Divine Magus: Awakening-Chapter 46: The Outside World
Chapter 46: The Outside World
Waiting for Orion, Logan briefly tried to remember what happened during his royal duel.
As far as he knew, he had cast a C-rank spell yet he had no recollection of such taking place.
Noticing his drifting thoughts, Logan shook his head vehemently to stop them.
After about fifteen minutes of preparation, Orion was ready and met Logan in front of the main academy.
Orion had on a thick overcoat, Logan could bet that there were blades inside.
"So do you know how to leave this place?" Orion nudged Logan.
Taking in a deep breath, "No. Let’s go ask." He replied before returning to the headmaster’s office.
Knocking on the door, they waited for a response before entering.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of having you visit me? Again." The life Magus asked looking at them.
"We just wanted to ask how to leave the academical premises." Orion replied on Logan’s behalf while performing an awkward bow.
Letting out a short laugh, The life Magus tapped a small button on his table.
Logan and Orion alike could hear the sound of rotating machinations.
A small window opened up on the side of the wall.
Slowly yet fluidly, a teleportation ring rolled out on a conveyor.
"While this is my personal teleportation ring, I’ll let you use it this one time but only on the condition that you don’t tell anyone about it." The life Magus stated his condition.
"Of course sir, we agree. Right Logan?" Orion jabbed Logan with his elbow.
"Yes sir, we agree." Logan nodded while rubbing his ribs.
"So where do you want to go?" Victor asked the two of them.
"As far up north in the kingdom as we can be taken." Orion responded calmly.
Victor was about to ask the reason but decided otherwise.
With a wave of his hand, pure golden runes appeared on and around the teleportation ring.
"It’s ready. Just step on." The headmaster went back to focusing on other important things.
Stepping on the ring, Logan felt the familiar distortion of space around him before he was thrown into a green prairie surrounded by a thick forest.
’What is with my life and forests?’ Logan had a random thought.
Space twisted behind him again and Orion was thrown out.
"Man this teleportation ring is far more violent than those in the main academy." Orion complained as he rubbed his shoulders that had hit the ground with a bit of force.
With a stretched hand, Logan pulled Orion to his feet before jabbing him in the ribs.
The latter feel to his knees clutching his sides.
"Why??!!!" Orion mock cried.
"Doesn’t feel nice, does it? That’s how it felt when you did it to me a few minutes ago." Logan raised an eyebrow as he crossed his arms.
"You kept that in your head? You’re far more petty than I thought." Orion stood up observed where they were.
Taking a few steps forward, Logan felt a strong yet soft wind hit his face.
In this place, he felt lighter and better than ever before.
He felt free but with it came the realization of how tight the invisible chains on his life were.
The kingdom and their policies that seemed to favor only nobility and the crown.
The dangerous interest of people about his streaklessness.
And now even the soul king. Everything just felt choking.
"We are close to the northern towns in the kingdom. It’ll still be a few weeks travel before we can get to our destination." Orion sighed before looking at Logan.
"How about we head to town and spend the night? We need to be well rested to start the mission right?" Orion let out a sky smile.
There was all possibility that he was just trying to delay the start of the actual journey.
Sighing, Logan reluctantly agreed.
He wasn’t the type that was acquainted with staying in towns.
Technically he had stayed in one for most of his life but all that he went through at their hands taught him an unforgettable lesson.
Without much ceremony, they walked out of the prairie and into the forest that surrounded it.
"How exactly would you find the metal you’re looking for?" Logan decided to address the doubt that he had.
"It’s the same way that I know the direction of the town we’re headed to. It’s a spell that allows me to become an organic metal detector." Orion replied with his eyes still focused on the path ahead of them.
They walked and navigated through the the forest undisturbed until...
As they jumped over a fallen log, Logan’s legs started to shake a bit.
The anomaly attracted his attention. With each step he took forward, the shaking became stronger.
The shaking slowly turned into immense wariness that permeated his entire body.
He grabbed Orion and pulled him back immediately.
A massive brown body slammed it’s body into where Orion was a second ago.
The body slowly revealed itself and with it its status as a bear type beast.
It raised it front paws and slammed them into the ground sending ripples through the earth.
"Earth element. D-rank. Thick hide. Powerful bite force and strong limbs." Logan muttered what he knew about the beast and bears in general.
"A D-rank beast huh?" Orion stepped forward and put his hands to the side.
Blades left the overcoat he had on and circled around him.
"Let me see how well I’d fair against it." The blades moved, converging on the bear.
The beast in question jumped up a little bit. The height it attained was not going to be enough to avoid the attack.
Yet Logan didn’t let his guard down. His legs still filled him with a sense of dread and there must’ve been a reason for that.
And as if hearing his thoughts, something unexpected happened.
As the bear landed on the ground, it gave way and the bear vanished from their sights.
The ground had literally swallowed it up.
The fear spiked in Logan and the shadows exploded consuming him.
He appeared some distance away.
The ground gave way and the bear swung its front paws at where Logan had been.
Noticing both what the bear and Logan had done, Orion let out a small chuckle.
"How could I think the mere loss of your mana core would diminish your lethality?" He threw his head back laughing.
Stopping his laughter, Orion called back his blades and returned them to their sheaths.
"Now." His face steeled and his teeth clenched.
"Let’s kill this thing." Orion waved his hands and the sphere Logan had seen earlier flew out and hovered beside him.
Muttering a bunch of incoherent words, a pulse of mana left Orion’s body.
The sphere absorbed part of the mana and rippled.
Slowly yet certainly, it chained into a long, thin needle.
The bear vanished into the ground again.
"Not this time." Orion spoke firmly before sending the needle to Logan who caught it.
Placing his hands on the ground, Orion cast one of the few earth spells he knew and the ground pulsed.
It rippled and spat out the bear.
Mid air, Logan appeared in a mass of shadows and plunged the needle through its eyes and its brain.
Its body fell limp and dead.
Logan stared at Orion who was pale. He had cast an earth spell and paid the price with his mana.
’My legs now seem to have a form of instincts guiding them. Mr. Joe mentioned that the procedure doesn’t alter the nature of my body so this shouldn’t be happening.’ Logan quickly pondered.
’It seems that Mr. Joe and I need to have a talk.’ He surmised.
Before Logan or Orion could react, a figure ran out of the deeper part of the forest.
The young man had brown hair with black streaks and bright blue eyes. He appeared scared and wary of the people in front of him.
He had on torn clothes smeered with blood.
In his right hand was a crudely made spear.
He gripped it tighter as he continued to stare at them. It was as though he was determining the possibility of having to fight them.
’I wonder how long he has been here.’ Orion pondered while Logan just studied the boy in silence.
"Who are you?" Orion asked the person who appeared to be roughly their age.
He opened his mouth and closed it.
"Tell us who you are. You can trust us." Orion pointed at himself then at Logan.
Looking at the latter, Orion could see Logan glaring at the boy like he was going to hurt him.
"Me. You can trust me." Orion corrected himself as soon as he realized his mistake of relying on Logan to be friendly.
Opening his mouth, the boy finally spoke.
"I am..." He paused and took in a deep breath.
"I am the crown prince."
