly, running towards the cave entrance. "What’s happening at this hour?"
"Forgive... forgive us, we were just patrolling below... and saw a ghost... fire coming... towards us."
Luo Song had already put his cotton coat back on. As he reached the entrance, he heard the words "ghost fire" and motioned for Luo Lai to open the door.
"Is it still there now?"
Seeing the young master wearing only a cotton coat without the cloak, Luo Lai quickly stepped back to put the cloak on his master.
Muttering, "Master, how could you forget your cloak again?"
Luo Song ignored him, letting Luo Lai fuss over him, his eyes on the trembling men at the entrance.
The men nodded vigorously. They feared no beasts but couldn’t face something as mysterious as this. Mostly, it was because the thought unsettled them too much, making their imagination go wild.
"It’s coming and getting faster," one of them shivered, pointing at the fast-approaching fireball behind them, shrinking back in fear.
"Young master..."
Ignoring Luo Lai’s attempts to stop him, Luo Song stepped out of the cave. He didn’t believe in ghost fires and naturally wanted to see it clearly.
There, in his sight, was a fireball hovering in mid-air, with a few glowing dots alongside it, quickly moving towards them.
How fast was it? In the blink of an eye, it had moved from halfway up the mountain to nearly upon them, making Luo Song’s heart begin to race unexpectedly.
"Could there really be ghosts in this world?" he asked himself.
But then he laughed, because he saw a familiar figure, along with two familiar ones.
"Jin’er..." Luo Song was a bit excited, and somewhat in disbelief.
As the firelight got closer, everyone else could see it clearly too, especially those who were frightened half to death, awkwardly wishing they could crawl into a crack in the mountain.
...They had embarrassed themselves in front of the master.
Hua Jin was also quite happy, thinking her decision to light the torch was really the right one—everyone was already on the mountain to welcome her.
"Brother Luo Song," Hua Jin, without any formality, handed the torch to Luo Lai next to Luo Song, lowered the scarf covering her face, and smiled at Luo Song in the firelight, "Surprised? Do I bring joy?"
The shimmering crescent moon shone brilliantly in the dark firelight, the radiant glow piercing deeply into Luo Song’s once lonely heart, which... began to beat incessantly.
"Surprised, joyful," he stared intently at the girl in front of him, too amazed to find words, instinctively repeating these words.
Seeing Hua Jin’s pale face from the cold, he immediately took off his cloak and draped it over Hua Jin, bundling her up tightly while instructing Luo Lai standing beside him.
"Hurry, prepare hot water and some good food."
"Ah, ah," Luo Lai turned and entered another cave not far away, clearly very happy himself.
Hua Jin glanced at the cloak now on her, not being overly formal. She had traveled quickly, and even wrapped up tightly, there was no avoiding the chill seeping through. To be honest, it was indeed quite cold.
"Let’s go, quickly into the cave." Happy, Luo Song completely forgot about the patrol trio scared half to death.
The three, now recovered, took the chance to slip away. Since the master forgot them, when better to sneak off?
Inside the cave, Hua Jin felt alive again as a warm current surged to her cheeks. She quickly pulled her scarf down completely and loosened her hat.
"Song’er, what’s the matter?" Through the dim candlelight, Hua Jin, who was scrutinizing the cave, heard an aged voice coming from a tent deep inside.
"Grandfather, it’s nothing. It’s the Hua family girl coming over."
Finding that his grandfather wasn’t asleep yet, Luo Song quickly shared the good news, as he knew well how grateful and interested his grandfather was toward the Hua family. Were it not for the increasingly busy business in Zhoucheng that required his presence, he’d have long made time to return home to meet his grandson’s saviors.
Feeling happy inside, his tone naturally carried cheerfulness, which his understanding grandfather immediately picked up on. The moment he heard it, he couldn’t stay lying down, calling the old steward by his side, quickly dressing himself.
If he remembered correctly, the girl from the Hua family his grandson mentioned was also a lifesaver, having heard about her more than once. This was a rarity since their family’s child was generally indifferent to any girls, and the grandfather was deeply curious about someone who managed to catch his eye.
"Hurry up," the old man said impatiently, too eager to even care about properly dressing as he got out of bed and slid into his shoes.
"Oh dear, master, please slow down," the sight of the master nearly slipping from the shoe pained the old steward, quickly helping him secure his shoes.
"My grandfather," answered Luo Song, explaining to Hua Jin at the same time.
Hua Jin nodded, with a hint of curiosity in her eyes.
That was the renowned wealthy and benevolent man in Shanggu Town.
Then, under Luo Song’s warm, yet not overly familiar, hospitality, she sat in a round-backed chair, while two servants vigilantly brought over a charcoal brazier and Luo Lai arrived with a tray.
"Miss Hua, have some sugared water."
It was a bowl of dark red ginger sugar water. It was unknown how much ginger and sugar were added, its color was so deep that the bottom of the bowl couldn’t be seen.
Without politeness, Hua Jin drank it. After traveling outside for so long, her body was indeed chilled and needed thorough warming from the inside out. The bowl of ginger sugar water was quickly polished off.
The timing was just right as she finished the sugared water, and Elder Luo, supported by the old steward, came out of the tent walking towards Hua Jin.
Seeing this, Hua Jin quickly stood up, with a dignified smile on her face, slightly gracefully bowing towards the elderly man who was approaching.
"Hello, Grandpa Luo!"
Allowing the elderly man to scrutinize her with composure, she wore a faint smile, showing none of the shyness or discomfort one might expect from a young lady arriving at someone else’s place deep into the night, especially under the gaze of a somewhat solemn elder.
