Chapter 837: 836 Final Farewell

The black coffin lay there quietly, serene and peaceful. Only the sound of rain surged in the air, and the world had never been so silent.

Jenna thought she had prepared herself mentally, but as she watched the scene before her, her Annie was now eternally at rest, with not a single friend by her side.

This reminded Jenna that, during Annie’s brief life, most of her time had been spent in the hospital. Patients, doctors, and nurses became her entire world. She had no opportunity to make friends, no chance to see the outside world; she didn’t even have the chance to step outside the boundaries of Missouri.

It shouldn’t have been this way. Annie’s world should have been so much more.

At this thought, Jenna was overcome with sorrow.

Turning her head hastily, Jenna buried her face in Jeff’s shoulder, trying to hide her tears.

After the Conference Championships, she had promised Annie that she would no longer grieve, no longer immerse herself in the past to the point of being unable to move forward. She was ready to live again and refused to let sorrow suffocate her any longer.

She made that promise.

But today, standing before the coffin, she found herself unable to hold it together.

“Jenna…” Jeff gently patted her on the shoulder, softly calling her name.

Jenna scrambled to wipe her eyes, trying to cover up her disheveled and distraught state. “I’m fine. I’m fine. Cough. I’m okay, don’t worry.”

Jeff, “No, Jenna, look, over there… is that Li Wei?”

Jenna froze. “Li Wei? How could it be…”

But before she could finish her sentence, the words were caught in her throat.

A tall, slender figure, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, walked solemnly through the light drizzle with a black umbrella in hand.

His face was obscured under the umbrella, unclear and indistinct. From his broad shoulders and long legs, one could only make out a hint of his tall and upright stature, leaving no way to identify him with certainty.

Yet, this figure effortlessly drew everyone’s gaze.

He approached.

Closer.

The umbrella tilted slightly upward, and that clean, refined face came into view. The faint drizzle gradually outlined the sharp contours of his ink-black brows and deep-set eyes.

Who else could it be but Li Wei?

A gasp.

Jenna opened her mouth but made no sound, standing rooted to the spot, unable to believe her eyes. Her mind couldn’t process the sight before her.

Why was Li Wei here?

After the Conference Championships and before the Super Bowl, the league had a one-week break for rest and adjustments. Both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams had days off, allowing players to relax their taut nerves. However, full relaxation was not an option, as the upcoming championship was the real focus.

Due to this, players usually spent time with family and friends, loosening up slightly without fully unwinding, before reporting back to their teams to prepare for the biggest game of the year.

Jenna didn’t want to take up Li Wei’s time with his family. Annie had told her that Li Wei’s parents still worked in New York and hadn’t retired early. They lived apart most of the time, making every holiday they spent together extraordinarily precious.

Jenna also didn’t want to disrupt the team’s preparation routine. Including herself, they were all eagerly anticipating the Super Bowl. She believed Annie was as well. Annie must be in heaven right now, gearing up with excitement for the Super Bowl.

So Jenna hadn’t informed Li Wei.

But—

The patter of rain on the umbrella drew nearer and nearer until Li Wei’s footsteps stopped not far away. He didn’t come too close, maintaining a respectful distance.

“Hey, Jenna, Jeff.”

Li Wei raised his voice to greet them. Nearby, a few murmurs of surprise rippled through the group, as no one could believe Li Wei had appeared before their eyes just like that.

Li Wei gave a polite nod to them, then turned back to look at Jenna.

“Sorry to show up uninvited. I hope I’m not disrupting the peacefulness of the ceremony.”

Jenna waved her hands quickly.

“I just…” Li Wei hesitated slightly. “I just wanted to come and say goodbye to Annie. You know, this is the last opportunity.”

Jenna tried to explain why she hadn’t informed Li Wei, but the words lingered on her lips before dissipating. In the end, she swallowed them all.

The reason no longer mattered. What mattered was that Li Wei was here now.

“Of course, you’re welcome,” Jenna said. “I mean, seeing you here—Annie would be so happy. I should be the one thanking you.”

Li Wei offered a polite smile. “Annie once told me her biggest regret was not being able to go to school, not being able to make more friends. Even at her funeral, she thought perhaps no friends would attend.”

“So I thought…”

“I know it’s a bit presumptuous, but hey, I’m Annie’s friend. I couldn’t miss the chance to say goodbye to her.”

Li Wei’s voice quietly cut through the sound of rain.

Jenna’s eyes instantly reddened. She quickly took a deep breath to steady herself, then gave a big smile. “Of course. You are absolutely Annie’s friend. Thank you for coming to bid her farewell.”

“Thank you.”

A thousand words condensed into just one sentence.

Li Wei hesitated slightly before looking at Jenna. “Jenna, it’s not just me. Some other Chiefs players also wanted to come and say goodbye to Annie.”

Jenna froze. “Others?”

Li Wei nodded gently. “Jenna, Annie wasn’t just my friend.”

“We understand this is a private funeral, and you might not want others intruding. If that’s the case, I can represent them and extend our respects. They can leave after that—we just wanted to express our thoughts.”

But only if it wouldn’t disturb the Gallas family’s private time.

After speaking, Li Wei brought out his left hand, which he had kept behind him. In it was a single lily, elegant and pure white, its petals cloaked in a fine mist of raindrops. Standing still, his gaze rested on the coffin before him.

Jenna was taken aback. She hadn’t expected this at all.

She looked up at Jeff in a daze, seeking confirmation with her eyes.

Jeff gave a small nod. “Annie would have liked it.”

Jenna thought about it seriously. “Of course. If you all want to come, I think… Annie would be happy. She’s always loved the company of a lively crowd.”

Li Wei smiled. “That’s classic Annie Gallas, isn’t it? When we’re all frazzled and losing our minds, she’d be standing off to the side, watching us flail, plotting her next prank.”

Involuntarily, both Jenna and Jeff started to laugh as well.

At that moment, Li Wei turned toward the cemetery’s entrance and raised the lily high in his left hand, swaying it side to side as a signal.

Then, drawing his gaze back, Li Wei stepped forward to the coffin. His eyes lingered quietly on its surface. Although Annie’s face was no longer visible, at least he could bid her one final farewell:

Hey, Annie, we won.

Despite the world’s overwhelming silence, with only the sound of rain gently reverberating in his ears, Li Wei seemed to hear Annie’s vibrant cheers, her arms raised high as she jumped with joy, celebrating the victory.

Until the very point of exhaustion.

Breathing heavily, her face pale, while everyone around her looked on with worry and concern. Yet Annie would be the only one laughing heartily, saying, “Haha, you guys should’ve seen the looks on your faces.”

So uninhibited. So free. So rebellious and untamed.
