Evil dragon has a warm heart-Chapter 101 - 100 Need a Plan
Chapter 101: Chapter 100: Need a Plan
Chapter 101 -100: Need a Plan
“This could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on whether we can solve the harm brought by the rat plague.”
Standing before the dark passage in Grotto Village, Charles spoke what sounded like a truism.
The rat plague had seriously compromised the food production of Grotto Village; masses of mice had consumed too much of the moss and mushrooms, and there was little chance of restoring the normal output of moss and mushroom fields in the near future.
But the sheer number of rats had undoubtedly provided the villagers with an abundance of meat.
In a dark and humid place like Grotto Village, it was not easy to get to eat delicious meat, not even Rangers could guarantee that they’d catch snakes, rats, or various insects every day from the narrow caves.
“Rather than being a paradise for the lowly, the grotto is actually a paradise for snakes, rats, and insects. Many overly narrow dark passages can only be navigated by such small creatures.” Charles muttered quietly beside Russell.
He continued, “A few days ago when I came to investigate Grotto Village, they took me to a certain passage. When we shone a torch inside, we could see skeletal remains stuck in there… Someone tried to catch a snake but got trapped and suffocated; we couldn’t even pull the body out.”
Along the way, they passed several Cold Spring Points, as well as skylights.
Russell saw the dreadful scene of what was left after the mice had gnawed away, where neatly arranged fields of moss and mushrooms were now just bare mud.
The serfs guarding the fields were squatting on the ground, wailing.
Upon seeing Russell and others arrive, they immediately fell to their knees, kowtowing and begging the Lord to save them, to give them a way out.
Many serfs also bore injuries, bitten by the rats.
“After we return, send someone to Fluorescent Castle to order a batch of antidote Magic Elixirs; a rat bite could easily lead to infection with the rat plague.” Russell’s brows were tightly furrowed, “Don’t worry about the money, it will be paid from my Lord account.”
There are many kinds of Magic Elixirs, some of which can cure diseases. Although they can’t bring the dead back to life, they can easily eradicate something as trifling as the rat plague.
“Magic Elixirs are too expensive, Sir. Buying a few and then diluting them with some water for the serfs to drink should do the trick.” Charles was keen on saving money for Russell.
“Don’t be penny-wise and pound-foolish, Charles!” Russell scolded sternly.
Charles immediately responded sheepishly, “Of course, of course, everything should follow your will, Sir. I’ll arrange to purchase the antidote Magic Elixirs right away.”
“I will handle the financial matters, what you need to do is put out this rat plague, make sure it doesn’t cause an outbreak, and properly settle the Grotto Village serfs’ livelihood from here on out.” Russell looked at Charles gravely, “Do these well, and you will be considered a competent Chancellor of Records in my employ.”
Upon hearing this.
Charles was shaken, and he immediately responded in a deep voice, “As you wish, Sir!”
Continuing along the dark passage until reaching Wolf Head Skylight, Russell then saw what a real rat plague looked like.
The majority of Grotto Village’s serfs were crammed near Wolf Head Skylight. The newly established Cave Ranger Squad, Grotto Patrol Team, and the Wolf Head Skylight Cordyceps Guard Squad were all trying their best to extinguish the horde of rats charging toward Wolf Head Skylight.
Because the passages were so narrow, humans were at a huge disadvantage compared to the rats.

So the rats were always able to breach the defenses of the passage and pour into Wolf Head Skylight, where they were then smacked to death, one by one, by Catherine, Halls, Bal, and other Rangers. Dozens of cats also followed behind the Rangers, continuously tearing at these rats.
Those rats, if not the size of cats, were not much smaller.
Some fierce rats even dared to attack the cats, injuring several of them and staining their fur red with blood.
“Jack, James, go help!” Russell charged into Wolf Head Skylight and immediately drew his sword to join the battle.
Eric also nodded to Kevin the Gold and Silver Wolfhound, then joined the fight.
In the blink of an eye, the rat horde was effectively controlled, driven out from the Wolf Head Skylight and pushed back to the other end of the passage.
Particularly, Eric and Kevin exhibited devastating killing power.
Eric could control the sword with battle qi, a long sword danced through the passage, and with each strike, he precisely stabbed a large rat to death.
As for Kevin, it was even simpler. Stationed at the entrance of a small passage, with every rat that came through, he would chomp down, killing it in one bite, then fling it to the side before swiftly biting the next. The rats charged quickly, but he bit even faster.
“How many rats have we killed?” Russell stabbed a rat to death and asked, turning his head.
Catherine, holding long daggers in both hands and without turning her head, replied, “At least a thousand rats, Sir!”
A pile of rat corpses formed a small hill in the center of Wolf Head Skylight.
Charles was also out of breath from killing rats but still had the spare energy to joke, “With so much rat meat, we could definitely get through this grain shortage, haha, as long as we exterminate the rat plague, we could completely exchange rat meat for bread.”
Eric, however, frowned and said, “Sir, something is not right.”
“What?”
“Why are these rats only charging at the Wolf Head Skylight?” Eric raised his concerns.
Katie provided an explanation, “Because all the other moss and mushroom fields have been devastated, only the magical medicine field here is left.”
“Not necessarily so,” Eric said calmly. “I have witnessed two rat plagues, and they have no specific purpose; they chew wherever they go and would not so fearlessly target the magic medicine field at the Wolf Head Skylight, refusing to retreat at all.”
Hearing this, Russell also realized, “Are you saying that behind the rat plague, there’s someone, or a Rat King, controlling it?”
In this world, where transcendent power exists, wild beasts can evolve into fantasy beasts, and naturally, Beast Kings can emerge as well.
Beast Kings are usually fantasy beasts.
For instance, one of Baron Roman’s three contracted fantasy beasts, the King of Ebony-waisted Snakes, used to be the ruler of all blackwaisted serpents in the Wuyao Snake Manor, able to command any blackwaist serpent.
Nowadays, hardly any trace of blackwaist serpents can be found in Wuyao Snake Manor, partly because the agricultural development destroyed their habitats, and partly because when Baron Roman contracted with the King of Ebony-waisted Snakes, he took away a large number of them and built a new “Snake Garden” near Fluorescent Castle.
Hoping that a second fantasy King of Ebony-waisted Snakes might be born from the Snake Garden.
“It’s just a possibility,” Eric replied, his guess was not confident enough to ascertain the actual existence of a Rat King.
Despite being a mere speculation, it still excited Russell.
Jacks and James, the two Knight Attendants, were so excited they couldn’t hide their smiles. If there really was a Rat King, didn’t that mean they too might have the chance to contract with fantasy beasts and become powerful Phantom Beast Knights in the future?
Taking advantage of the interlude as the rat horde was repelled, Russell quickly gathered everyone for a brief meeting.
“Current signs suggest that it’s very likely a Rat King has emerged among the rats. That’s why rats from Echo Water River Cavern and several other caverns around have been drafted here, resulting in this rat plague.”
His eyes blazing, Russell swept a glance over the group, “If so, there’s no doubt about it; the Rat King has its eye on the mushroom field inside the Wolf Head Skylight.”
“It’s highly likely!” Charles’s eyes lit up, “Sir, opportunity, a tremendous opportunity!”
Russell was excited, but his mind remained clear, “Whether it’s an opportunity depends on how we handle this… Ladies and gentlemen, we must first devise a plan to capture the Rat King!”
