Exiled!? Ha! I have An Infinite Space-Chapter 25: AND SUDDENLY, I BECAME A PHYSICIAN 1
I walked past the Fu family without looking at them again. Their eyes followed me, but I didn’t care. Fu Sheng walked beside me quietly, his steps calm, his face unreadable as always.
Ahead, the head guard and his men were settling down under a large tree. They had already made a small fire and were sitting in a circle, their weapons placed within reach. Even while resting, they looked alert.
I walked toward them with a small smile.
"Head Guard," I called gently.
They all looked up at once. Their hands had almost gone to their weapons, but they relaxed when they saw it was me.
I crouched down and held out the two fish. "You’ve all worked hard today. Please take these."
The men looked surprised. One of them scratched his head awkwardly. The head guard stood up and accepted the fish with both hands.
"Madam, this... we can’t just take your food, This is exile, you would hardly have enough to eat." he said.
I smiled. "It’s fine, You all have families as well but here you all are suffering just to get us to our destination This is the least I can do."
The men exchanged looks, then nodded gratefully.
"Thank you, Madam," one of them said with a wide grin.
In my heart, I knew this was important.
Very important.
Those people back there... they were greedy, shameless, and full of tricks. No one knew what kind of ugly ideas they might come up with next.
So I need the head guard and his men, if I can get on their good side, then at least i would have a backer.
I walked back toward our resting place after leaving the head guard and his men, feeling slightly satisfied inside, "Mission accomplished." I whispered to myself.
Fu Sheng followed behind me quietly, not too close and not too far, keeping just enough distance to make me very aware of his presence, yet far enough that I couldn’t feel any warmth from him, and for some reason that small gap between us started to annoy me more than I expected.
I slowed my steps a little, pretending to look around at the trees and the darkening sky, but really, I was trying to see if he would close the distance between us. He didn’t.
His steps slowed too. I stopped walking completely, my back still facing him, and just like I thought, his footsteps also stopped behind me, the dry leaves under his boots going silent at the same time my heart strangely skipped.
My brows slowly pulled together.
I started walking again.
So did he.
I stopped again, this time more suddenly, almost like I was testing him.
Silence followed.
He had stopped again.
I bit the inside of my cheek and muttered softly to myself, "Is he doing this to get back at me for annoying him earlier?"
Feeling annoyed myself, I turned around to face him. I puffed my lips a little without realizing it, folded my arms across my chest, and lightly stomped one foot on the ground like a child who wasn’t getting her way.
"Why are you acting so strange?" I asked, looking straight at him.
He lowered his gaze to me, his eyes dark and steady, the kind of look that could make most people nervous enough to look away first, but I didn’t back down. I lifted my chin slightly instead, refusing to be intimidated.
"What?" I added. "Why are you staring like that?"
For a moment, he said nothing at all. The firelight from a distance flickered faintly across his face, but his expression didn’t change. Then, as if I wasn’t worth the effort of an answer, he simply rolled his eyes lightly, stepped past me, and continued walking ahead toward our resting spot.
I stood there, watching his back, my mouth slightly open in disbelief.
Then I let out a long sigh and shook my head.
"This man is really impossible..." I muttered under my breath before hurrying after him like a child.
By the time Fu Sheng and I returned to our resting place, the air no longer felt calm, because his family had gathered tightly around the wagon, their shadows shaking under the firelight, and the sound of crying pierced straight into my chest.
The two boys were crying loudly, their little bodies trembling, while Madame Fu knelt on the ground, gripping Master Fu’s shoulders as if she was afraid he would collapse completely. Fu Fei sat beside them, her hands shaking badly as she tried to wipe the cold sweat from Master Fu’s pale face with a cloth, but the cloth was already soaked.
Fu Sheng and I exchanged a look.
We understood at once.
Something was very wrong. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
We both rushed forward. Before I could reach them, Fu Tong ran toward me, his eyes red and filled with fear, his breathing uneven like he had been crying for a long time.
"Sister-in-law!" His voice cracked badly. "Father... Father suddenly started bleeding, then he began shouting in pain. We don’t know what to do!"
He grabbed my sleeve tightly, like I was his last hope.
"Please... save Father..."
I didn’t answer. I gently pulled my sleeve from his hand and hurried over, my heart already sinking because a bad guess had formed in my mind.
Fu Sheng had already knelt beside his father, his usually calm face finally showing worry as he called out, "Father."
I stepped closer and looked down.
Just as Fu Tong said.
Master Fu’s injured legs the ones that never fully healed after the beating were now soaked in fresh blood. The cloth wrapped around them was completely wet, dark red spreading through it, and drops of blood were falling onto the ground.
His face was twisted in pain, teeth clenched, jaw shaking, every breath heavy like he was fighting for air.
A cold chill ran through me.
This was not normal pain.
Something inside had torn open again.
