Han Fuji did not answer immediately.as the fire crackled softly between them.
For a moment, he simply looked at her, then he let out a quiet breath.
"Because I owe you," he said. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
Bai Ming frowned slightly. "Owe me?"
Han Fuji nodded.
"A few months ago," he said slowly, "when I was injured outside the city gate... everyone walked past me."
His eyes lowered slightly as he spoke.
"No one wanted to get involved."
Then he looked at her again.
"But you stopped."
Bai Ming’s eyes widened a little.
"You gave me water," he continued. "You even tore your sleeve to bandage my arm."
"You probably don’t remember."
Bai Ming went silent.
She remembered that day.
There had been a wounded stranger by the road. Many people avoided him because they thought he might bring trouble.
She only helped because she couldn’t ignore someone who was bleeding.
Han Fuji gave a small smile.
"But I remember."
Fu Qin tugged lightly on Bai Ming’s sleeve.
"Mother... is this uncle a good person?" the boy whispered.
Han Fuji looked down at the child and his expression softened slightly.
"I hope so," he said calmly.
Fu Lin peeked from behind Bai Ming’s clothes and looked at him carefully.
Bai Ming looked at Han Fuji again.
Her eyes were still filled with confusion.
"You helped me once," he said simply. "Now I help you."
He then glanced toward the dark area where Fu Fong and his family had gone.
His expression turned serious again.
"You should still be careful," he added quietly. "Fu Fong will not let this go easily."
Bai Ming’s fingers slowly tightened.
She knew that already.
After a moment, she nodded.
"I understand."
Han Fuji looked at the small pot still on the fire.
The roasted potatoes were almost ready.
"You should eat before it gets cold," he said.
Then he turned to leave.
But just as he took a step...
Bai Ming suddenly spoke again.
"Wait."
Han Fuji paused.
She hesitated for a moment before speaking.
"...Thank you," she said again, more sincerely this time.
Han Fuji did not turn around.
But a faint smile appeared on his face before he quietly walked back to where he came from.
Back at the Fu family campsite, Fu Tong had returned to tell them all what had just happened between Bai Ming and Fu Fong.
Fu Li laughed. "Well, I expected Fu Fong to still find a way to trouble Bai Ming, but who would have known that that Song Shi guy would come to her rescue again."
"Yeah, you have a point. If he keeps protecting her like this, it would probably give the impression that he has feelings for her," Fu Fei said as she stirred the pot.
"Ma, what do you think about this?" Fu Teng asked Madame Fu as both of them were mending Master Fu’s leg injury for the night.
Sighing, Madame Fu said calmly, "Whatever is going on between them is neither of our business. We shouldn’t focus on people like them, so they won’t focus on us."
"Aww... Ma, that’s no fun," Fu Li and Fu Tong both sighed.
Fu Fei and Fu Teng laughed slightly and shook their heads.
"When your elder brother and sister-in-law come back, we will all have a family meeting," Master Fu finally said.
"Yeah... speaking of brother and sister-in-law, why are they still not back? What’s holding them?" Fu Li asked as she scratched her head slightly.
"Whatever it may be, brother is strong and a skilled fighter, and sister-in-law is very brave and smart. Don’t worry about them. When they are done, they will join us. The food is ready," Fu Fei said as she got ready to start sharing the food.
Deep inside the forest, away from the noisy campsite, a small river flowed quietly between the trees.
The water moved gently over the stones, making a soft sound.
Su Long stood by the riverbank.
The air was cool, and the night was quiet.
Beside her, Fu Sheng removed his outer robe and placed it neatly on a rock.
Without hesitation, he stepped into the river.
The cold water reached his waist, but his face did not change. It seemed he was already used to cold baths.
Su Long watched him for a moment.
Then she removed her own outer robe.
Only her thin inner clothing remained, covering her chest and lower body.
Her pale collarbone and slender legs were exposed under the moonlight.
The moment Fu Sheng noticed, his ears instantly turned red.
He quickly turned his head slightly to the side.
Su Long noticed.
A mischievous smile appeared on her lips.
She slowly stepped toward the river.
But the moment her feet touched the water—
"Ah! It’s so cold!" she shouted.
The freezing water made her body shake.
Her foot slipped on a smooth stone.
"Ah—!"
She almost fell straight into the river.
But before she could collapse, A strong arm suddenly caught her.
Fu Sheng had already moved forward and grabbed her waist in time.
Her body stopped just above the water.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Su Long blinked.
She realized she was now held firmly in Fu Sheng’s arms.
Su Long froze.
One of Fu Sheng’s arms was wrapped firmly around her waist, holding her steady above the cold water.
Her hand had grabbed his shoulder without thinking.
For a moment, neither of them spoke as the cold river flowed quietly around them.
Su Long slowly looked up.
Fu Sheng’s face was very close to hers now.
His expression was stiff, and the tips of his ears were still red.
"You should be careful," he said finally, his voice low.
Su Long blinked.
Then a small smile slowly appeared on her face.
"But you caught me," she said softly.
Fu Sheng immediately looked away again.
"That was because you almost fell," he replied quickly.
Su Long could not help laughing lightly.
"You are still holding me," she pointed out.
Only then did Fu Sheng realize his arm was still around her waist.
He quickly let go and stepped back a little in the water.
Su Long steadied herself and carefully stood on the stone this time.
The water was still freezing.
She shivered slightly.
"It’s too cold," she complained.
Fu Sheng looked at her.
"Your body is not used to it yet," he said. "If you stay in for a moment, it will feel better."
Su Long looked at him suspiciously.
"Are you sure?"
Fu Sheng nodded calmly.
She hesitated but slowly stepped deeper into the river.
The cold water reached her knees... then her waist.
She shivered again.
Fu Sheng watched her quietly to make sure she would not slip again.
After a moment, Su Long sighed.
"It’s still cold," she muttered.
Fu Sheng almost smiled.
Fu Sheng slowly moved to the other side of the river.
He leaned against a smooth rock and crossed his arms over his chest, trying to calm himself.
The cold water reached his waist, but he did not seem to mind.
Behind him, Su Long watched as she frowned slightly.
She didn’t like being left alone... "Where does he think he’s going to.. leaving me here by myself." She muttered.
So she quickly walked through the water toward him.
The cold made her steps fast and soon enough she reached him.
Fu Sheng looked at her with confusion.
Before he could say anything, Su Long muttered something under her breath.
"I don’t know why you’re suddenly being all distant."
Then she reached out and grabbed his crossed arms.
Using her hands, she forced them apart.
"Su Long—"
But before Fu Sheng could finish speaking, she had already leaned back.
Her back pressed directly against his chest.
She stood in front of him, not moving at all.
Fu Sheng froze instantly.
Su Long seemed completely comfortabl but he was not at all.
She sighed softly.
"It’s warmer like this," she said casually.
Fu Sheng’s heart began beating faster.
He didn’t know where to place his hands.
His arms hovered awkwardly at his sides, afraid to touch her.
Noticing this, Su Long then grabbed hold of his two hands and wrapped them around her.
His hands were wrapped around her bare waist as he could feel her soft skin and how cold it had become from the water.
They both stayed in that position for a while, and soon Su Long was already getting used to the cold. She felt more comfortable now, but the same could not be said for Fu Sheng.
She could suddenly feel his hot breath over her skin, and she became confused about why he wasn’t moving or saying anything, instead just breathing heavily.
Before she could turn around and look him in the eyes, she suddenly felt something poke her from behind, and everything immediately became clear.
Her eyes widened slightly as each second passed. The thing poking her became larger and longer, almost pressing through her wet inner garment below.
"Don’t move."
