Doctor and His Glamorous Sister-in-Law-Chapter 734 - 737: Missed the Target
The conversation came to an abrupt halt as Shi Junya strode over with purpose.
Addressing everyone, he said, "This mission is very serious, so I expect your full commitment! Treat it with the utmost seriousness!"
At this, Shi Junya paused, his gaze shifting to Liu Ergou.
"I want to make this perfectly clear. Some of you are Loose Cultivators, so you must understand the rules. No reckless behavior. If you cause trouble, I will hold you personally accountable!"
Standing among the agents, Liu Ergou couldn't help but smack his lips. Shi Junya's last remark was clearly directed at him. However, Liu Ergou said nothing. After all, the man was from the Inspection Bureau and a colleague of Fu Ya's, so he felt obligated to show some respect.
Liu Ergou simply stood in line. After the meeting, he and Han Jiajia returned to the car to begin their stakeout.
Time ticked by, and an hour passed in the blink of an eye.
Initially, Liu Ergou was full of energy and chatted non-stop with Han Jiajia. But as they talked, drowsiness crept in, and he couldn't help but let out a massive yawn.
Seeing his state, Han Jiajia said quietly, "Er Gou, if you're too tired, you should rest for a bit."
"I heard the chief say we might be on this stakeout for several hours."
Liu Ergou shook his head, rejecting Han Jiajia's suggestion.
"Forget it, Jia Jia," Liu Ergou said. "Shi Junya already has it out for me. If he finds out I fell asleep, there's no telling what else he'd say."
"I don't want to get chewed out for no reason!"
Saying this, Liu Ergou stretched wide, forcing himself to be alert, and sat up straight again.
Another half-hour passed. Just as Liu Ergou felt he couldn't hold on any longer, the walkie-talkie crackled to life.
"Target spotted! Everyone in position! Proceed according to the plan!"
The walkie-talkie went silent. Han Jiajia and Liu Ergou got out of the car and joined the team.
The raid was to take place in an abandoned, three-story residential building. By now, it was broad daylight, and the visibility was perfect for the operation.
Just then, Han Jiajia suddenly grabbed Liu Ergou and said sternly, "Er Gou, don't rush in. Just stay behind me."
"Only act if we're at a clear disadvantage. Otherwise, stay out of it."
"Got it?"
Knowing this wasn't the time to play the hero, Liu Ergou nodded and stayed close behind Han Jiajia.
Soon, the group infiltrated the abandoned building. Everyone wore a grave expression as they tiptoed forward.
Within moments, they had cleared the first floor, but they hadn't seen a single person. There wasn't even a sign of recent activity.
This made Liu Ergou frown.
Han Jiajia also realized something was amiss. She thought about reporting it, but then it occurred to her that if she could notice it, surely the others had as well. So, Han Jiajia dismissed the idea and continued to search the second floor with the team.
They hadn't been searching the second floor for long when Han Jiajia suddenly tensed, grabbing Liu Ergou and signaling him to stop. The other agents also halted in unison, as if by unspoken agreement, and began to slowly retreat.
The sudden retreat left Liu Ergou confused, but before he could ask what was happening, a sharp metallic sound echoed through the silent building.
CLANG!
This is bad! Liu Ergou thought.
The other retreating agents heard the noise as well. As one, their expressions turned ugly. They immediately abandoned their retreat and rushed toward the third floor at breakneck speed.
Halfway up the stairs, a voice suddenly drifted down from above.
"Tsk, you're all much slower than I expected. I've been waiting here for a good hour already!"
"You're cautious, I'll give you that, but not careful enough. You didn't even spot the tripwire I set. How disappointing."
As his voice faded, a man began descending the stairs. He had an ordinary face and his clothes were exceedingly plain. His eyes, however, were incredibly sharp, making it hard for anyone to look at him directly.
When Han Jiajia saw the man, she immediately whispered to Liu Ergou, "Er Gou, that's him! The Ancient Martial Artist who can dodge bullets!"
"But how did he know we were coming? What's going on?"
While Han Jiajia was still trying to figure it out, the man pulled a button-sized object from his pocket and displayed it for all to see.
"But honestly," he said, "you've got some tricks, managing to stick a tracker on me!"
"If I hadn't run into this sort of thing before, I might have actually fallen for it."
"Good thing I'm experienced!"
With that, the man crushed the tracker in front of them all.
At the same time, the team leader, Shi Junya, bellowed.
"Everyone, open fire! Fire now!"
The next second, a dense volley of gunfire erupted within the abandoned building, continuing for a full minute before it finally stopped.
By the time the shooting ceased, Liu Ergou's ears were ringing intensely. Even so, he could vaguely hear Shi Junya's voice.
Shi Junya sneered at the empty space ahead. "So what if you can dodge bullets?"
"No matter how skilled you are, you're still made of flesh and blood. You can dodge one bullet, two bullets, three bullets."
"I refuse to believe you can dodge a barrage like that!"
"Unless you're in the Houtian Realm, there's absolutely no way."
Shi Junya's words had barely faded when the man's voice echoed from above again.
"And how do you know I'm not in the Houtian Realm?"
"Judging by your tone and your words, you must be from the Inspection Bureau, right?"
"I'm a bit curious. Since when did the Inspection Bureau hire people as careless as you?"
"Or has the Bureau simply declined over the years?"
With that, the man walked down the stairs once more. His clothes were completely intact, without so much as a speck of dust on them.
From a distance, Liu Ergou immediately understood. So that's what happened. They opened fire too soon. The moment the shooting started, he must have ducked back upstairs, letting all the bullets hit an empty space.
Fuck!
