Chapter 149: Training for Two

Kaiser pushed open the door to the training hall shortly after midnight. In the center, the raised ring dominated the space; Kara was already there.

She was dressed in an extremely short black sports short and a tight gray tank top that hugged every muscle of her torso and arms. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail. She was warming up intensely, doing sets of jumps in place that made the tips of her breasts tremble under the fabric, smooth shoulder rotations, then a series of punches into the air. Each movement produced a slight rush of air.

The click of the door made her freeze. Her head turned, and her gaze locked onto him. A subtle but distinct wave of pink rose to the surface of her cheekbones.

"You’re late," she said. She crossed her arms, making her biceps stand out. "I was about to leave without you."

Kaiser let the door close gently behind him without answering right away. Silence thickened for a few seconds.

"But you didn’t," he finally replied in a calm tone.

He grabbed the hem of his own t-shirt and pulled it off, letting it fall onto a bench. He stood shirtless for a moment, pale skin, before turning toward his gear. Kara watched him. Her involuntary gaze traveled along the line of his shoulders, the curve of his pecs, then down to his taut abdomen. She abruptly looked away, fixing her eyes on a punching bag in the distance.

"Hurry up and get changed instead of staring at me like an idiot," she muttered through her teeth, biting the inside of her cheek.

A faint smile brushed Kaiser’s lips. He grabbed the black short-sleeved rashguard he had brought, a technical and fitted garment, and slipped it on without haste. Once equipped, he headed toward the ring.

"Come on," he said simply, without raising his voice.

Kara let out a short, annoyed huff. She approached in turn and propelled herself onto the ring. She planted herself facing him, feet firmly planted, fists already clenched at chin height, legs bent in a low and stable guard.

"What are we doing?" she asked.

"No claws today," Kaiser announced. "We’re working on something else."

She narrowed her eyes, a line of suspicion creasing her forehead.

"Seriously? You want me to fight without my natural weapons? That’s completely stupid. It’s like asking you to fight bare-handed when you’re a swordsman."

"It’s not stupid. And I can actually fight bare-handed." He took a step toward her, closing the distance.

"If you only rely on your claws, any opponent who’s even slightly prepared can anticipate them. But if you also master a long weapon, a sword, a spear... you immediately change the rules of the fight. You become unpredictable."

Kara pursed her lips. She hated having her weaknesses pointed out, being told she wasn’t already complete.

"I already know how to fight. I managed on my own for years."

"Then prove it. Grab a training sword. Over there."

She held his gaze for a few seconds, then finally turned on her heel. She walked to the wall where bokkens were lined up. She chose one, spun the handle in her palm to find the balance, then executed a quick moulinet that whistled through the air. She returned to him, weapon held firmly at her side.

"You’re really going to let me attack you with this?" she asked, a thin, provocative smile curling the corner of her mouth.

"Yes. And I’m going to show you how to parry properly, how to manage distance, and how to exploit an opening without throwing yourself in headfirst."

Kaiser went to the rack in turn and selected a similar bokken. He returned and took his stance, right foot back, knee bent, the tip of the wooden weapon pointed at her eyes. Kara imitated him, adopting a more aggressive posture, weight shifted forward.

She attacked first.

A clean, rapid vertical downward strike, cleaving the air straight toward his skull. Kaiser raised his bokken horizontally above his head.

The clash of the two woods echoed in the empty space. Without waiting, she followed with a lateral reverse slash aimed at his ribs. He lowered his weapon and blocked; the impact was duller. She stepped back, feinted with her upper body to the left, and delivered her real strike, a diagonal toward his right shoulder.

Kaiser parried without apparent effort, his foot movement minimal, his body pivoting just enough to follow and absorb the force of the attack.

"You hit too hard right from the start," he commented, his neutral voice contrasting with their physical confrontation. "It tires your arms unnecessarily, and above all, it unbalances you slightly forward every time. It telegraphs your intentions."

"Shut up and fight!" she retorted, frustration coloring her voice.

She accelerated the pace, forcing the tempo. She delivered a strike to the right side, which Kaiser blocked while stepping back. Then she attempted a wide horizontal cut, engaging the full rotation of her hips.

He parried again, but this time, instead of staying at distance, he slid to the side at the moment of impact and advanced abruptly.

Their bokkens crossed and locked against each other at mid-length, creating a pressure point right between them. Their arms trembled slightly under the effort.

Their bodies were suddenly very close. Their faces ended up only a few centimeters apart.

"You want to train or use this as an excuse to kiss me~?" Kaiser teased.

Kara was breathing fast. Beads of sweat ran down her temples.

Her warm breath, expelled between her parted lips, touched the skin of his neck and chin.

"And you’re pressing yourself on purpose," she said, her voice slightly shaky.

He smiled gently, never breaking eye contact.

"Yes, yes..."

Kara felt heat rush to her cheeks and blushed visibly. "Idiot..."

Yet she didn’t move. Their chests almost touched, separated only by a few centimeters. Kaiser eased the pressure on the weapons slightly.

With a motion, he twisted his wrist, freeing his bokken and gently bringing it against Kara’s throat, without pressing, the wood barely brushing her skin.

"...finish the fight," he finished.

She swallowed, her gaze flickering between his eyes and the blade resting against her neck.

Kara slowly raised her hand and closed her fingers around his wrist. Not to push away, but to hold it in place.

"You’re really unbearable," she murmured, without anger.

"I know..."

’And the last one who told me that ended up in my bed.’ Kaiser thought of Adriana, the little commoner who had suddenly fallen in love with him.

He lowered his weapon. She did the same. Their fingers brushed as they set the bokkens down on the floor.

Kara opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Instead, she placed both hands flat on his chest, as if to push him away... and stayed still.

Kaiser slid a hand behind her nape. His fingers brushed her warm, sweat-damp skin. He gently pulled her toward him, without haste.

Kara closed her eyes an instant before their lips met. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

The kiss began slowly. Then she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer, surrendering to the moment. Kaiser responded by encircling her waist, pressing her against him. She arched slightly, a small muffled sigh escaping against his mouth.

Kara rested her forehead against his, eyes still closed.

They stayed entwined for a long moment, in the middle of the ring, bathed in silence. The quiet was pleasant, disturbed only by the slow return to calm of their breathing.

Kara finally stepped back, cheeks still flushed.

"Um... I think we’re done for today..." she announced, trying to regain her composure.

"You got what you wanted and now you’re ending the training? Am I your whore, Kara?" Kaiser teased.

Her face turned bright red. "Just shut up!"

Kara went to sit on the edge of the ring, legs dangling in the void. Kaiser came and settled beside her, shoulder to shoulder.

She shrugged, but when she turned her gaze toward him, it was soft.

"For a first time, it was... not that bad."

"You’re annoying..."

He slipped an arm around her shoulders. She let herself lean against him without protesting, her head naturally finding the crook of his shoulder.

They stayed like that for a long while, in the empty and silent hall, just the two of them.
