District 42-Chapter 311: Evacuation
Ivar began to wake up slowly. Before he could even open his eyes, he felt a strong headache that nearly made him pass out again. Say that his mind was going to explode was little to describe the pain he felt at that time.
Without getting completely conscious he could already guess that it was because his mask was thoroughly broken. It was, after all, one of the consequences of having the mask shattered.
When someone at District 42 took off their masks for too long or it somehow broke, and that alone was a difficult feat, the person in question would feel like his brain was being squeezed and his consciousness would get somewhat numb. It was a strange, uncomfortable, and painful feeling.
This was one of the reasons why people couldn’t just take off their masks or break them. Besides the restrictions of the masks, this punishment was an issue as well. Even if reduced to pieces, the masks could still cause this effect on one’s mind.
People weren’t lying the least when saying that those things were an extension of one’s very being.
Ivar wasn’t used to that pain at all. He could bear to be in the middle of an explosion of lava and fire, pretty much because of the metal alloy implanted on his bones and muscles. However, it wasn’t every day when he got his mask broken, and the punishment of the black masks was more excruciating than the brown ones.
’I think it would be better to die than to feel like this until I get my mask recovered... Damn, I don’t even know if I will be able to recover a shard of it. I hope it didn’t get reduced to ashes.’
The masks were unique things, made especially for someone since their birth. When one’s mask got broken, even a piece of it was enough to recover it. Nonetheless, it was impossible to reproduce it twice from the zero stage, so it must always be the same mask forever.
Anyway, Ivar couldn’t be worried about those things right now. He knew that there was a slight possibility to the battle still be ongoing. Even though he didn’t hear anything, it was likely. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
The man raised his upper body, trying to support himself on the ground with his hands. His muscles were numb, but he could manage to raise with just a little bit of struggle. He tried to orient himself by hearing his hands touching the ground, but no sound came.
’Maybe I am still on asphalt and the sound isn’t loud enough?’ He was getting annoyed by it. Even though he tried to pass his hands on the ground with more strength, he couldn’t hear anything.
Ivar opened slowly his eyes. He didn’t do it until now because he knew that they would be very sensitive to light. It would just serve to make his headache get worst. Nonetheless, due to the current situation that he was in, he needed to go through this suffering.
If something was still going on, then he should prepare himself to fight again if needed.
He didn’t feel his eyelids very well, but he was aware whether he opened them or not. Nevertheless, even though he was sure that he opened them, his vision was still dark. He moved his hands in front of his face. His burnt skin of the face was more sensitive than the other parts of his body, so he could feel his hands approaching, but nothing came to his field of vision.
When he tried to put his hands on his eyes to make sure that they were opened, he ended up touching them directly, which hurt a bit.
"What... What’s it? What happened to me?" He murmured, but he didn’t hear anything.
Ivar felt like falling eternally into a hole. It was dark, it made him get a claustrophobic feeling, and he couldn’t hear or touch anything at all.
His very existence felt somewhat transparent.
The Fenrir didn’t need to ask any more questions to know what happened to him.
’That final explosion caused it, huh? Tein sure was powerful. Maybe more powerful than me, even. The fire blinded me completely, it also destroyed my skin and flesh and made my tact sense quite numb. I was in blank range, so the sound must have had been overbearing as well, making me deaf. The proportions of that attack were catastrophic. I would guess that half of the city was thoroughly destroyed.’
Around Ivar were the healers who were taking care of him in the base construed for the survivors of that attack. Not all the people from the Castle were there, but just the warriors who fought in the frontline and those citizens who got severely harmed.
They were hidden in a wealthier place of the Midwest region, which had more Jarls than the other regions, so it was safer for that folk. They were fearing that the Frelsi could come to another attack to that improvised base.
"That’s just awful... One of the most powerful Aesirs ended up in such a state... Can we recover him somehow?" One of the healers asked, turning around.
"His tact is curable. His vision is impossible. And we can pray to get at most 30% of his hearing back, more than it would be a miracle. However, his senses won’t be the same for the rest of his life. The medicine of District 42 is amazing nowadays, but not almighty." Said Rurik, walking towards the healers who were around the bed that Ivar was on top.
Differently from the Fenrir, the Immortal Aesir got no harm at all. Everyone found it strange, but they ended up guessing the same thing as always: Rurik probably stayed at the rearguard, healing the others, not going to the real fight.
"I am thankful that Casper could reactivate the Teleporting pads some hours ago. If he didn’t do it, we would have had several casualties on the battlefield." Rurik murmured to himself.
The White warrior surely was the savior of everyone on that day.
"What about the Princess and Canute? They were disappeared, right?" A nurse asked.
"Yes. But we can’t know. After Casper activated the Teleporting pads, we just evacuated in a hurry. But he must know. He probably is still inside the Castle helping to evacuate the others..."
