Chapter 331: Grateful

’Thump’

Rose and Rory dropped to their knees in front of Esme.

’’My Lady, we want to serve you for the rest of our lives.’’

The twins looked up at her with imploring eyes that were filled with nothing but sincerity and gratefulness.

’’Get up,’’ Esme leaned forward to help them up but both of them did not budge from their positions.

’’We were close to giving up on our revenge. If not for you, we would never have been able to avenge our brother who died so unjustly,’’ Their brother was a kind person and he was not even invited to participate in the power race of Defire.

But he had willingly stepped forward to bring glory to their family.

If not for Jeremiah becoming insecure and ending his life, their brother would have been there with them today, breathing and alive.

However, fate was not so kind.

Some things can never be changed.

But what made the twins feel relieved was that at least they had contributed to the doom of the person who had brought that disaster to their family.

’’We want to serve you forever, My Lady,’’ the twins continued in unison.

’’Do you think that’s all you are meant for?"

Esme’s words startled them.

’’The whole day while you were there pretending to be me and getting married to Jeremiah, I had not been idle. I looked into your family. After the death of your brother, the once glorious Finche family had become just another ordinary house in the sea. Your elders refused to let your powers be known to the world to protect you from evil.’’

’’But they never realized how capable you are. Things have changed now. Not only have you avenged yourselves, but you both have grown up and can protect yourselves. Don’t you want to restore the lost glory of your family?" Esme’s words stunned them into silence.

’’My Lady, what... do you mean?" Rory stammered.

Esme stepped forward and held them by their shoulders to help them up.

This time, the twins did not put any struggle as they stood up, looking at Esme, partly in confusion and partly in intrigue.

’’It is time you return to your elders and talk to them about everything that had transpired here. The King is powerful, even invincible...’’ Esme’s gaze slightly shifted to the King who looked at her with sparkling eyes when she mentioned him but she swiftly averted her gaze and looked back at the twins, ’’But a ruler’s true strength rests in his crown. And the crown is represented by the backing of his loyal subjects. The throne of Defire would always seek your loyalty and hand to remain in its glory.’’

Esme’s words made the twins’ eyes shine with a newfound vigor. It was not until this moment did they realized they were not as useless as they had thought themselves to be. Their powers, loyalty, and perseverance had been acknowledged and the strange feeling of warmth seemed to be creeping into their hearts...

’’Your Highness!" The twins submitted in front of Esme again.

Apparently, it suddenly dawned on them that the lady they were talking to was the true heir to their throne. Their Princess.

The sudden change in the way they addressed her did not go unnoticed by Esme.

Her lips twitched as a hint of awkwardness flashed in her eyes.

Aleister pursed his lips to suppress his smile.

Rory was about to say something when something dawned on her.

Feeling flustered, she quickly motioned towards her twin.

It took Rose a moment to understand what her sister was trying to tell her.

"Your Majesty."

While they were singing praises for their princess, they forgot their King. Their God.

They thought that they had hidden their identity and powers well in the castle and nobody knew about them. But the revelation that their King was their God made them discern that he must have seen through them all along.

There were no mysteries of the mers that their creator could not uravel. The mers originated from God Zephyr so every being, every breath, and every power was known to the man who gave them life.

Despite knowing about it, he never divulged their secret.

While Rose and Rory were inwardly panicking about forgetting the man’s existence, Rezeph did not seem to be offended in the least.

In fact, the glint in his eyes shone even brighter when Esme was addressed as ’Your Highness’. He nodded at the twins, ’’Things will go as my daughter pronounced.’’

Rose and Rory pushed themselves to their feet, met each other’s gazes, and smiled as their bodies started shining and submerging into one in front of everyone’s eyes.

’Splash’

The twins became one and came in their mermaid form and before anyone could come to their senses, they jumped into one of the huge ornamental golden cauldrons inside the throne room.

By the time everyone recovered their senses, they could see the midnight blue fins that disappeared inside the water.

As it turned out, another exceptional power that the twins possessed was they could teleport from one water body to another by merging.

The water splashed to the ground, forming small and beautiful crystals as they fell at Esme’s and Rezeph’s feet.

’’Es, I was scared that we would be late and you would have to marry...’’ Luciana approached Esme after the twins’ departure.

Esme blinked in confusion, ’’Why?"

’’To protect the Duke?" Luciana pointed her chin at Duke Maverick who was standing in the corner quietly from the very beginning, observing everything.

Esme blinked again, ’’But Lucy, why would I do that?"

’’What do you mean?"

’’Did you not tell her?" Esme shot Cardan a glare.

’’Tell me what?" Luciana glanced at Cardan before looking back at Esme in confusion.

Cardan pressed a fist on his mouth as he coughed, looking at Aleister for help.

But Aleister simply shrugged.

Esme opened her mouth, ’’Because they are bound by blood, Al can decipher the meaning of Leo’s words despite Leo being a beast. And not only that..."
