Chapter 62: Chapter

Everyone was being urged forward as the guards began shouting orders.

"Everyone, get moving! Get your breakfast and start walking in a straight line!" one of the guards shouted loudly.

The refugees slowly moved toward the other guards, who were handing out the dry buns for the day.

As usual, Madame Wu and Fu Fei had woken up early to cook something small for the road.

"Done," Fu Tong said, tying the last bundle and placing it carefully on the wagon where Father rested.

I had just finished helping with his bandages, and I felt quite satisfied with the result.

"Father, in no time your leg will heal," I said. "You just have to keep it away from water or anything that could infect it."

The middle-aged man smiled and nodded.

Master Fu had a clean face with little to no beard, unlike his brother. He was actually quite handsome for his age, probably where Fu Sheng and his brother inherited their looks from.

I stood up and dusted my hands. As I walked toward Bai Ming, I began tying my hair into a simple bun. My face was completely bare, without a trace of makeup, something I wasn’t used to in my original body. But I had to admit, Su Long was naturally beautiful.

Bai Ming was already much better. Her fever had gone down quickly after drinking the herbal tea from last night, and Madame Fu had made sure to brew another bowl for her this morning.

"Here," I said, handing her the bowl, my expression calm and unreadable. "You must drink this before we start moving."

She hesitated, giving me a certain innocent look, but I wasn’t buying it.

People were unpredictable. Even if you treated them well, they could still turn around and repay kindness with cruelty.

Originally, she was supposed to be a villain. I wasn’t about to suddenly become friendly with her.

This time, she didn’t argue. With one big gulp, she drank the entire bowl, then wiped her lips.

"T-thank you," she said quietly.

"Hmm." I collected the empty bowl and was about to turn around and leave when suddenly two little figures ran past me.

They rushed toward Bai Ming and jumped into her arms.

They were her children.

Her arms moved instantly, wrapping around the two small bodies that had crashed into her.

"Mother!" the boy cried, his voice trembling as he clung tightly to her robe.

"Mother... we missed you!" the little girl sobbed, burying her face into Bai Ming’s shoulder.

The boy was Fu Qin, her son, while the smaller girl beside him was Fu Lin.

Both children were crying as if they had been holding it in all night.

Bai Ming looked startled at first, but the shock quickly melted into something much softer. Her arms tightened around them, pulling them close.

"I’m here," she said gently, stroking their heads. "I’m fine. Didn’t Mother promise you I would be alright?"

Fu Qin shook his head stubbornly, his small hands gripping her sleeves.

"You were sick," he said between sniffles. "You were so hot last night... we thought you wouldn’t wake up."

Fu Lin nodded quickly, her eyes red from crying.

"We called for you, but you didn’t answer," she murmured.

Bai Ming’s expression softened even more. She lowered her head and kissed Fu Lin’s hair, then rubbed Fu Qin’s back soothingly.

"I’m sorry," she said quietly. "Mother only had a fever. See? I’m fine now."

The two children didn’t let go of her.

Instead, they clung to her even tighter, as if afraid she might disappear again.

Bai Ming didn’t complain. She simply held them, her hands gently patting their backs as she whispered soft words to calm them down.

Watching the scene, I couldn’t help but pause.

I looked at her with slight surprise.

I had never seen Bai Ming like this before.

The woman in the original story had always been described as cold, calculating, and full of resentment. Every action she took was driven by jealousy and hatred.

But the person in front of me now looked nothing like that.

The way she held her children was careful and full of love.

For a moment, she looked like any ordinary mother.

I let out a quiet sigh and looked away.

Even villains could be good parents, I supposed.

Bai Ming’s expression slowly hardened after Fu Jia’s words.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the sleeves of her robe, but she didn’t lower her head this time.

"My children are only telling the truth," she said calmly. "If Su Long hadn’t helped me last night, my fever might have gotten worse."

Aunt Fu snorted loudly.

"So what if she helped you?" she replied sharply. "Are you saying we should thank her for doing the bare minimum?"

Grandma Fu also frowned, clearly annoyed.

"You have always been dramatic," the old woman said coldly. "A small fever and you act like you almost died."

Fu Qin and Fu Lin immediately held onto Bai Ming’s clothes, looking confused by the sudden hostility.

Bai Ming’s eyes darkened.

"It wasn’t a small fever," she replied quietly, but there was steel in her voice now. "But of course... none of you would know. No one came to check."

Aunt Fu’s face twisted in irritation.

"Watch your tone!" she snapped. "Who do you think you are talking to?"

Grandma Fu also glared at her.

"You’ve only been in this family for a few years and you already think you can argue with your elders?"

The air between them grew tense.

Bai Ming didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she slowly looked around the group.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Where is Fu Fong?" she asked.

Just then, someone appeared from the side of the road.

Fu Fong was walking slowly toward them, but he wasn’t alone.

Someone was helping him.

It was Li Manman.

Her arm was wrapped around his, supporting his weight as they walked. She leaned close to him, almost pressing against him, her body angled in a way that made the gesture look far more intimate than necessary.

To anyone watching, it looked less like helping and more like clinging.

The moment Bai Ming saw them, the warmth in her face disappeared.

Her eyes turned cold.

She strode forward before anyone could react.

"Bitch!"

Her voice rang loudly through the camp.

"How dare you, you filthy maid, lay your hands on my husband!"

Before Li Manman could even respond, Bai Ming shoved her away from Fu Fong.

The push wasn’t very strong because Bai Ming was still weak but Li Manman exaggerated the movement.

She stumbled backward and fell dramatically onto the ground, and Immediately, fake tears filled her eyes.

"Young Master..." she cried softly, her voice trembling as she looked up at Fu Fong pitifully.

The scene instantly drew everyone’s attention.

People nearby turned to watch the commotion, including i, Fu Fong and the rest of the family.

"What drama is going on now?" Fu Li said the one question that was going on in everyone’s mind.

Fu Fong looked down at Li Manman on the ground, his expression darkening.

Seeing her crying like that, something in his eyes hardened.

Without hesitation, he stepped forward.

Then,

SLAP!

The sharp sound echoed across the camp.

Bai Ming’s head snapped to the side from the force of the blow.

Fu Fong had slapped her.

Right there.

In front of everyone.

The sharp sound of the slap seemed to freeze the air around them. For a moment, no one spoke.

Bai Ming slowly turned her head back. One hand rose to her cheek where the blow had landed, and a red mark was already beginning to form on her pale skin. Her eyes were filled with shock as she looked at Fu Fong, as if she still couldn’t believe what had just happened.

Fu Qin and Fu Lin immediately rushed toward her.

"Mama!" Fu Lin cried, grabbing her arm.

Fu Qin stood beside his sister, his small hands clenched tightly as he glared at Fu Fong with watery eyes.

Fu Fong’s expression remained dark and cold.

"You’ve gone too far," he said sternly.

Bai Ming stared at him, still holding her cheek.

"I went too far?" she repeated in disbelief.

Fu Fong did not soften. He pointed toward the figure sitting on the ground nearby.

"You pushed her for no reason," he said firmly. "Apologize to her."

Those words made Bai Ming freeze completely.

For a moment she thought she had heard wrong. Then a small, bitter laugh escaped her lips.

"You want me to apologize... to her?" she asked slowly.

Her voice trembled slightly, but her eyes burned with anger.

She lifted her hand and pointed directly at Li Manman.

"To this filthy maid?"

A few gasps spread through the people watching the scene.

Fu Fong’s expression grew even colder.

"Mind your words," he warned.

Meanwhile, Li Manman sat on the ground with her head lowered, her shoulders trembling as if she were crying uncontrollably. But when no one was looking directly at her, a faint smile briefly appeared on her lips.

It was quick and subtle, gone in an instant.

Then she covered her face again and continued pretending to cry.

"Young Master... please don’t argue because of me," she said weakly, her voice soft and pitiful. "It was my fault. I shouldn’t have helped you walk..."

Her words only made her look even more innocent.

Some of the people nearby began whispering among themselves.

"Look at how kind she is..."

"She’s still defending him even after being pushed..."

Bai Ming heard every word clearly.

Her fingers slowly tightened into fists.

Her eyes moved from Li Manman... then back to Fu Fong.

Then she laughed again, but this time the sound was colder and filled with bitterness.

"So this is how it is," she said quietly.

"You slap your own wife in front of everyone... just to defend a maid."
