Chapter 37: Demonstration

Zen made a demand.

He asked Marlo to showcase the might of the greater beast by bullying Noa’s tiny creature.

The difference in size between the Graveworm and the Lantherion was one thing, but the sheer weight of mana pressure the latter radiated was another entirely.

Despite that, he still ordered one of his students to bully another beast.

Even his voice showed the ridicule, pride, and confidence that nothing could stop him in his class.

Noa, meanwhile, sighed.

’The first guy on my watchlist had to be a teacher, huh?’ he lamented and shook his head.

Offending instructors was the last thing he wanted.

Yet he had no intention of bowing to anyone here—teachers or higher-ups included.

But before that, Noa glanced at his roommate. Everything depended on his response. Would he oppose the teacher and take Noa’s side?

Or would he simply do as he was told?

’Show me what you are made of,’ Noa thought, observing the boy.

Marlo stood still.

For a moment, he said nothing and did nothing.

He glanced at his beast, then shifted from his calm, collected expression into a mischievous grin.

Then he turned his head toward Noa and muttered, "I am not doing that."

Zen’s brows twitched again.

He hadn’t expected defiance from the first year, especially for the Graveworm boy’s sake.

"I gave you a task, child," he said, his voice growing colder than before.

This time, Marlo looked up, meeting his piercing gaze with surprising confidence. "With all due respect, sir, I can’t attack my friend’s beast just to prove your point."

Silence fell.

Only occasional gasps filled the room.

Zen met his words calmly. But before he gave an answer of his own, Marlo cut in again, his voice carrying an obvious hint of mockery to the listeners.

"And these two aren’t the only ones who think that the tamer comes first before the beast. I, too, believe that one must be virtuous and talented to achieve true greatness.

The strength of a tamed creature is nothing but borrowed power. Yet most are too drunk on it to realize the truth."

His words cut through the air and reached everyone present.

Not silent, but loud laughter erupted into the classroom.

Noa, Thalia, and Marlo quickly became the center of attention, and almost everyone made fun of them.

"They are fanatics!"

"Is it some kind of cult? Perhaps they brainwashed them, and now they can’t think straight!"

"I think so too. Why would a sane person think like that? Borrowed power? If not for that strength, humans would have perished centuries ago."

The crowd went on with its rumblings.

Noa and Thalia, on the other hand, glanced at Marlo, who, despite getting intense stares, didn’t lower his head.

"I see you have balls to speak for yourself," Noa leaned in and whispered to the boy. "Now you can’t back down. You need to prove your point as well. Let’s see how weak you can remain with that beast."

Noa knew how difficult that task would be for Marlo.

Even if he didn’t invest much in the Lantherion or perform rituals for it, the creature would still grow.

Yes, it could never reach its true potential, but the survival instinct was there, and even without Marlo’s help, the serpent would still evolve a few times.

And that would be more than enough for Marlo’s plan to go down the drain.

However, he couldn’t just abandon his beast to rot, hoping it would never grow stronger.

Doing so would mean his own doom.

Mana poisoning was one of the scariest things a person might go through, and 99 out of 100 times, it ended with casualties on both sides.

"So," Zen started suddenly, "you are refusing an order from your instructor?"

Noa had an eerie feeling.

As if something bad was about to happen.

’Is it my augmented senses?’ he thought, casually activating Dragon’s Gaze to see mana fluctuations around the older man.

But he did it for a moment and deactivated before anyone could notice changes in his eyes.

’It’s not looking good,’ he realized.

Just then, Marlo nodded and replied, "I come here to learn. Not to be a pawn in your performance."

Hearing this, Zen wasn’t smiling anymore.

He adjusted his monocle and sighed.

Losing control of the class was where he drew the line. Especially because of the Graveworm boy.

"Very well," he said, flicking his fingers. "This is quite a reasonable development, I would say. But this place isn’t where the weak go to find glory."

Then, the air stood still.

Behind him, two halves of one creature emerged, each side radiating two separate elemental manas.

One half hovered with liquid metal, the other wrapped in raw mist.

The beast was massive, ethereal, and its sheer presence was enough to shake the walls.

"This is Veilchild," Zen declared proudly. "A rare-class familiar with the echo of double domains. And it’s going to show you what real dominance looks like."

With that, the man took one step forward.

The Veilchild followed him closely.

’Here it is,’ Noa thought, steadying himself. Then he glanced at Thalia and Marlo and murmured, "Let me handle him."

The former’s face lit up.

She knew Noa was about to prove his worth and make others shut their mouths.

The latter nodded, puzzled about what Noa would do in this situation.

He, however, waited for the oppressive mana to reach Ashe, calmness on his face never fading.

Only a second later did it happen.

Ferocious mana particles from the Veilchild found Graveworm, and its entire power crashed down on her like a tsunami.

It was domination. A clear attempt to prove one’s authority over the other.

Ashe remained still.

She couldn’t move or leave Noa’s side.

"You see that, right?" Zen said smugly. "A creature that can’t even try to defend itself has no place in this academy. The same goes for a foolish human who thinks he can change anything."

Amidst the looming peril and endless chaos, Noa smirked.

The beast before him... he knew it—its strengths, its weaknesses.

He even knew mana patterns that could subdue its stability without a force.
