Chapter 313: The legitimate princess

"Why do you want to marry me?"

’’To get the throne of Defire.’’

Esme looked at him in disinterest, ’’Apologies for waking you up but your dreams are far-fetched,’’ What had the throne of Defire got to do with her? He was the heir apparent and the throne would eventually belong to him in the future. Why was he dragging her between it?

Jeremiah clicked his tongue as he grabbed a twig from the tree and played with it between his fingers. As he stepped towards her, he broke the twig and threw it on the ground before trampling on it.

’’It’s not me who is dreaming. It’s you who is being naive,’’ he lowered his head to whisper beside her ear.

The hellfire was still burning in the forest but she since she had it under control, it did not spread to the other trees.

In the gleam of fire, Esme could see the hatred in his eyes as he spoke, ’’You have been such a hindrance for my ambitions, Es.’’

He gauged her from head to toe, ’’You don’t have an ounce of power,’’ his voice laced with disdain, ’’You rely on that lover of yours to have your hands on such tricks,’’ his chin pointed to the fire as he spat, ’’Previously, I thought that I won’t be losing out much given that face of yours. It would not be a bad thing to have a taste of you. You were still pretending to be shy in front of me but who could have know you would be going to Aleister’s room behind my back? I treated you sincerely but you... who knows how dirty you are? You are nothing but a promiscuous woman who gets her way by relying on men.’’

Sincerity?

Esme was already very grateful that she was not poisoned by that high grade sincerity of his.

Aleister and her might have started with the pretense of an engagement but later, with both their families present, they were bethrothed, though verbally. So, any engagement after she lost her memories was bound to be void the moment she remembered everything.

And if she had not been so suspicious about Jeremiah’s intentions, she would have told him the truth about Aleister and her instead of keeping him in dark. But with her memories recovered, most of his words and actions were filled with loopholes.

Esme was not offended by his filthy insinuations at all. The more he spoke like that, the further she found him pathetic.

Just how insecure and sad he was for trying to constantly pull her down by demeaning her about irrelevant things?

Whether she slept with Aleister or eloped with him, what had it got to do with Jeremiah?

No matter what, Esme felt like he was finding faults with her on purpose. It was as if he was convincing himself how worse she was than him. But she could not understand the meaning behind this unnecessary comparison when there was no rivalry between them.

’’What you want to say is...?" Esme asked Jeremiah who was circling around her.

When he looked how unaffected she was, his eyes narrowed viciously for a moment before he smirked, ’’That you have no right to be a thorn on my path to the throne.’’

’’Do you have misunderstandings here?" Esme looked at the man who spouting absurd things.

She was beginning to doubt if his long standing hatred and scheming towards her was the result of a misunderstanding.

Did Marcus Norwell plot against her and provoked her in her name? She could not help but doubt. If not because she did not seem to have any enmity with Marcus either, she would have believed her guess.

’’Misunderstanding? Unfortunately no. You are the Princess of Defire, Es,’’ Jeremiah said, stepping back from her as unbridled rage burned in his eyes, ’’The legitimate Princess of the throne that I have been seeking for so long.’’

And his words startled Esme for a moment.

Taking a deep breath, she struggled to calm down, ’’What makes you say that?" 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Although she was slightly stunned, but his words had loopholes. The King did not have a woman by his side. Her mother had disappeared or maybe as people believed, she... was gone forever. As for her, she possessed divine powers.

Claiming that the King was her father, Esme doubted that Jeremiah was doing it because of how the Rezeph treated her.

’’Haven’t you ever wondered why your uncle tried to torture your brother?"

His words made her blood turn cold, taking her back to the memory that she had so desperately seeked to bury in the past. The image of young Adrian bound by chains in a small cage, bruised and bloodied... it still made her heart bleed when she thought about it.

Their own uncle did that to her brother and the betrayal still left a scar on her even though the man was long gone, tortured to death in the streets of Nevesray by her brother.

A sharp glint flashed in her eyes as Esme looked at Jeremiah, ’’You had a hand in it...’’

She never thought the tragedy of the Reis family was interlinked with Jeremiah in any way.

When she asked Adrian, he had told her that their uncle was looking for something that her mother had asked Adrian to protect. Their uncle knew that it was something special. He thought it was a priceless treasure, not knowing that her mother had been talking about her.

Back then, Esme had not given it another thought but now as the mysteries were unveiled, she realized that her mother must have meant for Adrian to keep her hidden and protected, knowing how unique her body constitution and powers were. Unlike the royals, she did not have an ounce of magic in her body and people thought she was born weak.

But in truth, her mother was an adopted daughter of the previous king who used her as a shield for his Kingdom and sons after realizing how capable she was. So, it was impossible for Anastasia or Esme to possess the magic that was only inherited by the royals.
