Chapter 59: Boss Battle

The hall was larger than Noa had originally thought. The heavy breathing of the Rat King echoed through the chamber, shaking the ground slightly.

"Do we really have to fight?" Liz asked, fear evident on her face.

Thalia nodded with an unreadable expression.

According to her instincts, there was only one path they could take, and facing the Rat King was inevitable.

’It will be tough,’ Noa thought, noting the monster’s tough hide.

Still, he was motivated to do it.

Even his hands trembled with excitement, boiling his blood. He craved one more fight, and this enormous, corrupted beast was perfect to quench his hunger.

Its stench was unbearable.

The two girls covered their mouths, gagging.

Noa and Thalia’s eyes met. The former raised his blade, his voice remaining low. "We wake it, we kill it."

Thalia smiled at him.

Frost gathered around her hand, dropping the surrounding temperature.

Their tactic was straightforward.

Noa would approach it while the girl bombarded it from afar.

As for Liz and Lily, they were tasked with throwing everything they had at the monster, but honestly, neither Noa nor Thalia was counting on them.

"Be careful out there," Thalia warned.

Noa winked at her and took gentle, deliberate steps.

The only sound in the chamber was the rat’s breathing, but when Noa moved toward it, his footsteps echoed louder.

Before they could plan further, the beast stirred, its bloodshot eyes snapping open.

With a guttural screech, the Rat King stood up.

It looked even more massive than before, its blob of flesh towering over Noa. "Not good," he barely exclaimed.

Lily let out a yelp, while Liz clung to her sleeve.

Thalia, meanwhile, didn’t lose her composure and, instead of wasting time worrying about what to do, she sprang into action.

Her fingers touched snow mana particles.

She seemed gentle, caring even.

Yet when her control reached the desirable degree, she launched hardened snow and shaped it into a sharp spear in mid-air.

The world split in half.

Or at least the part of the air her attacks tore through and approached the monster at high speed.

Seeing this, Noa didn’t hesitate.

He couldn’t.

And just before Thalia’s spells touched the Rat King, he braced himself for the impact and dashed at the beast.

The spear struck first.

But he was also close, looking closely at how it shattered against the rat’s thick skin.

Still, it didn’t just stop there, and neither did he.

Without allowing his legs to rest even for a moment, Noa lunged at the monster, aiming for the spot where frost had spread across its shoulder.

Thalia’s attack slowed the beast down. Noa swung his sword before it cleaned the snow away.

’Shit,’ Noa screamed inwardly.

He hadn’t missed, yet the attack only left a shallow wound.

It still drew some blood.

Though it was nowhere near enough to take a beast of this size down, neither Noa nor Thalia planned to stop.

The girl was daring.

Instead of staying far from the direct combat, she closed the gap.

This time, her reach increased, allowing her to freeze the floor and air around the rat.

The ground would make moving difficult.

As for the air, it could reach the rat’s lungs to make breathing harder.

She also gathered more frost around her and sent big layers of it at Noa, coiling him with a decent shield.

It could tank at least one swipe from the rat.

But she could always create another and keep Noa safer that way.

He, however, dodged the tail that whipped the ground by ducking under it. Then he rolled to the side, and with the sword clutched in his hands, he stabbed upward.

Thankfully, Thalia’s snow had gotten thicker.

Every mana fragment except his shield avoided him and hindered the rat’s movement while also slowing its joints.

Noa’s strike hit the leg.

It lacked the power to sever it, but it was enough to make the monster stumble.

"Again!" he instructed, blurring momentarily.

Thalia blinked from one place to another, taking better spots to properly aim at the opponent. She was moving like a proper mage and didn’t leave a single opening for the beast.

Noa didn’t slack either.

After his first two attacks, his objective was to knock the rat down so they could target its belly.

It seemed like a softer part, and damaging the vital organs could end the battle faster.

As he jumped to cut its legs one more time, four more spears shot past him, slamming directly into the king’s knees.

She, too, had realized the same thing.

And without a single word, both of them came to a similar plan.

Snow also spread further this time.

Seeing the slowed rat, Noa dodged its claws, and with a tightened grip, shadows coiled to his blade, Ashe’s power flooding into him.

His gaze sharpened.

Blood surged faster into his veins, giving him the might of a small dragon.

The darkness swallowed him whole, hiding his presence from the enemy ahead, and in a single heartbeat, Noa struck the rat.

Again and again.

In one moment, he was slashing at it.

But before the monster found the chance to defend or counterattack, shadows claimed Noa.

The fight was too chaotic.

For the spectators, it seemed like he was moving too fast.

But in reality, he was using shadow particles to conceal his presence, and thanks to the advantageous environment, he was doing it with ease.

However, he was consuming too much mana.

His entire reserve would run out at any moment, and even with Ashe’s collected supply, he would lose his strength.

Being completely dry of mana was no joke.

It just meant he would be useless, because he would be too busy handling the pain and recovering the lost energy.

At least he was efficient.

With each strike, the rat stumbled more.

Every time he vanished, it only angered the monster further, and the moment it tried to change its aggro to Thalia, Noa would suddenly appear and attack again.

She also seized the chance.

Dozens of snow shards emerged behind her and rained down on the rat.

The attack was strong enough to hammer its back, giving both Noa and her more time to attack.

However, after sustaining damage, the Rat King roared in pain. Swinging both claws at once, it nearly flattened Noa to the ground.

He reacted quickly.

Forcing his hands to stay still, Noa intercepted the attack and then rolled aside.

A shadow trail was left behind, confusing the beast for a split second.

As a result, Noa and Thalia bombarded it with another wave of relentless assault. Some shards pierced the tough hide, others bounced off, while most dissolved instantly.

Nevertheless, they were the ones damaging the opponent and gaining the upper hand.

Soon, the monster crashed against the floor.

The world shook. The stone fell from the ceiling.

Its weight trembled the ground and sent vibrations across the entire tomb.

Seeing this, Thalia’s eyes narrowed. "The smaller ones," she called out. "They are coming to protect their king."

The two girls flinched.

For the first time, the fear didn’t just make them tremble but forced them to act.

Noa glanced at them. "Prove that you two are worthy, and I will help you to meet Selaira," he said, a mischievous grin darting to his face.

They flinched again.

Now, they exchanged glances and summoned their beasts.

Liz had a blue behemoth with two long horns, offering the girl the earth element with defensive abilities.

Lily, on the other hand, controlled the tangerine fox.

It granted her light as her elemental affinity, boosting her reflexes.

Neither of them knew any actual spell for combat, but they could at least manipulate mana and throw it at their enemies.

When the swarm of rats arrived, they were the ones to block the entrance.

Though Thalia closed the gap with snow and aided them, most of her focus rested on the main threat.

"Let’s finish it off," she said to Noa.

Then, her fingers flickered as she gathered large blobs of snow mana within her body and released them in quick succession.

Noa didn’t hold back either.

Although his damage output was less, he was attacking faster.

Thankfully, the Rat King was already on its back, giving them a better angle to aim than before.

Both Noa and Thalia used it splendidly.

Shadows weighing down Noa’s hands, while snow wrapped around him like a Christmas present, allowed him to attack without wasting time or energy on dodging.

Therefore, he had more chances to slash at the rat.

He wasn’t just doing it aimlessly, and after a full ten seconds of relentless assaults, the monster screamed in pain.

Noa had cut its stomach open.

Thalia immediately shifted her focus to strengthening the defense at the entrance, leaving him to deal the finishing blow.

He, meanwhile, didn’t linger for long and cut everything in sight.

The rat convulsed.

It swept wildly, yet its movements slowed momentarily.

The chamber fell silent.

Even the smaller rats stopped moving, looking at their monarch with incomprehensible expressions.

Noa ripped his sword free. He was panting heavily.

But he forced himself to move, afraid that the rat would release more poison in the air.

Thankfully, he made the right choice and avoided the toxins.

As for the smaller rats, they cried upon seeing that their king was already dead. Then they gave up and ran away, leaving the girls alone at the entrance.

Thalia smiled faintly. "We did it."

Noa nodded, waiting for something to change in the tomb.

His hunch was right. Again.

The room trembled as if the sky would fall, but after moments of silence, the floor cracked and split open.

[Ding!]

As something emerged from the ground, the system rang in Noa’s head.
