Chapter 266: Councilman Roth’s Suicide

Councilman Roth had just confessed to being the one who had poisoned Zen. At this stage, according to Raymon Vye and Teacher Shim’s plan and their instructions after hypnotizing him, he should have finished himself off. That had been the natural conclusion—one final act of loyalty towards the dark master followed by suicide.

After all, history was witness that the dark witches were all loyal to the Dark Master until death.

But before he could kill himself, Kael’s order to not move had echoed in the large hall. It should have made no difference to Roth! He should have killed himself but he froze on a single word from Kael.

Suddenly, both Teacher Shim and Raymon Vye stiffened. Something was definitely going to go wrong.

The two men exchanged another sharp look, already preparing to interrupt, to push matters forward before Roth could hesitate again. But Kael spoke before either of them could move.

"Councilman Roth," he said calmly, his voice cutting through the tension, "why don’t you recite your lineage for me?"

The words landed strangely in the room. Confusion rippled outward at once. Heads turned. And both Teacher Shim and Councilman Vye froze. What did he mean by that? What possible relevance could lineage have now, at this moment?

Even Councilman Roth, who until then had been staring blankly at the wall ahead, as though already detached from the world, reacted. His gaze shifted, unfocused at first, then sharpening with disbelief as he looked around in confusion.

"What?" he asked hoarsely.

Kael did not look away. "Tell me the names of your ancestors," he said evenly. "Tell me which coven of dark witches you belonged to. After all, you show such deeply rooted loyalty to the Dark Master. That kind of devotion doesn’t come from nowhere."

His eyes narrowed slightly. "It means your parents must have instilled in you everything-the old traditions, the customs, the beliefs-long before you ever made your own choices. You are from the Hunters Pack, if I am not wrong. So, I will need to know everything."

Apart from the small reaction at Kael’s abrupt question, however, Councilman Roth had nothing to say. There seemed to be only one thought going on a loop in his head, "Kill yourself. Kill yourself." The voice was screaming in his head, but something kept him tied in place. He tried to listen to the voice many times, after all, all he had to do was bite his tongue but every part of him seemed to not be listening to his instructions.

Then, Kael turned to Councilman Aldren again and said slowly," Why don’t you take a closer look at him?"

The words seemed to snap something inside the hall and all eyes turned to Councilman Aldren. After all, just now, Kael had made it clear that Aldren was an expert in the dark arts. And now, Prince Kael had just asked him to step forward and check...

Before Aldren could respond, Kael stepped closer to Councilman Roth. His shadow fell over the kneeling man. "Roth, Look up at me."

Nothing happened. Roth’s head remained bowed, his shoulders stiff, his jaw clenched as if he were fighting something unseen.

Kael did not raise his voice. "Look up," he repeated stiffly. "And answer the question."

This time, Roth’s body jerked as his head lifted a bit unnaturally.. His eyes were open, but there was nothing in them. A low murmur spread through the hall.

"What is this?"

"Why is he not responding?"

Teacher Shim’s fingers curled tightly into his sleeve. Raymon Vye’s jaw hardened. Both men watched Roth closely, and neither of them spoke. Dam* it! They had not thought that they would fail at the last moment!

Kael straightened. "Councilman Aldren," he said, without taking his eyes off Roth, "please check."

Aldren hesitated only for a moment before stepping forward. He leaned down, his hand reaching toward Roth’s shoulder. The instant his fingers made contact, his expression changed.

He sucked in a sharp breath. Then he swore under his breath and stepped back as if burned. The hall fell silent.

Aldren stared at his own hand for a moment, then at Roth. His face had gone pale.

"He has been influenced," Aldren said slowly. "By the dark arts. He is under hypnosis. He cannot answer you, Your Highness. He has been marked to kill himself."

The words hit the room like a stone dropped into still water.

Finally, Teacher Shim’s head snapped up and he interrupted, "That is a serious accusation, Aldren."

Aldren turned to him as his voice rose despite himself. "I know exactly what I felt. This man’s will is not his own. There is a command embedded deep inside him.

"Then, can you break the hypnosis?" Kael asked slowly.

He’d already felt the man’s confusion and agony in his mind. All the previous memories had been shuffled until everything was a mess. If it had not been for his command that forcefully stopped his mind from acting, the man would have already killed himself.

Even now, all he had been doing was to try and circumvent the mess in his brain and gain some time so that he could find out the identity of the second person involved in this. One was Raymon Vye. But he was sure he had an accomplice.

Aldren shook his head, "I do not have any way to break the hypnosis. But, your highness, you know this means it could be..."

Kael gave the man an irritated glance. This man was intent on blaming Emira.. He shook his head and said, "It is not Emira. Roth has been hypnotised recently, while Emira was in seclusion over the last few days so there is no way that she could have done it."

He then walked forward and picked up the seemingly inconspicuous toothpick from the table where Councilman Roth had been sitting and sniffed slowly before placing it back on the table... In the next moment, his hands were around Teacher Shim’s neck as he choked the man and asked," Teacher Shim. Why did you do it?"
