District 42-Chapter 98: Complications
After the Ridire aimed his gun at Alfar, Amelia froze for an instant, glancing at the unconscious inmate. A chill went down her spine, and all her hair stood on end.
Not just the head nurse, but also Casper faltered for a moment. It was an unexpected outcome. Who would think in make a prisoner a hostage? They were disposable even for the nurses.
It wasn’t making sense at all, at least not for Casper, but the nurses understood very well what was going on there.
"You would not do such a thing, would you? I doubt that you have guts for this." She crossed her arms.
"Aah? Do you doubt me?" He moved his gun a few inches to the side and fired, not targeting Alfar’s head, but the side of his trunk.
The nurses around yelled, desperately, jumping backward, even bumping into other beds and almost falling.
Another hole appeared in his body, bleeding a lot, making the prisoner wake up for a moment screaming in pain, just to faint again.
The head nurse’s face went pale behind the mask, and her heart stopped for a while.
The Ridire pointed his gun towards Alfar’s head again, with his finger already pressing very slightly the trigger.
"I targeted a specific organ there, he will die for internal bleeding soon. Now, you have a deadline, and the certainty that I will explode his head if I get too angry, so it’s better for you to answer me!" He shouted.
Amelia couldn’t hide her unsteady breathing. Inside, she was panicking, but she could control herself.
"You will pay for this. He is the Dark elf, one of Rolvur’s favorites. If you kill him, most likely you will be killed or be used as a substitute!"
The commandant, who was serious until then, suddenly seemed to be on the verge of a fit of laughter.
"And who they will take as guilty for this? Me, who was just trying to do his job to chase after the White warrior; or the nurses who were trying to get in my way and protect a criminal, huh?" Amelia got silent at that question, giving a step back for the first time in that conversation.
"And as far as I know, you are on thin ice with both, Rolvur and Catrina. Do you really think that they would lose the chance to wipe you from Halden? Please, don’t be naive, head nurse."
Amelia was left without any outs. She was cornered. There was no way to keep arguing when both knew that she lost.
The woman, however, wasn’t paying attention to him, but for a moving spot in her peripheral vision.
While they conversed, Casper walked crouching through the place, rounding the Ridire. He was with a scalpel in his right hand, and with his left hand without any weapon.
His steps were silent. Just like the Ridire, or even better, he slid through the place. His usual powerful and outstanding presence was now as noticeable as an ant wandering around. The usually imposing White warrior was now as tiny as them.
He made sure to let Amelia notice his movements, and she got the signal, starting to walking backward and distracting the Ridire.
She just stopped to retrieve when her waist hit the edge of the bed where Alfar was.
"Ok. I will. I will tell you." She said, slowly.
"Hurry up!" The man shouted in response, walking some steps forward as well, seeming more violent each second that passed.
Whoever, the commandant was not losing his head. On the contrary, he knew exactly what he was doing. That was just a technique to raise the tension and pressure more and more, forcing someone to get desperate.
Casper couldn’t act boldly, because that warrior was aware of what was going on in his surroundings, and he probably guessed that Casper was somewhere in that room as well.
The White warrior tightened the grip on the scalpel, also letting his free hand ready.
"He is waiting for an attack from everywhere. I am sure of it. So that’s exactly what I will do."
The White warrior got closer to his back, as much as he could, then used his legs as springs, jumping towards that man.
As if he knew that it could happen, the Ridire turned towards him with his rifle ready to fire at any time.
Casper was faster, though, and soon the scalpel was stuck at the Ridire’s belly.
The warrior gazed at him, first with surprise, but this surprise turned into irony.
"What’s it, White warrior? Don’t you know what’s a bulletproof vest? Or you don’t know that a scalpel will not be enough to surpass it?"
He had put the rifle aside, letting it fall on the floor. With his right hand, he held Casper’s left arm, which was pressing the scalpel against his belly, don’t letting him retrieve.
With another hand, he reached the pistol in his waist.
"Your lose..." He started to say, but in no time a scalpel came cutting the air in his direction and pierced his left eye.
He let go of Casper at that exact moment and stepped back, reaching his hands to his eye and taking off the scalpel from there.
"You forgot to hold the two arms, you idiot. Never let a soldier’s arm free and totally usable. That’s a beginner’s mistake." He mocked, getting closer to the Ridire and kicking hard his chest, making him fall on his back on the floor. Then, he followed to another kick at his jaw, making him pass out.
Casper picked up his gun, attaching it at his back with the gun bandolier. He also grabbed the holster and pistol, wearing it.
The soldier turned to Amelia, hurrying her.
"Amelia, move on! I don’t know how much time Alfar has left."
"I know! I am a professional, no need to say something I already know!" She began to act again, and the nurses around her did the same, helping her with the procedure.
The action was intense overall. It was a difficult wound to treat, since it involved the organs, and one was already harmed.
In the White warrior’s world, that man could be considered already a dead person. The situation there wasn’t good at all. It was hopeless... But not for the district’s medicine.
Even so, the nurses passed for a tough time. In the end, they weren’t doctors. Their experience with delicate procedures like that wasn’t null, but nothing compared to a doctor of course.
Casper was still operating the system of the prison with his master key, but he never stopped paying attention to what was happening there. He also was feeling the pressure and was sweating buckets.
Watch all of that and don’t know what to do was just agonizing.
In the end, they could stabilize Alfar’s condition. An organ was indeed harmed in that shot, but they could pull through and save him when he was on the edge.
"Ok, his body condition is just as good as it needs to be to apply the medication. Let’s do this!" Amelia shouted, cheering them up. The nurses were looking tired and about to collapse. It was a lot of pressure they were receiving there after all.
They, then, quickly prepared the syringes and applied odin to their veins. It had an immediate effect as they predicted. The two of them started to convulse slightly. However, instead of stop after some moments, just like Casper did, Alfar and Olaf kept struggling on top of the bed.
"Damn! They didn’t react well to the drug!" Amelia cursed, punching a near device beside her.
"W-what do we do!? Do we try to cut odin’s effect or..."
"Hell no! Are you kidding me!? We can’t do this, otherwise, they will not recover..." Amelia was struggling to think of something that they could do to overcome that tough situation.
Casper finished what he needed to do there, but soon his predictions became reality because footsteps could be heard very close to the corridors near the infirmary.
He drew the rifle, putting his finger on the trigger and walking towards the entrance door.
The White warrior was limping, and Amelia could notice it. She saw that he wasn’t walking properly with his left leg. It was the ankle he had cracked before.
"W-why do the drug didn’t heal it? Or... when he was carrying those two, he pushed himself so hard that it hurt faster than it healed?" She was amazed by Casper’s idiocy but also determination.
"Hey, White warrior." She called, slowly.
Casper turned to her, worn off his mask, and attached it to his waist.
"What’s it?" His tone was serious, and even a bit hurried.
"Your ankle..."
He looked to his injured ankle, thinking.
"Do you have another alternative?" Amelia shook her head, seeming dejected.
"Don’t worry... I will not move too much for now, so everything will be just ok. Please, focus on stabilizing these two." He then continued walking.
