Chapter 778: 777 falls apart
The corridor, long and desolate, with glaring white walls and ghastly pale light, blurs the boundaries, seemingly extending endlessly to the end of the world.
Involuntarily, I lightened my footsteps, but the rustling sounds still echoed in the eerily silent space, as a sinister chill crept up my arms, causing goosebumps to madly emerge and hair to stand on end.
From a distance, Li Wei immediately spotted Jenna.
The woman who was always elegant and calm, no matter how tired, pained, or helpless, her hair neatly done, her clothes always clean. Her slender shoulders, like poplar trees, remained ramrod straight, proudly bearing the onslaught of life’s storms, never once misplacing her composure.
But now, she hunched over in her chair, shoulders seemingly collapsed under a weight they could no longer bear, her hair at the temples messily breaking free from its confines, her eyes spiritlessly fixed ahead, devoid of any energy.
Her complexion pale, her eyes red-rimmed, her cracked lips split open with crevices, flaking with dead skin, but now it seemed irrelevant.
A mere silhouette, yet it was too painful to look at.
Kelsey came to a screeching halt, turning away, unable to bear the sight; Mahomes felt helpless as he gazed at Jenna, not knowing how to assist her.
Li Wei took a deep breath to regain composure, approached Jenna, and carefully squatted in front of her, seeking out her eyes in the void, softly calling out to her.
“Jenna?”
However, Jenna did not respond. Even as Li Wei was right before her, her eyes remained unfocused, as if she saw through him to some vacant abyss above—
Unable to see the soul.
Those eyes were merely acidic, but not a single tear was visible.
Li Wei could hardly contain his sorrow—he didn’t even want to disturb Jenna, feeling it cruel; yet was it any better to let Jenna lose herself in grief? He was just as uncertain.
In the end, Li Wei gently patted Jenna’s knee.
Jenna flinched, gasping for air, her gaze frantically searching as if she were a startled butterfly, finally settling on Li Wei’s face in a panic, desperately clinging to a glimmer of light in the darkness, her lips dryly curling into a strained smile.
A glimmer of hope ignited in those red eyes.
“Ah, Li Wei…”
“Li Wei! You’re here, Annie… Annie has been waiting for you.”
“Annie? Annie? Li Wei is here, Annie!”
Jenna was frantically searching around, unable to focus her eyes, like a drowning person, calling out in a frenzy, thrashing at the water.
All Li Wei felt was heartache.
Li Wei quickly patted Jenna’s arm again, calming her down.
“Don’t worry, I’ll find Annie.”
“Do you remember? Annie loves hide-and-seek, always expecting us to find her. I’m best at that, leave it to me.”
Jenna seemed confused, uncertain, but she still convinced herself, “Annie likes it. Annie likes it. I know, Annie loves it the most.”
She repeated time and again, then sat quietly in the same spot, rocking back and forth, murmuring to herself.
Li Wei couldn’t bear it, standing up to turn around and saw Jeff standing at the doorway of the ward.
Jeff was wiping his eyes, using the palms and backs of his hands to clear away his tears and snot all at once, though he still looked haggard.
“Sorry, Jenna… she… ”
Jeff tried to explain, tried to apologize, but the words choked in his throat, hanging there, unresolved.
Li Wei nodded slightly with a look that stopped Jeff from continuing to explain and glanced into the ward, “What happened?”
Jeff turned following Li Wei’s gaze, took a deep breath without letting it out, and his hand went up to scratch his hair vigorously.
“The cancer has spread.”
“Her condition worsened, began attacking her internal organs, then her heart, until her body couldn’t take it anymore.”
“Annie… was in unimaginable pain, but she didn’t cry or scream, she just worried about me and Jenna…”
“Oh, God…”
Jeff’s words also broke down, as he tried with all his might to control himself, taking deep breaths, over and over, his entire body tensed up, but the pain firmly seized his heart, beyond what words could ever convey.
“Three hours? Or four hours? Or was it six hours?”
“I… I don’t remember… I wished Annie could keep growing up, but now… at least Annie is no longer in pain…”
“Oh, Jesus Christ, I can’t, I just… I just can’t…”
Jeff, no longer mindful of decorum, turned to face the wall, just standing there, stunned, leaving only his trembling back in view.

Li Wei’s heart was gripped tight.
He couldn’t imagine the pain and torment Annie had gone through, the scenes depicted in a few words suffocated him.
Maybe, they shouldn’t have been so surprised.
Remember? The chance meeting between Li Wei and Annie.
Felix said that one of his friends, whose condition was worsening, wished to meet with Li Wei, and Li Wei agreed, that friend was Annie.
From that moment, Annie’s condition had already been quite terrible.
But.
Ever since they met, Annie had always been full of life, bursting with vibrancy, showing no signs of sickness or suffering, making them completely forget the truth, that Annie had always been fighting cancer, taking her brief vitality for granted as part of her everyday life.
Until one day, she could endure no more.
This reality hit Li Wei hard, freezing him in place, as he tried to clench his fists, but found his fingers immovable.
Suddenly, Jeff turned around to look at Li Wei, and tried to say something, but couldn’t manage it and once again turned to face the wall, muttering to himself.
“I should have taken her to the game, I should have fulfilled her wish, I’m just… I’m just so selfish, I just wanted her to be alright, I wanted to see her jumping around, and then trapped her in a warm house, but that didn’t help…”
“It damn well didn’t help at all, I… I shouldn’t have stopped her…”
Over and over again.
Again and again.
Those jumbled emotions churned inside him, tormenting his nerves.
Despair. Regret. Pain. Confusion. Struggle.
Jeff was falling apart, bit by bit, and Li Wei couldn’t help him.
Li Wei took a deep breath, “Jeff, may I go in to see Annie?”
Jeff hurriedly turned, “Of course. Of course! Annie must be waiting for you.” His gaze never lingered, and he turned back to face the wall once more.
Li Wei tried to offer Jeff some consolation.
But suddenly, he realized that, in this moment, any consolation, any persuasion, was feeble and might even be cruel, for they were still immersed in their grief, still steeped in their pain, not yet ready to accept and digest it, how could they possibly forget?
Even a simple “hang in there” might become an overwhelming burden.
Because no one knew what pain Mr. and Mrs. Galas had gone through, no one knew how agonizing this moment was for them, they had no more strength to keep going, they just needed some time and space, to drift in their sorrow, and that was enough.
Those light words held no power in the face of true sadness and agony.
