Chapter 29 - Burdens and Resolutions

Ark could feel the familiar cold sensation of the rain bathing his skin the moment he left the center.

His hair was soaked within seconds, the water dripping down from his now wet hair, down to his face and onto his shirt.

The rain as incessant as ever was rather cold this night, and the sound of the water making contact with the ground sounded like a lullaby to the vexed boy.

He continued to trod through the rain, heading towards his house.

It was one thing to start off poor from the very beginning, but it was another thing to have actually lived a good life only to have it stripped away.

Ark had not always been this desperate, he was not always in this state.

There was a time when he lived a decent life, a time when he had an actual family... But all that changed when his mother went missing.

He couldn't even remember how long ago it was and these days he often found himself forgetting her face.

That was the turning point of his life, the moment his life turned to shit.

A cat hurriedly hopped over his foot and ran underneath the shade of a building but Ark barely spared it a glance.

Since the day he found out what the sudden mark that had appeared underneath his eyes was, he had anticipated this very moment, and now he had reached it.

Only to be faced with disappointment.

Ark fell to a knee, staring up at the beating rain that made it progressively harder to keep his eyes open.

"What is the point?"

"ARGHHHHHHH!" He screamed at the top of his voice, but the shout was muffled by the rain.

The few people around him hurriedly left, thinking he would lunge at them at any moment.

Ark kept his gaze on the sky and that was when a strange voice reached him.

'And so what?'

It was strange, Ark could not tell whose voice it was, whether it was his voice or the voice of another person but those three simple words brought him a kind of strange relief.

"So what huh?"

So what if he was going to die? So what if he was not going to have a long life?

"So fucking what?!"

A small laugh escaped his lips.

'The plan won't change, will it?'

What he wanted to do was enjoy a good life, so what if he died early? He would still enjoy as much time as he had now.

He would enjoy the present and let the future worry about itself, that was the way he could live with this burden.

Come to think of it...

'I don't even know how long it would take.'

Was it years? Months? Weeks?

Just like roulette...

You never know when you're going to die.

"Boom!"

It would be his sweet surprise.

Then he scoffed. Of course he wasn't that crazy... I mean, who really wants to die early?

"Like hell I'm going to let some fancy writing take me down."

"New goal." Ark rose to his feet.

Maybe it was the rain, or maybe it was that strange voice but Ark felt strangely relieved.

He raised his hand into the air, watching as little by little, the rain accumulated in his palms.

"... I'm going to break the blight, no matter what it takes."

Now he had two goals: enjoy as much as he can and break the blight.

Ark snickered to himself, "Looks like I'm finally getting a bit more motivated."

He considered going back to the center but decided against it, although he had pushed the thought of the blight to the very corner of his mind he was in no mood to return.

It was still dinner time and considering how angry he was, going back to meet with people who were bound to infuriate him wasn't exactly wise.

The Ark suddenly froze as he remembered what had transpired.

'What the hell were you thinking?!'

Ark grabbed onto his wet hair, almost pulling it in frustration.

"I dislocated his ankle, didn't I? And right in front of everyone..."

How was he supposed to lie his way around it if everyone present saw what happened?

Ark let out a sigh as he continued his journey. His plan was to quickly make it back home, check if his father was back and quickly make it back to the center.

He boarded the water train shortly after only to be met by more disgusted looks than the first time.

That was because he was dripping wet, staining the train floor with water.

There were fewer people on the train since it was nighttime and the journey back home was rather uneventful.

The old worn out wooden Door leading to the house swung open, revealing the interior. Ark stared around before taking a cautious step into the room.

Just as he took the first step into his house, he was blinded by an extremely bright light pointed straight at his face.

"Who the hell are you?" There was a slight pause. "Ark? What are you doing sneaking in like a thief?"

Ark heard something heavy drop to the wooden floor with a loud thump.

That undefined object would have no doubt its way to its head if his father had t bothered to check.

"I'm just here to check on you... considering what happened."

The man gave him a blank stare before sitting down on the couch and taking a long swing off the beer bottle.

"What about the beast?"

"Dead."

Ark waited for more but it was obvious that the man was not going to say any more.

"How did you do it? And how did you know where I was... were you following me?"

The man gave him an angry stare. "None of your business."

Normally at this point, Ark would have given up, but armed with strange boldness, he stood his ground and continued questioning the man.

His father... was a stubborn man.

At the end of the day, Ark got nothing, he left his house with even more questions than he had come with.

This was because now it was very obvious that his father knew far more than he let on.

That day, the beast did not phase him one bit, in fact, he seemed confident while fighting it when any normal person's reaction would have been to grab his child and run.

He stood and not only fought but claimed to have killed it... killed that thing?!

Ark could still remember its ominous presence and chilling strength.

'How did he kill something like that?'

There were no answers for him that night, only silence.

Ark boarded the train for the second time today and began his walk to the wielder's center after being dropped off at the station, his mind filled with questions.

Unlike last time when he practically sprinted to the center, Ark decided to take the regular road, far too cautious about encountering the creature once more, or an angry family member...

'Dinner should be over by now...' he thought, thinking back to the food he had not eaten.

The streets had gotten a little more quiet with fewer cars and people, the street lights were also on, their light transforming the raindrops underneath them to golden sparkles.

It took only a second for that serene atmosphere to be torn to shreds.

Ark was immediately blinded by a sudden ray of intense light, as a car that had been going perfectly straight careened to the side, right next to him.

The driver's headlamps had been off and they only turned it on when they were far too close, blinding Ark in the process.

He swiftly jumped to the side, but it was already too late.

Boom!

The car crashed right into his gut, knocking the wind out of him and tossing his body high up into the air.

Ark collapsed with a sickening crunch.

The serene night had swiftly transformed into a night of madness.
