Either E Or S Class: I Will Kill All Vampires.-Chapter 33: Ch : The Gala [1].
’This is gonna be a lot harder than I thought.’
It was the last thought Levi had in mind before he stepped into the SUV.
In the lead car was one of the other elites, Zack, Claire and Mr Manhattan.
While in the second was a second elite, Jace, and finally Levi and Selene.
The SUV drove into the tarmac just before the familiar platform raised them into the sky. And then out of the sand.
The engines spurted to life once more before the cars drove from the desert in the city.
The drive was silent, apart from the silent whistle of the road and the rapidly changing scenery.
Levi stared out the window, the beautiful drifting lights from the city providing a perfect contrast from the underground base where he’d been living for over a month now.
He turned to Selene, whose hands were resting lazily on her thighs and eyes were fixed on the road.
With the panoramic view outside her window that made the side of her face light up with a strange yet satisfying glow when he glanced at her— which was often.
It was getting harder and harder not to reach for her hand and intertwine their fingers.
’Haa’
He laughed at himself internally, whatever he was feeling, whatever was stirring up within him could never calm the incessant thought that he had no idea if he could trust her.
He didn’t know if he could trust her but he knew deep down he wanted to, more than anything else.
The drive continued in silence until the elite who was driving more and more turns, signalling their driving was slowly coming to an end.
Just before they stopped before the gate, tall and imposing— the golden iron gate stood between twin lanterns that seemed more for decoration than purpose.
The gate remained for about five seconds before—
~Bzzrt.~
A sound emanated from the gates as the creaking iron opened up and granted them access into the estate.
But just before the elite continued the drive, Selene turned to Levi, sincerity dripping from her tone.
"Levi, I know you and I know this is a lot to ask but I need you to promise me you won’t pick a fight with anyone, you won’t do anything stupid and you won’t cause a scene."
Levi smirked.
"So you still have to ask me that, thought we knew each other better than that by now."
She sharpened her gaze, "Exactly so I know you and I know you have a problem... Just promise me okay."
’You’re gonna have to forgive me for this one.’
He locked eyes with her.
"I promise."
And with that the car rolled into the estate.
The lead car was already in and probably waiting for them in front.
The estate was nothing short of magnificent.
From the miles of trimmed hedges and lawns to koi ponds, a water sculpture fountain and lampposts lined up the polished stone driveway that led to the garage.
But even from faraway the mansion hung at the centre of it all like an omen or maybe a miracle... Lights radiating from the windows and terraces.
The stone driveway created a slight rumble as tires bounced subtly.
They finally stopped in front of the main entrance to the entrance hall where the gala would be held.
The valets opened their respective doors, they stepped out into the chilly night sky and tilted their heads to reach the top of the building. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Sleek lines, expansive glass walls, minimalist geometry— a beautiful blend of concrete, steel and natural stone.
Levi took a deep breath, the air smelt fresh and clean with a lingering scent of trouble underneath.
He checked his watch, it was exactly 10:45 PM, they got there a bit late due to traffic.
They stepped in together, Double-height ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and floating staircases opposite each other.
A single heavily chandelier hung above it all, with an intricate design that made crystal patterns on certain spots on the marble floor.
High-top tables with numerous figures talking and mingling around them.
In the corner sat the orchestra, harps, violins, double basses and so much more— all just to create the gentle rhythmic tone that lingered in the air making the perfect ambiance.
Immediately they were spotted, L.U.X soldiers from other divisions came their way, they were instantly thrust into respectful greetings and casual conversations.
But particularly, they were interested in Levi— apparently word had spread about Kane breaking the division record during his recruitment.
But judging from their conversations it seemed like they weren’t aware of his abilities at all, they insisted on asking him of his state of mind and not how he could punch through a wall.
From that it was clear that, Mr Manhattan hadn’t told them that they had another vampire, or at least whatever the hell Levi was, in the division.
The conversations continued, from the incessant questions, some simple others just absurd, to Selene guiding him to the few potential sponsors who were already there.
He thought the other divisions were annoying, but the sponsors were entitled unfiltered and too direct.
A regular conversation with them was something like this:
"So, I heard you people need my money so keep doing your jobs otherwise you’d go broke and shut down."
Selene blinked profusely, keeping herself in control, "Actually, we need the money so we can effectively curb the scourge of vampires that threaten our existence—"
"Haha. Our existence? Once my moon base is ready I’ll be leaving this dumb of a planet once and for all," he interrupted her.
"Kheum, but even at that, this is our home, this planet’s ours and we’re supposed to retain it forever—"
A disgusting smile crept into his pale cheeks, he cut her off again, "You know I’ve seen you turn around and maybe if you make this night worth my while, I’ll take you with me."
---
But again and again, Selene would control herself and find a nice and appropriate way to exit the conversation.
The only good thing was, the more they irritated her, the more they made her skin crawl, the more she drank.
Levi realised that after a particular conversation where the sponsor moved too close to her and she chugged down three glasses of champagne instantly.
It all made sense to him, she wasn’t a drunk, it was just impossible to keep talking to these people, smile and not punch them without being a little intoxicated.
So his job if he wanted to get free was simple, move her from one disgusting conversation to another and just when she was about to crack he’d pass her a glass of champagne.
He knew that before long her eyes wouldn’t be able to follow his and he could finally begin.
It was perfect.
Until—
The doors of the hall opened, all the heads turned to see them, the heads of the division and the major sponsors finally arrived.
In summary, it was about to get interesting.
